Listening to Joe Maneri Quartet:  Tenderly (hatOLOGY 525)

:o

Wonderful stuff.

Hmm... I don't remember it being that wonderful...

Will listen to it today.

I have to join in the dissent. Tenderly has never done anything for me. I gave it another spin after reading your post and, while there are a few nice moments, the disc as a whole just doesn't "click" for me.

I had a further listen to Tender Moments -- this time on my home system as opposed to my office system (glorified boom box) and have revised my opinion somewhat.

While I enjoy the first two tracks, I find both to be compositionally weak. And considering that their combined playing time is around one-third the length of the disk, that could be considered a clincher in not recommending the CD.

On the other hand, I find what remains of the disk to be wonderful.

(Gotta love Randy Peterson's apocalyptic playing style. I'm convinced that if there is a hell and Randy and I are bad boys, Randy will be playing drums at hell's fiery gates. Amazing the wide sonic spread Peterson gets on this disk. That usually irritates the hell of me but not this time.)

I know this one's been talked to death, but I loved The Vienna Art Orchestra: The Minimalism of Erik Satie.  It has a very otherworldly quality, with Woody Schabata being very good, and minimal with the vibes.  It is very arranged music, not a lot of room for improv. by the musicians, but that is something I can take in Big Bands.  The standout track for me was Satie ist mir im Traum 3 x nicht eschienen.  So slow, intense, and very good solo work by Harry Sokal.  Lauren Newton is an aquired taste however, and I haven't quite aquired it yet.

Hang in there with Ms. Newton. She's a keeper.

Spent way too much on my visit to Ameoba's.  But, I have an excuse: I saw the Jimmy Lyons box set, and knew I had to get it, or else I would never be able post in this thread again (besides, it's a limited edition, right??).  I'll have to listen to Lyons over the weekend.  Of course, I still trying to figure out an excuse for buying all the other stuff I did. <_<

If I could, I'd like to make Jimmy Lyons the patron saint of this thread.

But as I'm not really into the whole religion thing... :w

Tony, have you had a chance to listen to Shipp/Maneri's "Gravitational Systems"? I would be interested in knowing your opinion - it's a very..hmmm.. "non-obvious" disc.

I ccommit to trying to listen to Joe Maneri's "Tenderly" and "Coming Down the Mountain" over the weekend and positng my opinion here.

Matthew, glad you like the VAO disc! I think it's awesome!

If you like Lauren Newton, check out her "Filigree" on hatOLOGY. It's OOP, but it seems to be around, and quite easy to find, as of today.

I saw her live in a duo setting with Joelle Léandre, and did not really like the concert (too much comedy, too much nonsense, too fragmented to make sense, too much eclectisism (sp?) for my likings), but the CD is very fine!

Tony, I fully agree!

Regarding Lyons: I got Eddie Gale's "Black Rhythm Happening" used two days ago. Lyons guesting on that one!

Hard to describe the music. I'd say if you like Hills disc with voices, and maybe that Shepp thing "Attica Big Band in Concert" (2CD set on some French label), you would like it. Anyhow, I guess many people could hate Gale.

Lyons has some fine spots, however.

Did he often do such sideman gigs (besides Taylor, that is)?

And is this Eddie Gale the same man as Eddie Gale Stevens Jr. on Cecil's "Unit Structures"? I guess so, as on "Black Rhythm Happening" the person playing guitar and leading the voices is one Joann Gale Stevens.

Also got Leo Smith's "Tao Njia", although I am not at all sure I like it. It was so cheap I had to take it home to explore it thoroughly (will report).

Has anyone some comments to make on the upcoming Kabell box by Smith? I do not know him very well, actually, I hardly know him at all, but that box looks interesting!

Cut it out with all this Lauren Newton nonsence, get the QUARTETT disc now and enjoy REALLY good singing!

Looks cool, I admit! However, mostly because of Priester ( :excited: ) and Peacock, I don't know Jay Clayton!

Now the only problem is that my buying stop has begun, as I'm happy owner of too many hats and totally broke...

I really like both Hill's "Lifet Every Voice" and Shepp's "Attica Blues" (I don't have "...in Concert" thing - it's on Terrones label). I'll get these Gale CDs some day. And it is the same reissue lable that did Ayler and (very lame) Byard Lancaster last year with excellent sound quality. Good.

David, my Shepp is on Blue Marge (1001) - rec. Paris Oct. 24, 1979. My favorite Shepp of post 1966, I think!

That Lancaster is lame, you say? I wanted to pick it up some day. I have Lancasters Gazell disc "Worlds", and I'm not sure I really like it.

"Black Rhythm Happening" came out on Water as well as on French Blue Note CD. The Water reissue however seems to sound much better (Lon replaced it - see the Gale thread somewhere else on this board). I picked up the French BN for 9 CHF, used, but practically new, it seems.

The other Gale Water release "Ghetto Music" seems to be cool, too, but I never heard it.

The Ayler is marvellous (besides the last track with vocals and some stray chaotic moments that leave me cold).

Yeahm Marge, Futura and a couple of other imprints are part of the Terrones group of labels. See here: http://disquesfuturaetmarge.ifrance.com/di...sfuturaetmarge/

They have a lot of great stuff, actually. Frank Lowe, Ted Curson, Waldron, Shepp, Richard Davis, etc. And they are sitting on a Sharrock live record!

Lancaster is lame, lame, lame. Beautiful alto sound though, but that's it.

THey had an ugly old website that hasn't been updated for years - it listed their old LPs as well (the new one does not) - there was some very intriguing stuff there as far as I remember.

Now, the new site lists a lot of stuff I was interested in (including Shepp's "Attica Blues" live thing) as sold out - just when I purchased nearly all the Hats I was looking for and was planning to enjoy an honest buying freeze!

As for the Terrones CDs I know, I can highly recommend Ted Curson's "Pop Wine", beautiful Waldron/Dyani's "Some Jive Ass Boer" and Richard Davis' "Total Package" (with mighty Ricky Ford on tenor).

Thanks for the recs! The Dyani and Davis were the one that really jumped at me when I looked through the site! However, the Dyani is OOP, too! Gotta hunt that one!

Can make CDRs of the Shepp if you're interested (not right now, but as soon as I found out how it all works and where to get cheap blanks).

Jay Clayton.....the couple of times I've seen her it was fairly excruciating, actually. Nice voice, but no taste. Maybe in less indulgent settings (i.e. ones free of Jerry Granelli) she'd sound better.

Recently was sent a promo of a Byard Lancaster disc, The Out Cry, which was so shockingly amateurish (complete with an out-of-tune bassist & clutzy drummer) that it left me really wondering what to think: is all his stuff that bad, or was he more of a force to be reckoned with way back?

Speaking of the VAO, what's the word on their cd, Duke Ellington's Sound of Love. I'm a huge Ellington fan -- is this worth searching for?

Matthew, I don't know the Ellington disc (they recently made a second), but it got good reviews here. No need to search, I think, as it's in print: VAO on TCB records. I don't know if they're distributed in the US, but Amazon seems to have them.

Here is the homepage of the VAO. Look at the discography for some more information. I think all their recent recordings are still in print. I don't know too many of their records, however.

Thanks for the VAO home, YRH, I'm going have to get both Ellington volumes. Just love the Duke, and this VAO sounds like a band I have to get more of.

He-he, found Sharrock's interview, where he is talking about his FUtura record:

and then I didn't do any more records again for twelve years -- well, I did, no, I did one record, there's a French record, if the collectors are really crazy they can find this thing, it's horrible, but I did it with a trio in Paris, and it's called "Dance with Me, Montana," and it's a terrible record. But hey, it's there, and I gotta live with it, but maybe I did my worst record, and that's how I always felt about that record, you know, but that was the one record that I did in that, like, twelve-year space.

Well, it's OK, now I don't mind Terrones not having reissued it...

Matthew, if you get a chance to catch them live, do so! They're a very good live act, with show and all, but pretty cool! I only saw them once, so far.

I really must agree with your assessment of Gravitational Systems, Д.Д.

What really surprised me is that, even though Shipp wrote all the tunes ('cept for those associated with Coltrane), this disk seems to be very much a showcase for the HUGE talents of Maneri. After listening to Maneri on this disk, if I were a musician facing the prospect of performing with this young man, I'd be shaking in my boots!

Fabulous music!

The Multiplication Table is my next listen. Might also be interesting to spin Out Right Now (hatOLOGY 561) with Joe Maneri, Mat Maneri and ( :rfr ) Joe Morris.

Wow, what a great album this is - with one exception, the second track (Greensleeves). They should have deconstructed that old warhorse until nothing was left of it...

Very imaginative playing, with lots of great interaction. I love Shipp's piano playing.

I've just been listening to this one for the second time:

e20622pzrq8.jpg

and it's gone right to my "get rid of" pile. What a waste of time! Another "guitar-infested" album - Brad Shepik this time. I dislike this kind of guitar playing immensely, it sounds totally out of place to me in free / improv.
