John B Posted May 26, 2004 Report Share Posted May 26, 2004 I finally own a copy of Funny Rat. It took 106 pages and a drive to Boston, but I can finally hear the album that started all of this. I also picked up a copy of Nothung, which was recorded live at the Knitting Factory and features Brotzmann with William Parker and Michael Wertmuller (who I know nothing about) on percussion. Nothung is SINOW, but Wertmueller is amazing. You do know Wertmueller, btw - he is a Steamboat Switzerland drummer... I hadn't realized he was in Steamboat. Sounds like a winner. The chemistry between Brotzmann and McPhee is amazing and nicely understated and varied playing from Zerang and Kessler. Idiot that I am, I could have seen this pairing a short time ago but decided not to. Oh! Did I mention that Hamid Drake was also to be on hand? OK guys, I've listened to this one again: Günter Müller & Lê Quan Ninh - La Voyelle Liquide - Erstwhile and I don't like it. What's so good or special about it, or is it just a feeling that's hard to explain? You seem to like it all very much. I've only heard this one twice. I'll have another listen -- the always revealing THIRD listen -- within the next couple days and post some babble. It is not particularly Avantgarde though. Fritz Hauser's Solodrumming is nice, although slightly maddening (it's mtronome sort of drumming). I remember there is also another excelent disc for percussion enemble. Then there is some pretty James Tenney stuff (I think for violin and piano). A GREAT record! Can't say enough good things about that one! Everybody's at the top of their game. And dig "Struttin' With Some Barbecue" - that version still could teach Wynton some lessons! ubu And I remember the liner notes saying they recorded more stuff during this session (including Hancock's "Maiden Voyage")... I have a lot of trouble explaining what it is about music such as La Voyelle Liquide that I enjoy so much. It has something to do with mood and atmosphere, something to do with variety within a limited palette of sounds, perhaps something to do with the novelty of the sounds and music created - it is radically different from any other music in my collection and, when in the right mood, I really love listening to this. It is definitely not for everybody and is probably not to most people's tastes, which is fine. I'd advise holding onto the disc for a few months or so and coming back to it. I had a lot of trouble with my first eai disc, The Hands of Caravaggio, but, eventually, everything started to click. Conversely, this music may just not be for you, in which case wait until it if "officially" oop and get the best deal you can for it on ebay. I am just on a 2nd track, but it is already evident - this is powerful stuff. Cosmosamatics here are: Sonny Simmons on alto, Michael Marcus on baritone and (insane) saxello, Tarus Mateen on bass guitar (!) Andrew Cyrille Great, great stuff (persuasive enough, no?).
