CD EMANEM 4115

JohnStevens-RogerSmith-JohnButcher:SME `A New Distance` 18.00

The augmented edition of a previous CD published on ACTA (addition of 2 tunes recorded in studio).

Essential music, essential JOHN STEVENS

The live part has been recorded few months (Weeks?) before the too early Death of STEVENS.

What's so extraordinary, here, it's that it shows the incredible evolution of the drummer who goes enter, in this record, the world of "microtonal" impro. Stunning.

EMANEM 4116 Wilkinson(as/bs)Mattos(b)Noble(perc):FreeBase`Ins&Outs'

This, is in the manner of the trio of SIMON H. FELL (Wilkinson was a long time partner of the bassiste), close to a records like FOOM! FOOM!.

A freeblowing session that most of you will like. I do like it much.

EMANEM 4117 JohnStevens4 `NewCool`

E.Jones(ss/ts)G.Crosby(b)B.Wallen(tpt)

Another essential John Stevens.

Recorded in 1972, this is John Stevens in his "Free jazz" mood.

Don't know this musicians. Never heard of them before or after. But they.

This is also an augmented version of a concert that I had on a previous CD (on the label THE JAZZ LABEL). The sound quality have been greatly improve.

PSI 501 Derek Bailey - Evan Parker `London Concert` 1975 8 cuts

Essential. If you are tired or bored by the recent production of this two let' say than, here they are at the peak of their talent. Genius at work.

Essential, essential, esserntial...

PSI 502 Paul Rutherford `Iskra 3` RobertJarvis/LawrenceCasserley9/04

Another Forgettable PAUL RUTHERFORD.

PSI 503 UrsLeimgruber(ss/ts)JacquesDemierre(p)B.Phillips(b)3`LDP-Cologne`live

A great record by a great band who sound like nobody else.

They go through the "microtonal" way and, suddenly, in the same piece, they explode in a in an energetic "free impro" before returning without any warning to the former mood.

Stunning. And the sound is great.

More later...

Carnatic saxophone: Prasant Radhakrishnan. Very interesting, I say. And the guy was 17 when it was recorded!

Friends, I would like to reitirate my recommendation for this one - very interestign music (check the samples out) - and a part of the $5 sale. It's really amazing how Indians adapt Western instruments to their traditional music at the same time advancing the technique on the instrument. I will get Prasant's other CDs as well.

I will check him out, D.D., thanks. You are probably aware that Rudresh Mahanthappa has been touring with Kadri Gopalanth, the Carnatic saxophone legend - everyone seems to agree, and he told me that a recording of this project will come out next, though I forgot to ask when, so we'll have to wait and see.

Kadri Gopalanth is Prasan't's guru, according tothe CD booklet - woud be very curious to hear him (particularly with Mahanthappa)!

What's so extraordinary, here, it's that it shows the incredible evolution of the drummer who goes enter, in this record, the world of "microtonal" impro. Stunning.

To clarify: (1) the additional material is a combination of excerpts from an interview plus two short tracks with a quartet (Neil Metcalfe on flute)--lots of insight into Stevens' methods here. (2) the live concert is actually from half a year before Stevens' death. (3) it's indeed a great album, & the sound on "Stig" is noticeably better than on the Acta CD (Martin Davidson professed surprise at this to me, saying he didn't remember doing much more than bumping up the volume, but after auditioning both versions I still think there's more to it than that).

"Another"? He's done some great albums (including with his Iskra groups). But this certainly isn't one of them--though I found it more palatable if you skipped the opening track. For dedicated fans of horn+electronics albums only.

Yes this is a great one. It's a bit tougher to get into than their debut Wing Vane but is equally fine.

you'd be amazed at what simply raising the volume a few db can do sometimes.

how are those Ersts treating you, Nate? I haven't heard much from you about those, just curious...

Slowly-slowly-slowly I am going through the FMR CDs.

Steve Hubback / Paal Nilssen-Love - "Off the map". Improvised duets of two mighty percussionists. What I liked about it, that there is no heavy drum BANGING as such - while music gets pretty busy at times, it is all well-measured and quite elegant. Mostly rather quiet and gentle. Very coherent also - this is music, not a just pallette of sounds. Very diverse and well-recorded. I was listening fascinated and will return to if often.

CD Universe has "Sonny Simmons: Complete ESP-Disk recordings" avaialble for pre-order. Street date: August 2nd. I was very impressed by ESP-disk remastering of Ayler's "Bells-Prophesy" and Frank Wright's set, so will be getting these ones as well. I am looking forward to seeing Giuseppi Logan set one day. Any other SLAM recommendations?

Yes, I you've liked anything at all by this duo or think you might, I highly recommend Steve Lacy and Mal Waldron's "Let's Call This...Esteem".

Recorded live in 1993 at the Playhouse Theatre, Oxford. 9 tracks which end up taking 78 minutes 15 seconds. Exemplary playing all around - and really great solos by both on In a Sentimental Mood and the Monk covers, there are 4.

Listened to and enjoyed my emusic download of One More Time - Steve Lacy and Joelle Leandre.  With emusic you miss liner notes, so I'm wondering if anyone might post a translation of the French phone message that ends the CD.  The final "Love you baby, au revoir" needs no translating and is a touching ending.

Just received it. Haven't had time to listen to the music, but I did listen to the mailbox message track. This is Lacy's call to Leandre in which he says that he listened to their recording and it is terrific and it should be released - this is what he actually wanted to discuss. He says he is not sure who could release it. Then he says he will call back on Saturday. "Hope your heart is OK. Love you baby, au revoir".

Apparently jazzloft has a sale on Hat titles, these are all between 9.99 and 13.99 and there's a "buy two get one free" on top.

So these are all discs I'm happy to have (now I have others also on sale which I'm not much fond of, but the curious can ask),

Ran Blake - Horace is Blue

Ran Blake - Something to Live For

I do not know which one'd I'd pick of the two. I like them both. Some people, so I've heard, have problems with the guitar player but even if that is the case there's enough material on both without the guitar player to provide plenty of food for thought.

Clusone Trio - An Hour With...

Of their recent work, I prefer the more difficult to find Rara Avis but like this one a lot, too. This comes from a concert, iirc, and so there a number of long medleys. Recommended.

Dave Douglas's Tiny Bell Trio - Constellations

This one's highly recommended. For me, easily the best of the Tiny Bell Trio's albums and one of the best, if not the best, representation in my collection of Douglas's work as a leader. Great, mostly upbeat/koyful, playing by all and I just love the tune selection.

Richard Grossman - Even Your Ears

I do not have Where the Sky Ended so I can't compare but I like this. Need to give it a spin soon, actually, as it's been a while since I last listened to it.

Sve Ake-Johansson - Six Little Pieces for Quintet

This is in the vein of vintage-free-jazz, if you can fathom, and considered as such, is very good music. Great playing by Axel Dorner and Sten Sandell in particular.

Steve Lacy - Clinkers

Steve Lacy - Morning Joy

The first is solo, the second with his quartet. Both are highly recommended.

Misha Mengelberg - The Root of the Problem

Now this, depends, if you like Misha in general, it's one to get. Not among his best work, on the other hand. There's quite a bit of diversity so I like it fine but again, nto something I'd recommend just like that.

Cecil Taylor - It Is In the Brewing Luminous

Highly recommended.

Simon Nabatov - Sneak Preview

I go back to Nabatov's other work more frequently but this is as fine an example of his piano playing in a trio as any I've heard. Won't disappoint - and if you haven't heard him, then by all means go ahead. Tom Rainey on drums and Mark Helias on bass.

In general I would agree with your assesment, except for Ran Blake. I hate his style - I find it pretentious and hysterical. He is the reason I can hardly listen to Memories of Vienna (hatOLOGY) - his duo with Braxton, despite the latter's outstanding playing.

Nabatov is good, but not essential - muscular mainstream pieno trio. A bit too voluble for my tastes (not only Nabatov, but also Rainey - good druimmer, but tends to overplay). I would recommend Nabatov's more risk-taking works, like his epic Master and Margarita (Leo) or his really briliant duo with Han Bennink Chat Room (also on Leo).

Mengelberg's "Root..." is a difficult one. Parts of it are really boring, other are good (duos with saxophonist, if I remember correctly - haven't listend to it for years). Not essential, I'd say.

Anyway, I assume Funny Rat regulars have all the hatOLOGY titles already.

Blue Winter is the complete concert I attended in December.  I loved the show and am looking forward to hearing how it translates to cd. I'll be ordering this one today.

I'm also going to order PERLES NOIRES volume II, if only to hear Oluyemi Thomas' contributions.  I'll decide if I need volume I after hearing volume II.

Blue Winter is fantastic, on first listen. The first disc is very good, taking things slowly and never getting too heated. The second disc is where things really take off. The first track on disc two is 38 minutes long and, if you enjoy Hamid bringing the funk, is nirvana. Hamid, William and Fred bring the funk and get a massive groove going.

My opinion is probably colored by having been in attendance at the show, but I would still highly recommend this album. I wouldn't rate it as highly as Live at the Velvet Lounge, with Kowald and Drake, but this one is really very good.

I haven't listened to the Sunny Murray disc yet, but noticed that Oluyemi Thomas appears on almost 50 minutes. Four tracks, all recorded live in a trio w/ Thomas, Murray and Sabir Mateen.

Link to comment

The Oluyemi tracks w/ Sunny are good. Not up to the level of the Alan Silva disc, but solid nonetheless. The final three tracks on the disc, recorded in studio with Sabir and a pianist who is heavily influenced by Cecil Taylor named John Blum, work better and are more immediately exciting.

Before this I'd never heard of John Blum. Is anyone here familiar with him?

Hello,

Although Rastascan is not a distributor, we do end up with extra copies of CDs through trades with musicians and labels. That's what's on this list.

Some are on non-US labels, some are. Everything here is new and unplayed. However, some are not shrinkwrapped because they arrived w/o jewel cases, and some are in sleeves rather than jewel cases). Only have one of each, so it's first come, first served.

Each is $12 + shipping (even the double CDs are $12!!!). Contact me at gino@rastascan.com. Hope you find something you like!

cheers,

ginorobair

I recommend to anyone interested in this kind of music to grab a copy of the "Assumed Possibilities" (music on the borderline of free improv and eai). A genuine collectors' item - and this may be the only chance to get hold of a copy at all (the CDR has been OOP for years now!).
