Д.Д.
Just received the information from Hiroshi Tanno in Japan that Pharoah Sanders - "Live at the East" (Impulse!) is no longer available. Apparently, this is one of Sanders' best, so it would probably make sense to try to find it asap. AMG review Edited June 11, 2004 by Д.Д. John B
I just listened to this disc again today Lee Konitz / Don Friedman / Attila Zoller - Thingin Pleasant enough...I enjoyed listening to it, but nothing really stuck with me. It could have been the multiple distractions in the office today. I'll have to give it another shot. Is anyone else here familiar with this disc and have any thoughts? John B
I think I'm going to sell my copy of Lacy's Clichés; I don't like Irène Aëbi's contributions. I don't believe I have ever heard her. What does she play / contribute? Cello, violin and (the main reason for my dislike of the CD) voice. I'm really not a fan of vocals in jazz, so this concerns me. I'll probably still pick up this disc and give it a chance.
John B
getting back to Aphex Twin-ish music for a minute, I would also recommend this disc: Autechre - Draft 7.30 Not as good as Tri Repetae, but still very solid. Great cover art, imo.

king ubu
Let me mention this one again: Xavier Garcia - Gianni Gebbia - Nils Wogram pronto! Gianni Gebbia: Alto and Soprano Saxophones Nils Wogram: Trombone Xavier Garcia: Sampler Cover Art: Gianni Gebia Cover Graphic: Dominik Süess Liner Notes: Bert Noglik Recorded February 2001 at Miamo Studio, Palermo, Italy, by Natale Lopes. Published 2002 by Intakt Records Intakt CD 076 Gianni Gebbia, Xavier Garcia und Nils Wogram: Three who met on the outermost, southernmost tip of Europe have shaped their music into an exciting event, a challenge and a feast for the senses. Gianni Gebbia is at home at the place everything happened, in Sicily's capitol Palermo, and has revitalized a scene of improvised music there. He has made a name for himself by playing with many of the internationally-known outstanding musicians of this genre, has played solo concerts, and is active as a promoter. Nils Wogram, who has long arrived in the scene and still can be considered young, has distinguished him-self with his own ensembles and compositions, and feels connected in many ways to the musical culture of Cologne, Germany. And Xavier Garcia comes from a stronghold of avant-garde music, inspired by jazz, in France: from the circle of musical association, ARFI, settled in Lyon: Association à la Recherche d'un Folklore Imaginaire. He plays with ARFI groups, composes and produces works of electronic music and has thereby created his own individual style in his dealing with live electronics. In this trio, musical explosiveness results from the continually changing different mixtures of known and completely new sounds. The associations reach from songs, hymns and chorales to Bebop and Cool Jazz, from Babylonian confusion of voices to soundtracks for imaginary films, from Mediterranean melodies to Albert Ayler, from string ensembles to Indian sitar sounds, from the history of the trombone in Jazz to electronic music. In the course of the pieces, in varying shapes, it becomes clearer and clearer what can be heard and what needs no further reference to anything else: the identity of a trio. Bert Noglik, Liner Notes Source: http://www.intaktrec.ch/ge-a.htm I think it's pretty fascinating music. Quiet, almost a bit meditative at points. The mix of electronics with Gebbia and Wogram works quite organically. Also, Gebbia and Wogram are two fascinating instrumentalists. It's not one to shine from the start, but one that has to grow, I think. I shall definitively listen to it again. (I got it from the libary, by the way). ubu And let me add: It's a great CD, in my opinion! I like the blend of Wogram and Gebbia a lot, and Garcia adds a lot. It's not the horns that fly and Garcia who provides background - things flow in and out of focus constantly, the horns do have solos, also long ones, but everything is organically growing out of each other. Wogram at times sounds like a didgeridoo, Gebbia does some multiphonics, too. And they're not afraid of the melody. ubu Edited June 11, 2004 by king ubu

Can't point you to the thread right now, but reactions were positive to very positive and beyond. I guess this is not the music to jump out and catch you at the troath, none of the tunes has stuck with me either. The mood is brilliant though and so is the playing. This music is not made to stick but by its overall character and that's just fine and dandy.
Д.Д.
In case anybody's interested, there is a new Zappa release on ZFT called Joe's Corsage: http://zappa.com/spifnificent.html Mostly pre-'66 Mothers demos and concert recordings. I doubt there is anything particularly revelatory there, but it's a new Zappa release, so I'll go for it of course.
John B
Going back to the bass player discussion for a minute...I saw Alex Blake in concert with Randy Weston two days ago and was extremely impressed. He was on fire that night and really made me sit up and take notice. I bought his live album recorded at the Knitting Factory and was very impressed on first listen. Great album, unless you hate bass solos. Edited June 14, 2004 by John B

Anyone here ever hear of this disc? Sucks. Yeah, sucks big time! And someone better send me some money so that I can buy that "Thingin'" soon! Got the other Zentralquartet disc on Intakt, as well as Hal Russel's first Atavistic Unheard disc, both for 5 bucks, new, in that only one store dedicated purely to jazz on the last day it was opened (had to made a last visit there, and couldn't resist...) Also, on the same day (Saturday), interviewed Stephan Wittwer. A very interesting person he is! ubu

John B
I'm giving this one another listen today. Not an earthshaking album, but very, very nice. I definitely recommend this one to all Funny Rat friends. (now if my package from Verge would just hurry up and arrive so I can continue my Ayler listening marathon...) OK, I checked, that's him. I am getting this CD. Edited June 16, 2004 by Д.Д.

Then I should get some more of his stuff. OK, I checked, that's him. I am getting this CD. I have never heard The Flam. I guess I need to add it to my next purchase order. If you ever get a chance to see Alex Blake perform live do whatever you can to be there. The records I have heard with him on them are great, but they do not come close to capturing the energy and excitement he generates live. My Ayler order arrived last night, so, if I have time to start listening to these discs today, reviews will be forthcoming.

John B
The review on AMG of this disc is awful, imo. The disc itself is really solid. Nothing essential, but some nice playing from Murray, Doyle and even Nordstrom, although the liner notes downplay his abilities at this performance. edit - I would, however, caution those of you who can't stand vocalizations on your jazz albums. Arthur Doyle gets going with some howling and yodeling that is definitely not for all tastes. Edited June 16, 2004 by John B

As I remember, it was quite good, if a bit primitive.
John B
Anders Gahnold Trio - Flowers for Johnny (Ayler) I'm just finishing disc one of this set and am loving this album so far. The sound is fantastic and Johnny Dyani is in top form here. Gahnold is playing well, although I prefer his work on ...and William Danced. Ayler is quickly becoming one of my "buy all releases labels." I have yet to hear a bad disc from them.

Д.Д.
ubu, I received the CD-Rs - thanks a lot! I had a chance to listen to only two tracks for the Brötzman-Gustafsson-Vandermark thing, and it is excellent. It was nice to hear such an introspective playing on the first track, and Gustaffson just burns on baritone on the second. Looking forward to listening to all of the CDs. I'll report here. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Regarding Lowe's "The Flam" - come on guys, this is a classic, and if you don't have it, put it immidiately on the very top of THE LIST, particularly given Black Saint's troubled distribution sitiation.
