oneofanotherkind Posted March 29, 2009 Report Posted March 29, 2009 (edited) Seems there is absolutely nothing under Farrell's name available on any modern media. Does this mean Joe's out of favor with the recording industry gods ? Yes , ok , specifically I was looking for Is there anything wrong with that ? Edited March 29, 2009 by oneofanotherkind Quote
BillF Posted March 29, 2009 Report Posted March 29, 2009 Interesting! There was a time when you heard Joe Farrell's name a lot - particularly when he was Elvin Jones's sideman. But, like you, I hear nothing about him nowadays. A quick search tells me that he died tragically at the age of 49 in 1986 from bone cancer. Amazon.uk is offering three used copies of Vim 'n Vigor, one at reasonable price, two super-inflated! Quote
oneofanotherkind Posted March 29, 2009 Author Report Posted March 29, 2009 (edited) Yo , check it ! This one's still in print : Hub plays rather on well on this if memory serves me ... Edited March 29, 2009 by oneofanotherkind Quote
Dave James Posted March 29, 2009 Report Posted March 29, 2009 (edited) Well for one thing, Farrell passed away in 1986, so he's recording very little new music these days. Add to this the fact that he checked out at only 49 years of age, so you have to figure he lost 20 years or more of potential recording activity as a result of his early death. With regard to Vim and Vigor and Sonic Text, and depending on how beholden you are to owning the physical CD, both are available on eMusic. BTW, Skateboard Park is another recording worth checking out. Good luck with your search. Up over and out. Edited March 29, 2009 by Dave James Quote
Teasing the Korean Posted March 29, 2009 Report Posted March 29, 2009 (edited) Could we please change the name of this thread to "Eyeball in Canned Peach Corner?" Edited March 29, 2009 by Teasing the Korean Quote
oneofanotherkind Posted March 29, 2009 Author Report Posted March 29, 2009 It's very clear ( to me , at least ) that the lower peaches were carefully positioned so as to resemble female breasts. And as for the eye , the implications are truly scary ... Killer Joe : Quote
JSngry Posted March 29, 2009 Report Posted March 29, 2009 I think that Farrell himself had a glass eye, that's why it turned up a few times on the CTI covers. Or so I've been told. Quote
Lazaro Vega Posted March 29, 2009 Report Posted March 29, 2009 I thought he died of aids. Corea's "Gotta Match?" is dedicated to him. Aren't there a few of his solos with the Thad Jones/Mel Lewis band, too? Quote
AndrewHill Posted March 30, 2009 Report Posted March 30, 2009 I really got hip to Joe on Hill's Passing Ships-where he comes out with both barrels blasting. Since then, I've aquired Moon Germs, which is quite good, and Elvin Jones' Puttin' It Together. Would like to hear some more CTI material, but so little of it has seemingly seen cd reissue, especially with Moon Germs slipping back out of print; what a shame. Quote
JSngry Posted March 30, 2009 Report Posted March 30, 2009 When it comes to CTI, the internets is your friend. Quote
oneofanotherkind Posted March 30, 2009 Author Report Posted March 30, 2009 (edited) Farrell with Mingus Dynasty : Remarkable similarity to Got The Spirit ! Anyone know how MD came to have two bass at that time ? Edited March 30, 2009 by oneofanotherkind Quote
Hot Ptah Posted March 30, 2009 Report Posted March 30, 2009 I saw Joe Farrell with Mingus Dynasty in 1979, in a group with Randy Brecker, Jimmy Knepper, John Handy, Don Pullen, Charlie Haden and Dannie Richmond. His tenor sax solos were excellent throughout the evening, very energetic and compelling. Quote

His tenor sax solos were excellent throughout the evening, very energetic and compelling. He's on a couple of the Mingus Dynasty recordings, Chair in the Sky and Live at Montreux. He's also on the Mingus album, Pre-Bird. Quote
BFrank Posted March 30, 2009 Report Posted March 30, 2009 Joe Farrell with Elvin Jones & Jimmy Garrison Outstanding! Quote
Niko Posted March 30, 2009 Report Posted March 30, 2009 another hill cd with excellent (at least, i was very surprised) playing from farrell is dance with death played sonic text on deezer a few times and it did grow on me, some parts i really liked in the end, others i still didn't quite get... paul secor Posted March 30, 2009 Report Posted March 30, 2009 Don't think that Jaki Byard Quartet: Live! (Prestige) has been mentioned. Joe Farrell does some wailing on that one. Quote
Hot Ptah Posted March 30, 2009 Report Posted March 30, 2009 While this may not be a universally shared opinion, I think that Farrell's playing is one of the best things about the popular Chick Corea albums, "Return to Forever" and "Light as a Feather." Quote

Agreed. And a big reason why these are my favorite RTF albums. Quote
JohnT Posted March 30, 2009 Report Posted March 30, 2009 One of my favorite recordings of his is: Skate Board Park (1979) Xanadu 174 (with Chick Corea, Bob Magnusson, Larance Marable) Quote

Right! Good call. Dance with Death is an excellent date. I don't think Farrell here blew me away like he did on Passing Ships, but it is an overall excellent date nonetheless. Quote

His tenor sax solos were excellent throughout the evening, very energetic and compelling. Perhaps you were at the same Carnegie Hall concert that I attended that year. That was truly a fantastic concert, everyone was on fire. On another note, I highly recommend Farrell's work on an early Chick session, TONES FOR JONES BONES (Vortex LP). The version of "Litha" on that session is smoking! I do have the VIM 'N VIGOR session, good but I don't think it's essential. Quote
