JSngry Posted March 28, 2009 Report Posted March 28, 2009 http://www.dustygroove.com/item.php?id=skv...p;ref=index.php CD (Item 484933) Marge (France), 1981 -- Condition: New Copy A later recording from Philly Joe Jones -- but a great one too -- a rare set recorded in France, with a super-hip lineup that really makes things cook! The group's got some really incredible horn work -- both Charles Davis and Hal Singer on tenor, creating a double-edged sound that's brilliant on the leads -- plus Roger Guerin on trumpet, Glenn Ferris on trombone, and Hirshel McGinnis on alto -- a horn section that Jones arranges with a very unique groove -- one that hearkens back to some older hardbop ensemble work, but which has a decidedly modern feel. The group's completed by Gene Adler on piano and Wilbur Little on bass -- and titles include "Two Bass Hit", "Trailway Express", "Dedicated To Tadd", "Killer Joe", and "Our Delight" -- plus a hip take on "Hi Fly" that has all horns dropping out except Charles Davis, who blows beautifully over the 13 minute tune. © 1996-2009, Dusty Groove America, Inc. That's a fascinating lineup, to say the least, but I could also see this one going either way. The Marge sessions I've heard to date haven't exactly stressed preparation and/or careful production supervision, so it could be really raggedy. Quite possibly is, is my hunch. But in a good way or in a bad way? You know, good-bad. But not evil! Quote
marcello Posted March 28, 2009 Report Posted March 28, 2009 No, but the tunes look like a typical PJJ set of the day. Quote
brownie Posted March 30, 2009 Report Posted March 30, 2009 Jim, the only thing wrong with the album is that it took so long to appear on CD (no doubt due to Marge's financial problems). It's a spirited and disciplined session very much in the spirit of the Dameronia recordings. 'Filet de Sole' should be on your menu! Bon appétit! Quote
Niko Posted March 30, 2009 Report Posted March 30, 2009 seems futura/marge/impro continue reissuing stuff (one that looks really good is the pepper adams/georges arvanitas album for instance!) http://futuramarge.free.fr/ Quote
Kevin Bresnahan Posted March 30, 2009 Report Posted March 30, 2009 Deep used to go on about this date but I was never able to find it. He gave me the impression that it was well worth finding. Kevin Quote
jazzbo Posted March 30, 2009 Report Posted March 30, 2009 It's been on cd before. 'Salright. I love Philly Joe. I'm not that crazy about any of his dates as a leader. Quote
aparxa Posted March 30, 2009 Report Posted March 30, 2009 Available at a reasonable price on priceMinister (8 to 15 euros), first in, first out. Quote

clifford_thornton Posted March 31, 2009 Report Posted March 31, 2009 I don't think I've seen the vinyl before, either, though some of those Marge titles aren't all that easy to find. For PJJ as a leader, the one I come back to often is Trailways Express, on Polydor. Not that it's the "best" but I like it a lot. Quote
