Guest Chaney Posted March 21, 2005 Report Posted March 21, 2005 12 discs is probably more live V5 than I need right about now. Not a bad price, considering the size of the set, but this one seems like it is for completists only. Agree. Quote
jon abbey Posted March 21, 2005 Report Posted March 21, 2005 I've been listening to more and more of Lasse's work recently. He seems to have quite a range. Was the set you saw improvised? probably, yeah, since Pita arrived in the US just a few hours before, and they never played together before. It might be interesting to hear another all-laptop disc on Erst. I would suggest Marhaug / Drumm, but they have already collaborated and you don't do pre-existing pairings, do you? not usually, but I don't have any hard and fast rule against it. but I wasn't too blown away by their first disc together, and I don't think Kevin will be doing any more collaborative discs for a while, if ever. I'm going to hopefully do a duo of Pita and someone, maybe Lasse, we'll see... Quote
John B Posted March 21, 2005 Report Posted March 21, 2005 (edited) I would love it if Kevin would just release some new material in editions greater than 11, or however many copies of Impish Tyrant were released. I missed out on Horror of Birth, too. Pita / Marhuag would be interesting. It strikes me as more of a Mego than an Erstwhile session, but I'd love to hear the results either way. RDK Posted March 22, 2005 Report Posted March 22, 2005 don't know many naysayers when it comes to O'Neal's Porch Well, I'll step up and admit to not really caring for it. It was my first exposure to William Parker and I bought it based in large part on it being recommended here and on the ol' BN board - but it just didn't click for me. And it's not that I don't like Parker - in fact, I just finished listening to Peach Orchard and I really dig his latest trio CD whose title escapes me now... Quote
John B Posted March 23, 2005 Report Posted March 23, 2005 I enjoy O'Neal's Porch quite a bit but I never thought it lived up to the extreme hype it got when it was released / reviewed by the New York Times, etc. Quote

Reminds me a bit of Raphe Malik's ConSequences. Good music to play while driving. Quote

Guest Chaney Posted March 24, 2005 Report Posted March 24, 2005 (edited) jokebux.klingt.org Gonna do some listening this weekend. Have you listened to any of those? A couple of the shorter pieces. Nothing really jumped out at me screaming HOLY CRAP! LISTEN TO THIS! but I'll have a better listen this weekend. Actually, as they can be downloaded, I may download the bunch, burn 'em to cheap CDs and listen on my stereo, rather than sitting in front of my computer doing the streaming audio thing. ON THE EDIT: Later that night... klaus filip / taku unami: at dornerplatz 0:14:05 I'm listening to some of the other pieces and I like what I'm hearing. AND ON THE FOLLOWING DAY... boris hauf (sax), lukas knoefler (drums), achim tang (bass): slow ball 0:06:14 ruth weiss(voice), boris hauf(sax), lulkas knoefler(drums), achim tang(bass): white is all colours 0:12:06 ruth weiss(voice),boris hauf(sax), lukas knoefler(drums),achim tang(drums): light works 0:20:20 ~~~~~~~~~~ R O S S B I N ~~~~~~~~~~ Edited March 25, 2005 by Chaney Quote

I have one, and it's excellent: Riding the eai wave, listened to nperign / Günter Müller release "More Gloom, More Light" (on Rossbin Records). Good stuff. nperign is Greg kelley on trumpet and Bhob Riney on saxophones; Müller handles percussion and electronics. nperign guys mostly create breathing/clicking sounds of various level of unglyness, and Müller mostly plays with drone sounds. Might sound like something not particularly exciting, but you do get drawn in since it all has amazing focus -everything is where itis supposed to be when it is supposed to be, and in the light of my recent interest in pure sound, I find the whole listening very rewarding. Nate Dorward Posted March 26, 2005 Report Posted March 26, 2005 The Assumed Possibilities disc on Rossbin is worth checking out too. & the Manuel Mota solo disc. I don't think I've heard any of the others. Quote

I like all three of those, the two with Japanese musicians the most (the Kahn/Kawasaki is a trio with Tetuzi Akiyama). the nmperign/Muller recording would have been better if they'd waited a bit, that was their first meeting (and it's not all trio, there's a duo nmperign and a solo Gunter track on there), and their second, at AMPLIFY 2003, I thought was decidedly better. but it's still a fine CD. Nate, Manuel Mota's playing here tomorrow night, with Margarida Garcia, Barry Weisblat, Toshio Kajiwara and Tim Barnes, I'm planning on being there... Quote

John B Posted March 27, 2005 Report Posted March 27, 2005 (edited) I was doing a search over on JC and saw that at least three people "intensely disliked" Jason Kahn -- Songs For Nicholas Ross on Rossbin. I will definitely be avoiding that one. Thanks for the link Chaney! I remember some live Braxton and Sonny Simmons releases before Parallactic disappeared. It would be nice if that material was made available again somehow. Edited March 27, 2005 by John B Quote
jasonguthartz Posted March 27, 2005 Report Posted March 27, 2005 Isn't Parallactic the label Anthony Braxton started? ... It would be nice if that material was made available again somehow. No, that was Braxton House. I believe Brandon Evans ran/runs Parallactic. The Parallactic titles are available here: http://www.injazz.net Quote

Д.Д. Posted March 27, 2005 Report Posted March 27, 2005 From the Gerry Hemingway website: "April 15th, 2005 is the street date for the release of a new quartet cd called The Whimbler which will be coming out on Clean Feed Records of Portugal". I saw this quartet live and was not too impressed - but if you like the previous Hemingway Cleen Feed release ("Devils's Paradise"), you might enjoy this one as well - same well-writted, slighly funky post-bop tunes, same safe in-the-pocket playing... I am more intrigued by this one (upcoming on between-the-lines): Hemingway: "Wolter Wierbos came as the only carry over from the original quintet, Frank Gratkowski ably took over the reed chair, Amit Sen, who I had met through the Swedish project played cello, and Kermit Driscoll joined as bassist (el and ac)". I am interested to hear Gratkowski playing somebody else's material. Quote
Д.Д. Posted March 27, 2005 Report Posted March 27, 2005 From Marco Eneidi website: "Mar. 19th, 2005 Ayler Records and Annan Muusic presents trio with Paul Lovens and Peter Janson at the Museum of Modern Art in Norrkoping, Sweden". As Ayler Records are involved, hopefully this one got recorded and will be released one day - looks like a kick-ass combo! Quote

Listened to it once but became upset as track five has some very serious sonic problems. I'm guessing your copy is problem free? I'll have to see f I can get another copy... but Drimala is now out of this one and I'm doubtful that Sachimay would be interested in replacing my $5 copy. I'll have another listen and post an opinion. Quote
