Minidisc to CDR this morning

well done. edirol ?

No, nothing at all! I figured out another way, with some help of a friend, no equipment needed, and sounding just as good as the MD sounds!

That Edirol thing would be economically prized here, I'm afraid!

Xavier Garcia - Gianni Gebbia - Nils Wogram

pronto!

Gianni Gebbia: Alto and Soprano Saxophones

Nils Wogram: Trombone

Xavier Garcia: Sampler

Cover Art: Gianni Gebia

Cover Graphic: Dominik Süess

Liner Notes: Bert Noglik

Recorded February 2001 at Miamo Studio, Palermo, Italy, by Natale Lopes.

Published 2002 by Intakt Records

Intakt CD 076

Gianni Gebbia, Xavier Garcia und Nils Wogram:

Three who met on the outermost, southernmost tip of Europe have shaped

their music into an exciting event, a challenge and a feast for the senses.

Gianni Gebbia is at home at the place everything happened,

in Sicily's capitol Palermo, and has revitalized a scene of improvised music there.

He has made a name for himself by playing with many of the internationally-known outstanding musicians of this genre, has played solo concerts, and is active

as a promoter. Nils Wogram, who has long arrived in the scene and still can be

considered young, has distinguished him-self with his own ensembles and

compositions, and feels connected in many ways to the musical culture of Cologne, Germany. And Xavier Garcia comes from a stronghold of avant-garde music,

inspired by jazz, in France: from the circle of musical association, ARFI,

settled in Lyon: Association à la Recherche d'un Folklore Imaginaire.

He plays with ARFI groups, composes and produces works of electronic music

and has thereby created his own individual style in his dealing with live electronics.

In this trio, musical explosiveness results from the continually changing

different mixtures of known and completely new sounds.

The associations reach from songs, hymns and chorales to Bebop and Cool Jazz,

from Babylonian confusion of voices to soundtracks for imaginary films,

from Mediterranean melodies to Albert Ayler, from string ensembles

to Indian sitar sounds, from the history of the trombone in Jazz to electronic music.

In the course of the pieces, in varying shapes, it becomes clearer and clearer

what can be heard and what needs no further reference to anything else:

the identity of a trio.

Bert Noglik, Liner Notes

Is anyone familiar with this? Wogram is quite an astonishing musician, too. Should be very very interesting, if not very very good!

Okay, back to bussiness.

I just got the records from JON JANG & FRANCIS WONG.

JON JANG: TWO FLAWERS ON A STEM (SOUL NOTE)

FRANCIS WONG: PILGRIMAGE (MUSIC & ARTS)

Not very recent (respectively from 95 & 97) but so far so good.

He-he, Pilgrimage is not particularly good.

It sucks, to use the language of our generation.

The one to get is Great Wall (also with Jon Jang).

It is cool, as we young people say.

Yeah? PILGRIMAGE is not good?

And why that? I find him to my taste.

Your young ears have still to travell a long way.

And, with time, you will finely discover than that record doesn't "suck", to use the language of your, oh so young, generation.

And please don't get sacarstic with this old ears.

They are still working a bit.

By the way, have you or have you not get somme GOOD HIFI material?

I really like to know.

Well, I can't find anything good in this country! So I guess I'll have to go to France or US (even including the ticket, it might be cheaper than buying here!) to look for a good HiFi. However, the main point on my agenda now is to get a proper storage for my CDs - and I can't find anything appropriate in Switzerland - so I have to order CD racks with menuisier! Insane.

Currently I have a ... hmm... "compromise" HiFi variant - Denon CD player and amplifier and Sony speakers. CDs sounds better than original music, he-he.

P.L.M., I remember you talking about Hans Koch elsewhere - care to share your thoughts? Isn't the man the the dashittiest bass clarinet player today?

And I am sure you have a lot of Barry Guy - so don't be shy, give us some recommendations.

I don't know about you folks but I'm about ready to pull the plug on any future purchases from The Music Resource. Let them be more truthful as to available inventory and delivery times and then I'll re-open my wallet.

This shit's for the birds.

I have realistinc expectations to begin with, so I am not too upset about the avialbility and delivery time. There is still some stuff at themusicresource that I couldn't have gotten elsewhere at such a price (or at any price).

And keep in mind, that each of our unsecussful orders makes their database more accurate ;)

Effectively, I bought a duo between HANS KOCH (bass cl, soprano sax) & BERTRAND DENZLER (tenor sax) called ASYMETRIES, on the label ACTUELLE from QUEBEC (www.actuelledcd.com).

Interesting noisy records (sound like could sound a DONEDA/ FUCHS encounter.)

For the "dashittiest" (what that mean?) bass clarinet player I don't know.

I continued to prefered RUDI MAHALL (the most "dolphiesque" clarinette player today, for sure) and my man the mighty unknow (he plays with the LONDON IMPROVISER ORCHESTRA at every FREEDOM OF THE CITY meeting since 2001 nevertheless) JACQUES FOSCHIA.

Well, BARRY GUY is a big fish with a HUGE disco.

I don't like throw titles without some explanations and I don't have too much time to spend on that for the moment.

I try to bring you some (ahem) ligth this weekend, if I can.

schiano_waiting_alp235-250.jpg

Mario Schiano:  On The Waiting-List

Atavistic Unheard Music Series (UMS235CD)

Mario Schiano's 1973 nonet opus, originally released on King Records! Schiano is one of the founding figures of free music in Italy, an intense and often uproariously funny alto saxophonist, bandleader and high-conceptualist who has been spreading his own postmodern eclecticism since the early '60s. Later in that decade, Schiano co-founded Gruppo Romano Free Jazz, and he's been the Godfather of free music in Italy ever since.

Recorded in Rome in 1973, On The Waiting-List is one of the rarest items in Schiano's extensive - and by-and-large impossible to find- discography. Originally released on the King Universal label, from Naples, and produced by Toni Cosenza, it is virtually unknown outside of its homeland (mighty obscure there, too...). An outstanding creative jazz outing, the record features Schiano on alto as well as organ and voice (on the extra-outre track "All It Takes"), with other luminaries of the Italian jazz scene, including bassist Bruno Tommaso and trombonist Giancarlo Schiaffini, the other two co-founders of Gruppo Romano Free Jazz. If you can conjure an “Art Ensemble of Italy” in your mind's ear, this is what it might sound like: straightahead tunes are twisted into unexpected shapes like a balloon artist in the park, a bossa-nova goes awry, sweet songs are given sinister solos.

On The Waiting-List comes packaged with the original, outlandish B&W photo of don Schiano. Fear not, jazz fans: the waiting is over.
