AllenLowe Posted March 31, 2009 Report Posted March 31, 2009 (edited) I am trying to find a recorded blues performance by Martial Solal for the years 1952-1958; preferably with his trio. I have one volume of the Vogues, but there is no blues - does anyone know of such? thanks - Edited March 31, 2009 by AllenLowe Quote

gnhrtg Posted April 1, 2009 Report Posted April 1, 2009 Allen, I have the 4 volumes of the Vogue recordings and the Bechet-Solal Quartet on Vogue. Will any blues do? Or perhaps you'd prefer to look through the track lists and tell me which one(s) you'd like? And what would you need me to do? Send me a pm and I'll try to help. Quote
brownie Posted April 1, 2009 Report Posted April 1, 2009 Martial Solal has rarely dabbled with the blues. The closest he seems to have gone on that road would be on the 1954 trio side 'Farniente' which is available on vol. 1 of The Complete Vogue Recordings series. Quote
Niko Posted April 1, 2009 Report Posted April 1, 2009 on the lucky thompson jazz in paris disc "With Dave Pochonet All-Stars" there's Date: April 16, 1956 Location: Paris, France Label: Club Francais du Disque (Fr.) Gérard 'Dave' Pochonet, Lucky Thompson (ldr), Charles Verstraete (tb), Lucky Thompson (ts), Michel de Villers (bar), Jean-Pierre Sasson (g), Martial Solal (p), Benoit Quersin (b), Gérard 'Dave' Pochonet (d) a. Fascinating Blues - 4:03 (Jean-Pierre Sasson) which does not contain a solo by solal however (but a 12 bar intro) just listened to most of this album again, great one! michel de villers and jean-pierre sasson have some fine solos too; on the other session there's a blues with a two chorus piano solo (one for the boys and us) but it's by henri renaud... king ubu Posted April 1, 2009 Report Posted April 1, 2009 What about the tune "Bluesine"? I'm away from my discs and not googling around, but maybe that's a blues? Or did he ever cover some Parker blues tunes? Or on those MPS trio albums, maybe there's something there? (Sent you a PM, Allen!) Quote
AllenLowe Posted April 1, 2009 Author Report Posted April 1, 2009 the cutoff date is really 1958 - and I know that he is not really a "blues" player per se, but that's the idea, to show how players like Solal approach the form - will have to locate Farniente and see how close it comes - thanks, everyone - Quote
AllenLowe Posted April 1, 2009 Author Report Posted April 1, 2009 (edited) not a problem, I appreciate any help I can get - this blues reissue project is now, finally, 36 CDs and I'm going a bit nuts - I still have to annotate the performances, and than write a book (!) and than finally film the documentary, and compose enough music for a soundtrack/CD - I have promised the wife that this is my final big project before I ride off into the sunset or go to that big boxed set in the sky - Edited April 1, 2009 by AllenLowe Quote
brownie Posted April 1, 2009 Report Posted April 1, 2009 Blues Martial This one's not a trio track but part of a 1956 session with 'Kentonians'' Vinnie Tano, Carl Fontana, Don Rendell, Curtis Counce and Mel Lewis. It's on vol. 3 of the Complete Vogue Recordings series. Quote
brownie Posted April 1, 2009 Report Posted April 1, 2009 Mais oui. It's a 7m42s track with Solal featured in a long solo. Also Solal plays great comping behind the Kentonians' solos. Quote
AllenLowe Posted April 1, 2009 Author Report Posted April 1, 2009 sounds perfect - will find it - Quote
king ubu Posted April 2, 2009 Report Posted April 2, 2009 The final tune of Complete Vogue Recordings Vol. 2, "Blues for Albert" is also a blues, obviously, it's only about two minutes and a piano solo. Vol. 4 has two further blues: "Buyer's Blues" as it's spelled on amazon.fr (I think it's "Byers' Blues", composed by Billy Byers) from the session with Allen Eager, and "Blouse Bleu" (blue blouse, a wordgame obviously), a short big band track featuring Solal in a few twelve bar solos between arranged parts by the band.
