Free For All
Just picked this up. I like it. What do you guys think? Edited March 19, 2009 by Free For All
CJ Shearn
my copy should be in the mail today, however the album has Vinnie Colaiuta, not Blade. I'm digging the new RTF album personally.
PHILLYQ
Mine just arrived in the mail today and I have Friday off, so I'll spin it then and report back. The last two discs of McLaughlin under his name were both stinkers, so I'm hoping he'll do better in a band that's not HIS band.
7/4
I'm curious. I didn't like McLaughlins last few albums either. dB
Free For All
the album has Vinnie Colaiuta, not Blade. I fixed the thread title, pardon my error.
CJ Shearn
I got mine from Abstract Logix. I thought the album otherwise is only available at their US tour until the summer when it gets wide release. What I've heard so far as a cursory listen, it's great though I'm still really digging the new RTF album a lot. Kenny Garrett's playing on the FPB record already shatters most of what's on "Sketches of MD", which after seeing Maceo Parker live tonight, I can take for what it is, a good funky record. JETman
Just picked this up. I like it. What do you guys think? More hype than substance. Overall, it's ok, with disc 2 being much better than disc 1. The problem for me is that the music does not have any "sustained heat". That and the fact that I'm not crazy about McBride's electric bass playing. FWIW, I believe that the Return to Forever reunion is a much better listen. Oh well. Corea is still a standout musician, but, and I hate to say this, McLaughlin may be on a steep downward spiral, especially considering his last few solo releases. Joe G
I hate to say this, McLaughlin may be on a steep downward spiral, especially considering his last few solo releases. I certainly hope not, but it's true that the last thing he did which REALLY grabbed me was his performance of The Wish, from the live Remember Shakti album which came out about 10-11 years ago. Sublime, IMO. That said, I have not heard the last two albums he's put out.

Thanks for this, they are playing in the bay area and it looked like it was too good to be true but on the other hand it also feels like a money project. I haven't heard it but I think I will pass on the live show as McLaughlin hasn't been his self in recent years and for what ever reason McBride's electric bass playing disappoints. Mostly due to how much I love his acoustic stand up bass playing.
CJ Shearn
I really like this new project and love the new RTF disc. I've found this really out phrase Chick plays on "Hymn to Andromeda" to be incredibly funny, b/c you just hear Christian just say in his deep Barry White baritone "yeah Chick!". I dunno Jetman, I hear plenty of heat in this music, and Kenny Garrett really delivers with his playing, even moreso than "Sketches of MD", and I haven't been that interested in McLaughlin's last two hearing soundclips but I like his intensity here Edited March 20, 2009 by CJ Shearn

Johnny Mac almost seems afraid to take any long gut-wrenching solos. As far as Kenny Garrett goes, I think we all know that he can play. It's what he currently chooses to play that we take exception to. However I don't think he's played as well as he did in the mid 90s when he made that album with Metheny. As a matter of fact, I saw them together with Nat Reeves and Brian Blade, and Kenny just blew the roof off the place. Sorry, but I don't hear that in this recording. FWIW, my favorite track on the Five Peace Band release is "In a Silent Way/It's About That Time" with Herbie guesting. It figures that Chick and John would find their "common ground" on a Miles track.
CJ Shearn
that's cool we all do hear different things and have varying tastes so its understandable why you may not dig this one. I have a live show of the Garrett/Metheny/Reeves/Blade quartet that its just too bad Warner never actually released an album of because the show is killing. Well I'm gonna play the FPB album again :-D
PHILLYQ
I was able to give it a spin and so far I like it. 'In a Silent Way' was very good, lotsa fire there.
CJ Shearn
I love how Herbie and Chick play off the rhythm section, and how Herbie does his usual thing setting up rhythmic motifs to engage the bass and drums.
captainwrong
I need to give it another spin, but I'm not feeling it. I don't know if this would make a difference, but I'd rather have heard Blade than Vinnie.
JETman
A little time and air have completely changed my mind on this recording. I'm currently diggin' the hell out of it!!!
CJ Shearn
cool. I need to go back to it myself, been listening to the new DeJohnette album. I think FPB is rough, passionately played music. I also think because of the principles, people expect somewhere between Elektric Band/RTF/Mahavishnu, and that might be dissapointing to some people. But when you've got arguably two of the best, most consummate musicians in the same band......well, you can't help but expect virtual greatness. I will say that Corea has had somewhat of a resurgence in the last 5 years or so, and is on fire and at the top of his game.
