Out of the blue, here's picture taken (by my girlfriend) at the Sonore gig on the 17th of Februrary. Was a good enough concert, some amazing moments let down by others that were either somewhat predictable or didn't really click. Still was very much worth the trouble (had to stay over in Paris as it ended rather late). Whether they are comfortable or would agree with this assertion or not, each seems to occupy a certain territory/role and work from there, if anything, Ken's the most flexible in this setting (although he mostly sticks to riffing and takes the lead rather infrequently).

Oh, they didn't speak a word until the end (before the short blues encore). Brotzmann played taragato, alto, and tenor; Mats stuck to the flutephone and baritone, and Ken played - let's see, tenor and clarinet and I think that was about it.

Have some more pictures I would like to and will post soon.

You betcha! Gonna do a 3-hour drive to see the man.

And we have Herr Brötzmann himself (in quartet with Herr McPhee) coming some time in April as well!

Chaney - thank you, I'm sure she'll appreciate it. Looking at some of my pictures, it turns out that Vandermark played the baritone saxophone too.

Of the pictures she took, two more came out nicely, if you've never seen him play, I think these do give a good sense of how Mats moves to the music ^_^

Here's the first,

Looks like Meniscus label has folded down - their website is not accessible anymore. I think Nate also implied some time ago that Meniscus is no longer.

Well, Jon Morgan resurfaced briefly to issue the Sealed Knot & Le Quan Ninh discs (belatedly--both were in the can for some time); he promised to issue at least one or two other discs but seems to have gone quiet again.

One of those pending Meniscus CDs was a duo disc by Georg Gräwe and Martin Blume. Too bad if this one should remain unreleased.

I am looking through the booklets of Meniscus CDs I have, and looks like Oluyemi Thomas / Lisle Ellis duo was also planned at some point. This one I would be very curious to hear (I was very impressed by Oluyemi Thomas duo with Alan Silva on Eremite - John B and I were raving about it some time ago).

Welcome to The Rat, Martin!

Nice photos Gokhan!

And yes, Herr Brötzelmeister will play Zurich on April 17, day before the king's birthday. Nice to know Gebbia will be here on 12th, thanks, I didn't know that!

Didn't get "Zen Window" so far, but hey, it's Gebbia, who, if nothing else, did a record we (well, not everybody agrees, but that's not the point anyway) rate as "da shit", which is no small achievement ;)

Anyone familiar with the group Scheer and their release, ... and finally (482 Music)?

scheer-and-finally.jpg

I find myself going back to the TOWER site listening to the sound samples again and again. Might be considered retro but that's one wicked guitar and Ms. Gallagher sounds suitably sweet and, when appropriate, sinisterly sultry. (I'm sure there's one word for sinisterly sultry but as it's getting late...)

Anyone?

Gokhan--no rush! Thanks for thinking of me.

What happened to BFT24 anyway? I thought I wrote a note to say I was in but am not sure I'm actually on the list.....

Anyway, Meniscus/Jon Morgan had a habit of promising discs then sitting on them & then not issuing them or else simply taking so long the musicians gave up & issued the music themselves--an example is Axis of Cavity by Simon Fell's trio, which ended up a CDR release on Bruce's Fingers. It was listed in at least one liner note to a Meniscus release as forthcoming. -- The other promised Meniscus release is one with Dan Warburton & I forget who else.

I like Jon Morgan--he was actually incredibly nice, when I arranged to review the Le Quan Ninh & Sealed Knot discs he actually tossed the entire Meniscus catalogue in the mail in addition (saying that if I could afford to pay for some of it then that'd be nice, otherwise not to worry). & they've released some fine discs (the Greg Kelley, LQN, & the Butcher/v.d.Schyff for instance. But it's still hard not to find the label's long periods of hibernation frustrating, & I know that the musicians whose recordings get locked up for years in this confusion often feel frustrated too.

Been listening to Cecil TAylor lately, mostly trying to get my head around The Willisau Concert, which I find hard to fathom really.

to be fair, I believe Jon's record store burned down at one point during that hiatus, which tends to put a crimp in one's plans.

running an improvised music label is a very good way to lose money; anyone who does it for any length of time should be commended, not chastised for having to stop. and while I obviously feel for the musicians whose projects were on hold, and I know that Jon wasn't always so responsive to them, they certainly could have taken them elsewhere, it wasn't like other labels were lining up to release them.

anyway, I know you guys all pretty much know this already, just felt like putting my two cents in...

Just received a press-release from Leo. 8 new releases - all look very interesting. I would particualrly note the Steve Lacy - Joelle Leandre duo "One More Time" (!), recorded just before Lacy left Europe for the US in 2002.

The press release mentions that Lacy perfomed 10 duo concerts with different musicians - hopefully more Lacy duos will be released.

Wow! Lacy and Leandre. Sounds tasty.

What were the other seven new releases?

Don't remember all now - threw the press-release away. There is (you favorite) Lauren Newton with (my favorite) Vladimir Tarasov, Braxton at Yoshi Vol. III, two discs of trio with Mat Maneri (forgot who was there in the trio), Enrico Fazzio band, Schlippenbach/Takase duo (didn't know they are husband and wife) plus some electronics guy (this one is actually very instriguing)... the other two I forgot. Leo website will be updated in a week or so anyway.

Thanks David.

Have you succumbed to the Leo download option yet?

I downloaded just the OOP "Document" set, and the parts of it that I've heard yet are excllent (and the sound quality is very decent). I would recommend you listen to the Godlen Years of the Soviet New Jazz Vol. I-IV, and if you like what you hear, go for the Document - the personnel is the same to a large extent.

Other than that, I'll forego the downloads and will go for the real stuff - after all, I spent hours of my valuable leaure time assembling these CD racks not for nothing.

Leo website announces: Earn free downloads and free CDs

Just bought a 40Gb mp3 player for my mother (IRiver 340, if anybody's interested) and loading some of my CDs for her. A bit confusd about what I should chose...

Last time I was home, I decided I'd scare here a little a bit and put her "Spiritual Unity"... well, she liked it a lot. Morever she insisted on getting an MP3 player herself (thus, the present). Then I put her some Polweschel, and she enjoyed it as well. Same with Brötzmann's "Nefertiti" and Coltrane's "Meditations". I will try to ease her way into some hardbop BN stuff (via Evan Parker, I guess), but I doubt she'll gain too much appreciation for that.

That's pretty amazing that you mother would like that stuff.

I received the Revenant Ayler box on a Wednesday, and as I visit my mother on Wednesdays, after work, I gave in to temptation and played a bit of Ayler at her house.

She was not amused.

We actualy seem to have surprisingly similar tastes. My mother has some very vivid imagination, and her comments on the music were both insightful (I have no idea how she did it, but she was fairly accurate in predicting how Polweschel music would build up) and hilarious. Have to run to catch my plain now (will listen to ubu's BFT on the 5-hour light), but will post some of her comments later.

Enjoy the listen! There are a few tracks that are down your/our (ratty) alley, but most of it is just beautiful music (at least that's what I think it is...)

And :tup on your mother!

Have you tried Soegard? Maybe she instinctively catches those weirdo structures (Krebs etc)? ;)
