My connection has been awful for several weeks now. I'm writing this in the library. It used to be bad for a bit, then tolerable for a bit, but I'm not expecting any improvement, now. The phone company says it's the way the connection has been set up and the guys who set it up say that it's the phone company's fault. What can you do?

Next March, the roll-out of digital TV reaches this area and we'll buy new TVs, a new computer (mine will be about 7 years old by then) and change our phone supplier to a firm that will bundle TV, phone and broadband into one package. I'm hoping things will be better then.

But until then, I shan't be making appearances, I'm afraid.

See you all next year.

Yes I've been wondering where you've been lately too.

Hope you will enjoy your faster web access once it's there. A couple of weeks ago I finally installed a new computer (the old one is close to 9 years old but is still doing fine for what it is supposed to do), changed over to a faster DSL (at last!) flat rate phone and internet access at the same time (wouldn't have made much sense upgrading the old one before that) and finally had an in-house "intranet" with up to 4 internet access points installed. So I won't have to rely on my office computer anymore for really FAST access to this and other sites.

Hope you'll be able to experience the same difference, so hang on until then ...

Sorry to hear of your connection woes, hope things improve asap.

I'm one of the lucky ones, enjoying 100mbps fibre optic connection, courtesy of NTT (Nippon Telegraph & Telephone).

The African music thread is not the same without you, no offense to those still taking part in it, truly appreciate the way you do business on this board and your open mindness about music in general, hope you win the lottery and get yourself new gear ASAP.

Your local library needs your support!

But seriously, why not simply move to a nice big city that has trouble-free Internet access? You can always move back a year later. Seems like a small price to pay for the opportunity to keep posting!

Drop in when you can from the library or wherever. We'll be watching for you!

Too bad you can't find some whiz kid to check out the way it was set up, just in case. I was an electronics technician in a former life, and I can vouch for the fact that they're just as prone to run into an occasional attack of the stupids as anyone else. Or maybe it was just me...

It might be to soon to blame the phone company. I would get someone to check your wireless drivers, wireless router, the PC connection setup and the WEP security setup. Try to restart the router and have it off for 5 minutes. A bad driver will typically lead to a irregular and slow connection that drops out.

Also check if there could be a virus or malware that might block your connection. If you know some people who are good at Linux they would be able to find the cause of the problem in short time. Then upgrade to Linux. :)

If the phone company had the problem they should be able to see at their side, because they can log into your wireless router if they owns it. They can also check the line. Alternatively they should come home to you to test it, and if it does not work properly they should fix it or give you a reduction in the price.
