GA Russell Posted March 25, 2009 Report Posted March 25, 2009 I have the opportunity to get two cd's from ECM's entire catalogue of 1200 titles. I know that many, perhaps most, of you are more familiar with the ECM catalogue than I am, and I would appreciate your suggestions. So let's narrow it down. I would prefer: a) songs that Jon Hendricks could write lyrics to if he wanted to. b) a band with a full complement of musicians, including bass and drums. I have enough Keith Jarrett to last me the next three or four years. Twenty years ago I got a couple of Gary Burton's that I like a great deal. Maybe a Chick Corea. Maybe a Pat Metheny. Maybe Carla Bley. Any ideas? Quote

Well, those criteria & "favorite ECM" don't necessarily go together for me, but nevertheless, I'd put Carla Bley's Night-Glo in there, keeping in mind that Hendricks wrote lyrics to some Jobim tunes before Gene Lees got the call. Aggie87 Posted March 25, 2009 Report Posted March 25, 2009 (edited) I'm pretty sure we've done this exercise more than once before, but it's difficult to search for ECM in thread titles here. Here's Your 10 (or 5, or 3) favorite ECM albums. More ECM threads listed in that one: Favourite ECM-ECM New Series Album ECM to begin reissues ECM reissue thoughts Edited March 25, 2009 by Aggie87 Quote
mjzee Posted March 25, 2009 Report Posted March 25, 2009 I was just listening to Gary Burton's "Passengers," with Pat Metheny and Eberhard Weber. A long-time favorite. Quote
Jazzmoose Posted March 25, 2009 Report Posted March 25, 2009 As Falls Wichita So Falls Wichita Falls by Metheny is the LP that launched me on the jazz journey, so I definitely have a weak spot for that one. Don't know if I'd recommend it for others, though, as my weak spot doesn't do a thing for anyone else. Quote
JohnS Posted March 25, 2009 Report Posted March 25, 2009 Jack Dejohnette; Special Edition. The first one with Arthur Blythe and David Murray. Old and New Dreams Quote
clifford_thornton Posted March 25, 2009 Report Posted March 25, 2009 Mine are "out" leaning early ones so there you go. Unless Alfred Harth had a Jon Hendricks fascination that I don't know about... Quote
danasgoodstuff Posted March 25, 2009 Report Posted March 25, 2009 Mine: Art Ensemble - Nice Guys ("Drea MING of the MAS ters" is certainly singable...) Dave Holland - Conference of the Birds (not sure 'bout singable, but this is what he shoulda won all those awards for) neither is particularly typical ECM, Bright Size Life or DeJ Live with Lester B & John A would be closer that chimera Quote
