I've never heard a nice thing said about Thesis even among ardent Morris & Shipp fans. The Penguin Guide, FWIW, gives it the lowest rating of either musician's albums (two & a half stars).

Just don't try associating Morris & Bailey in front of Morris! He tends to see red at the idea, to judge by interviews.

Incidentally one mildly interesting discographical oddity is the disc Registered Firm on Bailey's Incus label: the Hession/Wilkinson/Fell trio with special guest Joe Morris. Frankly, it sounds like a good H/W/F date with a superfluous guitarist.

No for Thesis.

Ubu, let me know what you think of Maneri/Shipp.

Now, I wouldn't mind some Derek Bailey recommendations - I don't think I have anything by him in my collection.

Now, thinking of this, I think I have a couple of CDs with Bailey, but probably not the most "representative" ones. I remember enjoying a lot this one:

I also saw him live in duo with Susie Ibarra, and was underwhelmed by both - uninspired noodling with very little listening to each other.

Here's some info on VicissEtudes:

http://www.shef.ac.uk/misc/rec/ps/efi/labe...ndom/ra002.html

I don't know if it's still in print, though. Highly worth obtaining, though.

I contacted Frank Gratkowski directly, and he said that he does not have any copies left but would burn me a CDR if Georg Gräwe would agree. Today I received a message with an apology from Frank, saying that Gräwe is against burning a CDR!

Amazing.

Ubu, let me know what you think of Maneri/Shipp.

Listened to "So What" yesterday, and intended to follow it with the duo CD, but I was sooo fucking tired...

"So What" is rather difficult, I think, to get into. Very fragmented, generally too much Maneri too much in front of everything else - this was my first impression. The fragmentation makes it hard to follow, but also rather exciting at moments. I liked some of the Miles covers (Solar the best, actually), but I think I liked them better because at least some short pieces of melodies I like and know for many years are discernable there, while I of course never heard any of the originals by Maneri.

The electric violin is an instrument I usually HATE (one of the worst examples of electric violin can be found on "Exodus" by the New Power Generation, which otherwise is a GREAT disc full of grooving old school funk), I think Maneri creates interesting sounds, also covering the range usually assigned to the cello makes things interesting. Yet at moments where he is in that low range, I often thought he still was too far in the foreground, and Shipp was generally less heard than I had liked to.

However, this disc (as well as Joe M's "Tenderly") is one I will listen to again.

I hope to find the time to listen to "Dissonant Characters", soon, too.

That one in Zurich looks cool! Gotta go!

The Speed/Black affairs look interesting, too! They played Willisau last year, have the broadcast. Gotta listen again. Black's a great drummer, probably one of the most interesting ones around these days!

Favre, of course, the master percussionist... no idea though, who his partner is, neither what exactly that instrument could be.

Regarding the other concerts in Geneva, let me have a look...

I have heard something by Stephano Saccon, but I guess he won't be of too much interest for you. He plays alto, sort of Cannonball style, adds some electronic and a strong rhythm section (that's his own band, not the ones on that concert "GASP")

Jan Brönnimann released a CD on Universal recently, called "Brink Man Ship" - sort of jazz-electronica, rather close to easy listening often, sometimes though they his some interesting grooves. I don't know the CD, have a broadcast. Reimann is the guitar player of that project. No idea who the cellist is.

Marcel Papaux is a great mainstram drummer (maybe there's more to him than mainstream, I'm not so familiar with him) - check him out when he plays with some other band.

Coming to march...

You know Geri Allen, I suppose...

also Vandermark.

Otherwise, it looks like almost everything in march includes "chant"... And I don't know the musicians involved, safe:

Domenic Landolf, a talented post-bop tenor, with a good band (Brodbeck is good, seems his regular crew).

Yves Massy plays/leads an interesting crossover project called "Rosetta" - mixing jazz and some sort of folklore.

That's it. I guess you can pass the ones I know, maybe if you get some more information about the concerts, check out some, but I would not know which ones.

king ubu, thanks. I will try to go to most of these concerts. The club is really close: 15 minutes of drive from me or more likely, 15-minute train ride + 7-minute refreshing walk (since watchful Swiss police is about to confiscate my driving license for speeding). It might be also a good way to obtain some of the CDs by the artists in this inhumane country (today I received some bills from La Poste: import taxes for CDs - insane!).

BTW, the Reid-Sharp-Torn "GTR OBLQ" is fantastic - dark, sometimes funky and groovy, often bluesy, very melodic (I was expecting (hoping?) more NOISE. Good stuff.

Glad you enjoy the disc (that IS the one I sent you, yes?)

And nice to hear you got a cool jazz location close by!

Not too much going on here.

The Speed-Sverisson-Black-Vu group will play Zurich on Feb. 18, but they want 25 CHF, and I'm rather short.

Enrico Pieranunzi will play solo on Feb. 22 (same prize)

Kurt Rosenwinkel on Feb. 28 (with Barney McCall - keyb, Matt Penman - b, Jonathan Blake -d)

Then Harry Sokal/Wolfgang Puschnig with Gerald Veasley and Jojo Mayer - this might be one I will go - on March 3.

On March 7 Coscia/Trovesi (another one I'd like to see)

On March 13 Scott Colley (with Ralph Alessi, Jason Moran and Bill Stewart) (another one I'd be interested in)

March 16 Stephan Wittwer/Bernd Schurer

March 19 Mingus Big Band

and March 30, Tomasz Stanko, with the quartet on his latest ECM disc. Saw them live, beautiful concert, might have to go once again!

Not as bad as I though, when I look at it, actually!

Hey, this one looks really interresting - I'll try to be there.

David, here's the link:

Online reservation is ok, you just have to be there half an hour before the concert begins.

You know Jojo Mayer?

I saw Jojo Mayer with his drum&bass project about two weeks ago. WOW! What a drummer! All that ridiculously fast break beat stuff... they played two hours and this guy made absolutely no mistake. Unbelievable.

He lived in NYC for some years, I think. I saw him live only once, accompanying Dhafer Yousef. He was playing with great control, very inventive, without overpowering the music (which is the problem I have with some of his more d'n'b things). The bass player was Dieter Ilg (german), and Markus (?) Stockhausen (the son of K-H) was on trumpet (& very carefully and sparingly used synth/midi). A great concert!
