Posted December 13, 2005 Report Posted December 13, 2005 (edited) For anyone who has not yet heard Julius Hemphill's fantastic album Dogon A.D., Tim Berne is now offering it as a free download on the Screwgun Records site. Loading! Flying to Moscow tomorrow, so will listen on a plain. ------------------ Somehow, totally effortlessly recoieved a Cluson 3 "Rara Avis", still sealed in the mail. Damage - €20, including shipping. Placed a market-place pre-order at amazon.de three months ago, and voila. If anybody has a good candidate for new OOP obsession, let me know. I am contemplating John Steven's SME "Karyobin" (thanks to jgthomas, other potential target Gustafsson/Lovens "Nothing to Read" has been located and rescued form some second-hand CD store in Texas and is now making its joyful journey to new (my) home). Nate Dorward Posted December 13, 2005 Report Posted December 13, 2005 Al Jones once gave me a technical explanation of why sine waves change in sound when you move your head--basically it's the Doppler effect, which is unnoticeable on normally pitched sounds when you move your head but is noticeable on very very high pitched sounds because even a slight compression or expansion of the soundwave will have a discernable effect. Karyobin should be in every collection. Quote
John B Posted December 13, 2005 Report Posted December 13, 2005 (edited) I just picked up my first disc from Loose Torque, called Calling Signals. Frode Gjerstad, Louis Moholo, Hasse Poulsen and Nick Stephens. On first listen it is a very interesting set. I'm not familiar with Stephens or Poulsen, who sounds a lot like Derek Bailey here. Review over on OneFinalNote. FYI, discs on Loose Torque are cdrs. This is a very strong release. I'll have to check out some more of their discs one of these days. Guest Chaney Posted December 13, 2005 Report Posted December 13, 2005 (edited) I bought the one that I have used on eBay for $6.95. ~~~~~~~~~~ David! You located a relatively inexpensive copy of Rara Avis. Good for you! My current obsession is the few OOP Limited Sedition titles that I don't own. I've also been wondering if I should gather Acta titles as those, I believe, will vanish as John Butcher has moved on to his new label, Weight of Wax. Keeping in mind that other labels have recently reissued Acta material. Not yet residents of OOPLand and looking good are the four titles offered by Hi4Head Records. Guest Posted December 13, 2005 Report Posted December 13, 2005 Here is a solid candidate for never finding a copy of: For this, I even have no idea where to look Quote
Nate Dorward Posted December 13, 2005 Report Posted December 13, 2005 Watch out with the Hi4Head label. Great music, but the guy who runs it is incompetent at remastering; the one disc I heard from the label had frightful sound, & a specialist in restoring 1970s audio gave me a quick discussion of why (in connection with the weird distorted sax sound on the last track on the disc): The last track shows that the tapes needed ‘baking’. . . . Around 1975, some or all of the tape manufacturers decided to stop using whale products, and started to use a lubricant from another source. This worked fine at the time, but eventually was found to dry out. Playing such a dried-out tape results in screeching noises both in the room and in the loudspeakers (as on that last track), and probably bits of tape oxide coming off (all over one’s machine). It was found that if one heated them gently over a period of time, they could be played OK once or twice – a process that acquired the inaccurate name ‘baking.’ . . . Sounds ridiculous, but it works – many of the tapes from the 70s & 80s that I have used were unplayable before this process. In other words, Hi4Head's failure to master the tapes properly quite likely is damaging them further. The music is great, though. Quote

Yes! I have a bunch of such screechy tapes in a closet. Sometimes it also helps to play a wet tape, if I remeber correctly, but the oxide still comes off and the stuff eventually becomes really dead-sounding, no lows, no highs... Quote

Guest Chaney Posted December 14, 2005 Report Posted December 14, 2005 (edited) Thanks but DMG shows no Dunmall. Corrcetion: Shows LOTS of Duns but not too much really available. I was wanting to test the Duns Limited Edition waters and the sample for Nimes featured on the Duns site always cracked me up. I hesitated, I lost. Edited December 14, 2005 by Chaney Quote

Top of the page, ronnie trogladyte. ~~~~~~~~~~ Earlier today I checked out the Crazy Jazz listings for the two Evans CDs that David Ayers mentions. £12.95 = $22.38. Ouch! Who said life isn't tough? Well, over here we are used to these prices! These really are great records. I succumbed. By the way, 'Evans?' I think I meant 'Parker.' Received these today. Д.Д.: How'd you make out? Д.Д. Posted December 17, 2005 Report Posted December 17, 2005 (edited) Firends, I think this reissue on Terrones is worth mentioning: Futura Ger 16 Dizzy Reece quintet From in to out Dizzy Reece (trompette), John Gilmore (saxophone ténor), Siegfried Kessler (piano), Patrice Caratini (contrebasse), Art Taylor (drums) Créteil, le 23 octobre 1970 Great to see Terrones is digging into its vaults! Jaki Byard solo disc released (reissued) earlier this year was outstanding, and I am looking forward to hearing more unearthed Terrones treasures. --------------------- Looking through the Terrones website, noticed that ths one is back in print: Marge 22 Richard Davis quartet Total Package Richard Davis (contrebasse), Ricky Ford (saxophone ténor), Curtis Clark (piano) Andrew Cyrille (drums) Paris les 27 et 28 juillet 1997 More on mainstream side, but definitely with an edge (Ford's solos are incredibly tense) and just beautifully played. And there is a recent release I missed: Marge 32 Claudine François quartet Lonely Woman Claudine François (piano), Steve Potts (saxophone alto et soprano), Jean-Jacques Avenel (contrebasse) John Betsch (drums) Ivry-sur-Seine les 18 et 19 juin 2003 Not familiar with François, but with Potts, Avenel and Betsch, this should not be too bad? Guest Chaney Posted December 20, 2005 Report Posted December 20, 2005 (edited) Ir really threw me when I first heard of this loon -- Dunmall -- playing bagpipes; I really thought it just had to be a musical goof. Then I heard folks who I actually respected (this board, mostly this thread [big surprise] and JC) raving over (get this) SOLO bagpipe playing! inSANE! Color me chagrined. NOT at all what I had (ignorantly) expected. Still haven't listened to Hit And Run on my home system but what I have heard blew me away. And now solo bagpipes? Sounds delicious. + + + + + + + + + + Wow! Nice prices on those FMP titles. Question is: Is the music any good? FMP titles offered by Caiman. KOWALD, PETER~Was da ist NEW @ CAIMAN! - $12.52. No idea about these FMPs, but I have some idea about some solo bagpipes, that to my mind is even more powerful than Dunmall's blowing: Matthew Welch "Hag at the Churn" (newsonic) Unlike Dunmall, Welch has a substantial composed element in his opuses, and it definitely benefits the cohesiveness of the music. And just some unbelievable technique and sounds. Avialable at Cadence. Quote
Д.Д. Posted December 21, 2005 Report Posted December 21, 2005 Get Brötzmann's "14 love poems" for $12.52 NOW!!!! Quote
jon abbey Posted December 21, 2005 Report Posted December 21, 2005 there is no way that anyone paid FMP for those discs at those prices. a lot of times these cheap prices come up because an unethical distributor has simply not paid the label for the package they received and either sold the discs themselves or sold them in bulk cheaply to someone else who sells them to customers or stores. I have no idea of the specifics of this situation, but at least be aware of the likelihood of why this seller is offering such good prices. Quote
