greggery peccary Posted March 4, 2009 Report Posted March 4, 2009 This doesn't happen often, but the Golson/Farmer set has bypassed running low and gone to last chance. Great set indeed. Get it while you can! Quote
Free For All Posted March 4, 2009 Report Posted March 4, 2009 Strong recommendation for this one, don't miss it if you can afford to drop the coin. Some really great music IMO. Quote
Cliff Englewood Posted March 4, 2009 Report Posted March 4, 2009 Ditto to what is said above about this Set, strange that it has gone straight to "Last Chance" though, no e-mail warning, nothing... Quote
Cliff Englewood Posted March 4, 2009 Report Posted March 4, 2009 (edited) Actually 3 sets that are in the 220s are now about to go, #224, #225 and #228... Edited March 4, 2009 by Cliff Englewood Quote
Quincy Posted March 4, 2009 Report Posted March 4, 2009 Wowee! I've strayed from the "save it for running low" strategy for a couple of years now so luckily I already have this one. Yup, great music and excellent sound quality. Quote
Tom 1960 Posted March 4, 2009 Report Posted March 4, 2009 I was never a big fan of Art Farmer until I heard this set. Great collection. If you've got some extra cash lying around, grab it. Quote
tranemonk Posted March 4, 2009 Report Posted March 4, 2009 it really is a good set... I feel bad for those of you who waited and now have to make that painful decision.... <_< Quote
Shawn Posted March 4, 2009 Report Posted March 4, 2009 Personally, I think this is some of the most satisfying and consistently excellent straight-ahead jazz from this era. The arrangements are always top notch and that's quite a talent roster! Check out the discography page. Quote
BeBop Posted March 5, 2009 Report Posted March 5, 2009 Wonderful set. Grab it while you can! Uh huh. Quote
relyles Posted March 5, 2009 Report Posted March 5, 2009 In these tough economic times I really can't afford it, but why the heck would I let that stop me? I just ordered it. Quote
Free For All Posted March 5, 2009 Report Posted March 5, 2009 guys Many musical treats coming your way. Quote
DukeCity Posted March 5, 2009 Report Posted March 5, 2009 Just caved to the pressure. Hell, they even take PayPal! Looking forward to diving into these! Quote
king ubu Posted March 5, 2009 Report Posted March 5, 2009 boy am I happy that i got this already! It contains a lot of outstanding music, both by the Jazztet (some funky stuff on the Mercury albums, wonderful wonderful John Lewis arrangements on "The Jazztet Plays John Lewis") as well as by Farmer and Golson individually - those quartet albums are a treat! That opening track on one of the Golsons in 5/4 is amazing, it grooves like mad! The orchestra album by Farmer is nice as well (it was a Verve Elite before, as was one of the Mercury Jazztet albums), and the "Take a Number from 1 to 10" album by Golson has some fantastic tenor playing on it... a winner from beginning to end! And I guess one of the more varied Mosaics, too. Quote
David Ayers Posted March 5, 2009 Report Posted March 5, 2009 (edited) Mine's the euro-mosaic. I wonder if these short notice last chance situations occur because though a license might have some time to run the stock is low and the economics of re-pressing don't work, so a decision is taken to pull the plug. Either that or like the the famous Vee-Jay sets nobody notices the contract is expiring until the last minute! I notice that a few Mosaic sets are awaiting re-pressing so they may be tightening up to balance the books in thee hard times. Edited March 5, 2009 by David Ayers Quote

king ubu Posted March 5, 2009 Report Posted March 5, 2009 What, correct that no one notices, or correct that they see it's a slow seller, they have ten left, they decide not to print more? The Stuff Smith disappeared like that as well, with no notice at all. My Jazztet is also the european version - otherwise I wouldn't have it yet (I went for a good offer somewhere, I think, or even found it locally). Quote
jazztrain Posted March 5, 2009 Report Posted March 5, 2009 (edited) I thought that there were some licensing issues that came up unexpectedly on the Stuff Smith set that caused it to be withdrawn suddenly. J.A.W. Posted March 5, 2009 Report Posted March 5, 2009 Correct, there were problems in that department. mikelz777 Posted March 5, 2009 Report Posted March 5, 2009 Count me among those who would recommend this set. If I had to rank all of my big box sets from Mosaic, this one would definitely be in the top half of the stack. I got one of the Universal sets at a price I couldn't pass up and I'm glad I did. Quote
B. Goren. Posted March 5, 2009 Report Posted March 5, 2009 (edited) I've always thought that the Jazztet was one of the best small groups ever, especially when Curtis Fuller played with Farmer & Golson. Edited March 5, 2009 by B. Goren. Quote
greggery peccary Posted March 5, 2009 Author Report Posted March 5, 2009 What are the "European" sets that are being mentioned. Mine came straight from Mosaic, so I assume it is an "American" set. Are these Euro sets ones that are packaged and sealed for sale at record shops in Europe? I recall seeing a bunch of Mosaics, some recently out of print, at the FNAC the last time we were in Spain. Quote
sal Posted March 5, 2009 Report Posted March 5, 2009 How funny....I've been listening to this set for the last hour, and just came across this thread. Get it while you can. I'd say its my favorite Mosaic box that I own. Quote
