clifford_thornton Posted March 2, 2009 Report Posted March 2, 2009 Happy Birthday to Buell and hopes for many more productive years. Quote
AndrewHill Posted March 2, 2009 Report Posted March 2, 2009 Yeah, HB! Love his work with Cecil Taylor. Quote
AllenLowe Posted March 2, 2009 Report Posted March 2, 2009 love the stuff with Marty Krystal, one of the true unsung greats of the saxophone - Quote
Tom in RI Posted March 2, 2009 Report Posted March 2, 2009 Love the Buellgrass dates, particularly Big Day at Ojai. That's the stuff. Also some love for Blue Chopsticks, Buell's take on Herbie Nichols and featuring the fabulous Richard Greene. Quote
johnlitweiler Posted March 2, 2009 Report Posted March 2, 2009 Ever notice, on those old Cecil Taylor albums, how Neidlinger's aggressive beat makes Dennis Charles and even Billy Higgins sound like they're lagging behind? Happy birthday and keep playing. Quote
NIS Posted March 2, 2009 Report Posted March 2, 2009 Happy Birthday. Blue Chopsticks and Locomotive are two favorite albums for me. Quote
clifford_thornton Posted March 2, 2009 Author Report Posted March 2, 2009 love the stuff with Marty Krystal, one of the true unsung greats of the saxophone - Yes! I have a great 4tet with Hugh Schick, tpt and Vinnie Colaiuta, dr. Heavy shit! Quote
paul secor Posted March 2, 2009 Report Posted March 2, 2009 Heard him play with Andrew White in the mid-sixties - great bassist! Happy birthday, Mr. Neidlinger! Quote
mjzee Posted March 3, 2009 Report Posted March 3, 2009 He produced an excellent Leo Kottke album, "Greetings From Chuck Pink." Listening to it, you can really tell Buell's contribution. Quote
clifford_thornton Posted March 3, 2009 Author Report Posted March 3, 2009 Heard him play with Andrew White in the mid-sixties - great bassist! Happy birthday, Mr. Neidlinger! In Buffalo, right? Buell told me that was some serious shit... I guess Andrew White had something to do with bringing Charles Gayle into the music at the time. Quote
David Gitin Posted March 3, 2009 Report Posted March 3, 2009 Heard him play with Andrew White in the mid-sixties - great bassist! Happy birthday, Mr. Neidlinger! Me too. Was John Bergamo the drummer? And of course I heard Buell with Cecil, with Al Francis, and more... Quote
clifford_thornton Posted March 3, 2009 Author Report Posted March 3, 2009 That was the band Buell had told me about. I think Gayle sat in from time to time. Wish that had been recorded! Quote

paul secor Posted March 3, 2009 Report Posted March 3, 2009 That was the band Buell had told me about. I think Gayle sat in from time to time. Wish that had been recorded! Andrew White issued one track recorded by the White/Neidlinger/Bergamo trio on his Andrew's Music label. I'd bet - or at least I hope - he recorded more than that one track. Quote
fomafomic65 Posted March 20, 2009 Report Posted March 20, 2009 (edited) love the stuff with Marty Krystal, one of the true unsung greats of the saxophone - Me too! I love his music in 'Stringjazz' and 'Buellgrass' groups, both with Krystyall. The Soul Note cd is great. Happy Birthday! Edited March 20, 2009 by ArmandoPeraza Quote
jostber Posted March 20, 2009 Report Posted March 20, 2009 I have listened to his work with Cecil Taylor and love that. Anyone heard this? Quote
danasgoodstuff Posted March 20, 2009 Report Posted March 20, 2009 Blue Chopsticks is, no doubt, wonderful - BUT, damn, that's one awful cover! Quote
Tom in RI Posted March 21, 2009 Report Posted March 21, 2009 I referenced Blue Chopsticks in one of the 1st responses in this thread, a good date. Yes, it is a memorably awkward cover. Quote
paul secor Posted March 22, 2009 Report Posted March 22, 2009 I have listened to his work with Cecil Taylor and love that. Anyone heard this? Herbie Nichols' music presented in a very different light - referring to the music, not the cover. Quote
