bakeostrin Posted April 11, 2009 Report Posted April 11, 2009 Worth reading-- http://www.nytimes.com/2009/04/07/arts/mus...?ref=obituaries Thanks; the last couple lines are compelling: On the day before he died, he was in a San Diego recording studio as a musician for hire. “He knew it was his last shot,” his wife said. “The doctors told him if he went he would die. And he went.” Quote

Late Posted April 13, 2009 Report Posted April 13, 2009 I met Bud Shank in 1988. He was the featured guest soloist for Oregon's all-state high school jazz band that year. Unfortunately, at that time, I wasn't aware of his music. He told us some stories about his Kenton days, and that he was kind of pissed (his word) that he initially became known for the flute instead of the saxophone. I can't remember the year he put the flute down, but he said that was a liberating move. To this day, the soundtrack to Slippery When Wet is one of my favorite albums. His short-lived quartet with Gary Peacock is also one of my favorite bands. Quote
