brownie Posted April 8, 2009 Report Posted April 8, 2009 French saxophonist Jean-Claude Fohrenbach, one of the best French musician that emerged after World War Two, died on March 30. He was 84. The innovative saxophonist played with Kenny Clarke, Roy Eldridge and others. He was a close friend of Boris Vian. A double CD of some of his recordings was published recently as part of the Jazz in Paris collection. Quote
king ubu Posted April 8, 2009 Report Posted April 8, 2009 Sad news - but for once it's cool that he lived to see that reissue, usually it's the other way 'round (as with Universal's Mangelsdorff reissues from last year... why did they wait so long?) Quote
Big Beat Steve Posted April 8, 2009 Report Posted April 8, 2009 Am not all that familiar with his work beyond the above 2-CD set (a GREAT one!) and some sideman appearances on other leaders' records but judging by his regular presence in 50s issues of JAZZ HOT he must have been a major figure of French jazz in those days. R.I.P. - think I'll spin that CD once more tonight. Quote
Late Posted April 8, 2009 Report Posted April 8, 2009 ... the above 2-CD set (a GREAT one!) ... Agreed. Anyone who's liked the Jazz in Paris sets should pick this one up. And it is indeed nice that he lived to see the reissue of that set. Quote
