Д.Д.
I'm thinking I need more fiber between my ears. Any thoughts on Ray Russell from his obscured early 70s work, particularly Live at ICA, 1971? Thanks, Dan I have the disc you are referring to, but don't remember it too well - will listen to it this weekend and will post my thoughts here. Guest Chaney
I'm thinking I need more fiber between my ears. Any thoughts on Ray Russell from his obscured early 70s work, particularly Live at ICA, 1971? Thanks, Dan As I didn't have a clue as to Ray Russell, ... Biography by Bruce Eder Guitarist Ray Russell may be the most successful member of the final line-up of the John Barry Seven, having gone on to a serious and highly regarded career in jazz and rock in England over the ensuing decades. Russell's introduction to the John Barry Seven came when he read in the music press that the group's longtime lead guitarist, Vic Flick, was leaving the group — he auditioned on a day off his regular job and won the spot by pretending that he could read music, and learned musical notation as a member of the band, after establishing his virtuosity. The corpulent, stockily built Russell (who resembled Roy Kinnear or Robbie Coltrane) was an improbable looking guitar hero, but his talent was incontestable. He made a good successor to Flick and stayed with the band to the end, in early 1965. He next played with Georgie Fame & The Blue Flames, and by the end of the 1960's he was working in tandem with Chris Spedding in the Mike Gibbs band, alongside bassist Jack Bruce and reedman Alan Skidmore. During the 1970's, Russell passed through such ensembles as the Rock Workshop and the free-jazz combo Nucleus, and co-founded Chopyn (featuring Simon Philips on drums) with keyboard player Ann Odell. He also played with Roxy Music's Andy McKay on the soundtrack of the British television series Rock Follies, and became a member of Stackridge for a time. Russell was also the guitarist for the group Smith & D'Abo, and played a role in the benefit performances known as "The Secret Policeman's Ball," alongside Eric Clapton, Neil Innes et al. As a member of the fusion group The British Orchestra in the early 1980's, he played and recorded the music of Gil Evans, and he also made his West End debut playing in the musical Time, starring Cliff Richard, in 1986. Russell later formed his own group, the Ray Russell Band. He was a regular participant at the Montreaux Jazz Festival throughout the 1980's and 1990's working in various group contexts, and has also played with the Simon Philips Band. Although Russell is best known for his abilities as a jazz player, he has worked successfully across a vast range of musical idioms, including r&b and soul, and heavy metal. Guest Chaney
I believe Caffeine has been sold out / oop for ages. Live at the Velvet Lounge: Fred Anderson Trio w/ Kowald / Drake Recommended?
John B
I believe Caffeine has been sold out / oop for ages. Live at the Velvet Lounge: Fred Anderson Trio w/ Kowald / Drake Recommended? The Chicago Tentet / Octet set has been oop for a few years now, too. Live at the Velvet Lounge is fantastic, imo. Very highly recommended. I have never heard Birdhouse, and will have to track down a copy now. Off topic, but I really recommend all of you grab a copy of Larry Kart's Book Jazz in Search of Itself. I recently bought a copy and have been very impressed by how readable and interesting the book is, even when discussing musicians I really do not care for. One of the best Jazz books (or any music, for that matter) that I have read in a long time. Edited March 17, 2005 by John B
John B
another disc to recommend to my Funny Rat friends: Tony Oxley The B.I.M.P Quartet - Floating Phantoms (a/l/l) Tony Oxley - percussion, Phil Wachsmann - violin / electronics, Pat Thomas - piano / keyboards / electronics, Matt Wand - sampling Remniscent of AMM, but far more indebted to european free improvisation. I'd be curious to read Jon Abbey's thoughts on this one (I just bought this from him as part of his cd purge) as it has many sounds that evoke Keith Rowe, AMM, MIMEO / John Tilbury's The Hands of Caravaggio, while still keeping it's feet firmly planted in the FMP / Emanem "scene." On first listen I'm not sure every piece is completely succesful, but I found enough of interest to keep me coming back for more listens. I also think this disc might make for a good "get your feet wet" album for someone interested in eai who is coming from a jazz background and isn't ready for pure sinewaves quite yet. Martin
Д.Д., it would be great if you let me know if/how Anatoly Vapirov will replace the defective AVA CDR you got... I am presently in the process of working out a deal with Anatoly in order to buy some of his self-released stuff. His CD prices are ok for me, but then there are bank charges (€16.50) and customs duties/VAT (about €25.00 when/if ordering seven discs)... jon abbey
I'd be curious to read Jon Abbey's thoughts on this one (I just bought this from him as part of his cd purge) I don't really have many thoughts on it, I bought it when it came out (coincidentally partly because of Martin's rave about it), and really disliked it, I probably only even played it once, maybe twice. I didn't hear those connections you mention, but I'm really not a fan of Wand or Thomas improvising electronics (I thought Lunge live were pretty pointless, not crazy about the records either). I found this group of musicians somewhat interesting maybe ten years ago when they were initially experimenting with electronics (not Oxley, the others), but they're not my thing anymore. glad you're enjoying it, though, John! Jon, thanks for the feedback. The use of electronics is a lot rougher than in AMM, that is for sure. I do think that a lot of people here would see some connection to what AMM were doing prior to Rowe leaving, if only due to lack of experience with the genre. Nate Dorward
Yeah, never really quite warmed to the Oxley/BIMP disc. I used to like the Tony Oxley Quartet disc on Incus quite a bit, which is the same group with Derek Bailey (on distorted electric guitar throughout) rather than Wachsmann. It's not exactly a subtle disc--basically Pat Thomas & Matt Wand spend a lot of time triggering ludicrous sound effects, barrages of drum machine racket & smarmy BBC voices--but somehow it works. John B
I just noticed on the Aum Fidelity site that William Parker has a new album, Sound Unity, coming up featuring the same lineup as O'Neals Porch. I know he has many naysayers here but I will be picking this one up soon after it is released.
Steve Reynolds
don't know many naysayers when it comes to O'Neal's Porch will be looking to find a way to get this one - if it is anywhere near as great as the previous recording, watch out..... Д.Д.
there are bank charges (€16.50) and customs duties/VAT (about €25.00 when/if ordering seven discs)... Insane. Have you considered sending a money order? Are you sure you need it to be sent by a "certified" carrier insured (so that you don't only pay a lot for the shipping, but also the import duties)? - regular post in Bulgaria should be OK. John B
Dennis Gonzalez just announced that Nile River Suite, his disc w/ Henry Grimes (his first "post-comeback" recording), Sabir Mateen, Roy Campbell Jr and Mike Thompson has been repressed. It went out of print pretty quickly, and is a very good album. He also has a new disc coming out on Clean Feed Records this month. Idle Wild features Oliver Lake on soprano and alto as well as Ken Filiano and Mike Thompson.

jon abbey
Paal Nilssen-Love/Lasse Marhaug "Personal Hygiene" [uR-005] Edition of 75. Drums and electronics. I saw an extremely impressive duo set of Pita and Lasse Marhaug last night between 2-3 AM in the No Fun Festival in Red Hook (Brooklyn). massively loud, my ears are just returning to normal now, nine hours later. my wife said she thinks it was louder than the Merzbow show she saw in Tokyo a few years ago. I've been listening to more and more of Lasse's work recently. He seems to have quite a range. Was the set you saw improvised? It might be interesting to hear another all-laptop disc on Erst. I would suggest Marhaug / Drumm, but they have already collaborated and you don't do pre-existing pairings, do you? John B
Matt Lavelle "Making Eye Contact With God" [uR-007] Edition of 50. New York-based trio of trumpet, bass and drums. Includes Matt Heyner and Ryan Sawyer. Heyner is the bass player for No Neck Blues Band and Test, correct? I'm not familiar with the other two musicians on this one. These all look interesting. I'll grab the Marhaug discs, maybe one or two of the others as well.

John B
12 discs is probably more live V5 than I need right about now. Not a bad price, considering the size of the set, but this one seems like it is for completists only.
