Time for me soon to spin the rat-dried dog again, a distant relative of the funny rat.

Who here has that one?

Great disc! Any time I get a chance to hear Hamid Drake stretch out I am happy. I've been meaning to give that one and Emancipation Proclamation with Joe McPhee a listen sometime soon.

Jim Dye, and everybody else, of course, is highly welcome to jump into the rat at any time of any day.

Your generosity is outstanding!

:g

Seriously now: I would welcome more participation in our discussion! No need to follow the whole thing, just jump in right here if you feel like!

I like this one a lot:

Irène Schweizer with Pierre Favre - Ulrichsberg - Intakt

:tup

(Couldn't find a pic)

Is this the one ubu was raving about way back when (up?)? I need to check some Schweizer stuff.

Nope, it was a different one, in this post.

One of only three dates Denis Charles led before he passed away. A fantastic live set recorded in 1991, this has been OOP but was recently reissued by Eremite. Highly recommended! :tup

Hi folks,

Just a note to let you know that I'll be taking a break from posting for a time. I've asked Jim to temporarily deactivate my membership (that is, put me in "validating" mode). Those that have to reach me have my e-mail address.

Not a big deal.

See you later.

Yeah, I was raving about "Chicago Piano Solo".

"Ulrichsberg" had a lot of very positive press here. Schweizer did a whole series of duos with drummers for Intakt (Louis Moholo, Günter Sommer, Andrew Cyrille, Pierre Favre, Han Bennink - on Intakt 006-010) that all seem to be good at least (if the Penguin is to be believed at this, and I would tend to believe).

With Pierre Favre, who, like her, is a mainstay of creative music in Switzerland, she has an on-and-off performing relationship for several decades, and it seems "Ulrichsberg" is a peak of their collaborative efforts.

I'll have to get it, someday. But so far I have no Schweizer, except for the recent solo and a broadcast of a duo with Hamid Drake. I have not listened to that one in a long time, and cannot give any further information about how it is.

Did they record together officially?

As far as I know there's no "official" recording of Schweizer with Drake.

Ulrichsberg is wonderful. Favre is great, and the interplay is fantastic. Very highly recommended! :tup

Is anyone here familar with Noah Howard? I heard this disc for the first time today and enjoyed it enough to look into more of his work. I was not blown away on first listen and was wondering how representative of the rest of his work this set is. Those who do not like vocalizations with their jazz are advised to pass on this disc.

Hope everything's OK. Looking forward to "seeing" you back here.

Not exactly familiar but I been getting enjoyment from "Traffic" on Frame ( quartet with Bobby Few , recorded Paris 1980?). Some singing a la Shepp but none the worse for it

Thanks for the :tup on "Ulrichsberg"! I think that would be one I'd make an exception despite my famous buying freeze (which has barely started yet, anyway).

However, I hate that cover! Intakt has come around in recent years to produce decent to good covers, but this one reminds me of their old releases, just plain ugly...

I saw him live at one of the annual but now defunct "Groningen Jazz Marathon" festivals in the early or mid-1970s. Other than that, no.
