I don't have much to add to Late's post, except that I'm not too fond of the Candid recordings; like Late indicates, Shepp doesn't sound "right", and it spoils the music for me, in spite of Lacy and Neidlinger - it even made me sell my Japanese Candids...

Shepp doesn't sound "right", yes. Also, Dennis Charles can be too stiff, in my opinion. Taylor's music really took off the first time when Sunny Murray (and then Andrew Cyrille) took over the drum chair.

The three tracks on Gil Evans' "Into The Hot" (reissued on CD Taylor/Roswell Rudd, "Mixed") are pretty essential, in my opinion!

The Montmartre stuff is some of the best music I ever heard! There is a 2CD reissue (lousy packaging, but probably best possible sound) on Revenant. It's OOP, but maybe you can find it. Essential stuff!

D.D., I'm into my buying stop now. Anyone feel free to send me "Funny Rat"... ;)

ubu, did you make it through the 2Ts... set?

Not yet, but I seriously consider not buying anything new at least until summer (july or august, that would be), if not till the end of the year (with exception of stuff going OOP or real good sales), so I might soon get to it. What I heard so far is very impressive!

For those interested: the Fred Anderson / Hamid Drake Thrill Jockey set Back Together Again can be pre-ordered from CDUniverse for only $11.19. The set includes a CD-ROM of documentary footage.

there was a not so favourable review posted somewhere on this board I believe

That's strange, it hasn't even been released yet.

John, you mean this one?

Ah yes, the Derek Taylor pre-release review. Sounds good to me - maybe with the exception of Drake's chant on the closing track.

There were a few DT posts about this set on JC too (he's a regular poster over there).

I thought the "not so positive" comments in that review were about another Fred Anderson disc?

My favorite "review" of this so far was posted over on JC and read:

Oh.

My.

Oh my yes.

or something to that effect.

Can't wait to hear this one!

From the Pi REcordings newsletter:

Greetings from Pi Recordings

Please note that we are offering a sale on our catalog; details at the end of this email.

The last six months have been exciting for Pi: We were honored to have released "The Meeting" from The Art Ensemble of Chicago, surely one of the most important and influential bands in the history of jazz. We were particularly pleased at the time that the CD would feature the exciting return of saxophonist Joseph Jarman to the band after a ten-year absence. We obviously did not know at the time that the "The Meeting" would, along with our upcoming release "Sirius Calling" be the final recordings of The Art Ensembleэs great and long-time bassist, Malachi Favors Maghostut.

Wadada Leo Smith and Anthony Braxtonэs "Organic Resonance" documented the first set of their two set appearance at Tonic in April 03. The second set will be released in late summer of 04. ьOrganic Resonance,ю along with ьThe Meeting,ю was voted one of the best jazz releases of the year in the recent year-end issue of The Wire. We are also pleased to say that we were one of only two labels to have two releases listed.

Our release, guitarist Liberty Ellman's "Tactiles" has been a fantastic success. These are some of the things critics are saying about Liberty:

"A guitarist cut from neither of the cookie cutters that produced legions of note-happy virtuosos and techno-geek fusioneers. "Tactiles" is one of the year's best, showing a strong bond with Mark Shim and serious compositional powers."

– Gary Giddins, The Village Voice

"Mr. Ellman sets the bar high for himself. His ballads are special, exotic things: their melodies are memorable, and in one ballad, "Temporary Aid," Mr. Ellman and Mr. Shim showed that they were evolving into foils for each other."

– Ben Ratliff, The New York Times

"With his new CD, Liberty Ellman emerges as one of the most intriguing, albeit unorthodox, guitarists on the New York scene today. An album of original, esoteric compositions marked by dense polyrhythms, dissonant, angular lines and an organic logic that ties the whole thing together in brilliant fashion."

– Bill Milkowski, Jazz Times

Finally, we are incredibly proud of our latest release: "In What Language?" by pianist/composer Vijay Iyer in collaboration with poet/hip hop artist Mike Ladd. Itэs a song cycle that depicts the interior monologues of various people of color (Middle Eastern, African, South Asian) as they confront the new reality of the post-9/11 setting of an international airport, a new reality of suspicion and alienation. Mike Laddэs poetry is dense, full of keen allusions to culture and history. And the stories they tell are intense, harrowing and even funny. It is not often that a contemporary work in jazz can be called really ьnew,ю ьdifferentю or ьimportant.ю We believe "In What Language?" is all of those things. Not just another mashing together of disparate musical forms, IWL succeeds in seamlessly melding improvised jazz with poetry, plus hip-hop, funk, Indian rhythms, chamber music and a hundred other polyglot influences. It's a jazz salvo fired in a completely new and different direction.

We'll let the critics speak further on our behalf:

"...it's that elusive thing, underground political music that sounds good... a breakthrough hip-hop-jazz fusion... it's one of the smartest I've heard, and one of the few that really works."

Ben Ratliff, The New York Times

"...a monumental work that seamlessly combines sound and voice for an artistic statement that should reverberate for years to come... simply a masterpiece."

Signal to Noise

****1/2 (4 1/2 stars, out of 5)

Downbeat

"The marriage of sound and word are so complete that it becomes impossible to imagine one component of the project without the other... a tour de force."

JazzTimes

You can also listen to an interview with Vijay and Mike, which aired on NPRэs All Things Considered today, at http://www.npr.org/features/feature.php?wfId=1770647.

I finally had a chance to listen to Exploding Customer - Live at Glen Miller Cafe on Ayler today. It is a fantastic disc, very highly recommended. I'm guessing that a lot of people are going to see the name and pass them by, which would be a mistake. A lot less "out" than I had expected. Some nice tunes and playing by four musicians I still know next to nothing about.

I also finally listened to this one, and I found it quite nice. Nothing groundbreaking -tunefull energetic "classic" free jazz, but stiull a nice sincere music, and a lot of fun.

And how about a concert like this:

New York, Saturday, March 20th: PETER BROTZMANN & MILFORD GRAVES at 8 & 10pm at 8pm Vision Club Series downstairs at St. Nicholas Church - 10th St. & Ave. A

I need to find a way to move to NYC.

Hopefully this concert gets recorded and released...

I've been listening to this one (again):

Roscoe Mitchell - L-R-G/The Maze/S II Examples - Nessa NCD-14

The first two tracks are :tup, but I'm less enthusiastic about the last track. Nevertheless, a very interesting album. Recommended.
