medjuck Posted August 18, 2013 Report Posted August 18, 2013 "Bird at St. Nicks" and "Bird on 52nd Street" - both later reissued as part of the OJCCD series. Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but 52nd is also in the Dean Benedetti box - Jimmy Knepper source there, I think? They were actually on Debut but labelled Jazz Workshop JWS 500 (Nick's) and JWS 501 (52nd) - not sure it was an actual sublabel or just a series or whatever ... the JWS label proper only came into existence a bit later, I think? I see Lon posted in the meantime ... so you say they appeared first as three Debut EPs (or 10" LPs)?Does that mean that Knepper got his tape from Benedetti or vice versa? Quote
king ubu Posted August 18, 2013 Report Posted August 18, 2013 Thanks Lon! As for the 52nd Street date (July 6, 1948), Losin says this: These items were recorded by Dean Benedetti. The Parker Quintet was booked at the Onyx Club for six nights, July 6-11 (Tuesday-Sunday). The Benedetti material issued by Mosaic includes parts of at least four of these nights (July 6, 7, 10, and 11), plus a bit of an afternoon rehearsal (July 10). While they're certainly important, these recordings are disappointing, especially compared to those made earlier at the Three Deuces. The fidelity is quite poor throughout, and the items are all edited one way or another. Numbers in parentheses indicate the place of the item in the Mosaic box. "(4/1)" means that this item is on disc 4, track 1. http://plosin.com/milesahead/BirdSessions.aspx?s=480706 So I mixed this up and Knepper has nothing to do with it ... at least not with the recording per se. Quote
medjuck Posted August 18, 2013 Report Posted August 18, 2013 But I also thought that Knepper had recorded either this or the St.Nick's. Wasn't there at least one Bird Lp released that was from Knepper's tapes? Quote
crisp Posted January 7, 2014 Report Posted January 7, 2014 Having been a bit resistant to Mingus over the years I'm toying with getting this set. At 7 discs it's about half the size of the complete set. I'm assuming it's a straight repackaging of something, but I'm not sure what. There is no track listing anywhere. Any ideas? Quote
kh1958 Posted January 7, 2014 Report Posted January 7, 2014 I've never seen that issue, but the box says leader sessions, so it is presumably the portion of the Mingus Debut set where Mingus was the leader of the session. The big debut box also includes sideman Mingus sessions on Debut. Quote
felser Posted January 7, 2014 Report Posted January 7, 2014 And the sideman stuff is really interesting, so not having it would be a loss. Quote
king ubu Posted January 7, 2014 Report Posted January 7, 2014 according to this site it also contains the later "Right Now" album:http://www.ibs.it/disco/0600753426081/charles-mingus/leader-debut.html Quote
Face of the Bass Posted January 7, 2014 Report Posted January 7, 2014 Yeah, I would wait to get the full box. I have had it for a long time and while I don't think it's essential, much of the material is really good, and I wouldn't want to be without the sideman sessions. Quote
king ubu Posted January 7, 2014 Report Posted January 7, 2014 As usual though I can't find any trace (other than a PDF from June announcing its release) on universalmusic.it Quote
crisp Posted January 7, 2014 Report Posted January 7, 2014 Thanks guys. As I'm not that into Mingus (yet, I always say "yet") I'll hold off for now. Quote
kh1958 Posted January 7, 2014 Report Posted January 7, 2014 Thanks guys. As I'm not that into Mingus (yet, I always say "yet") I'll hold off for now. I'd recommend starting with the 1956-57 material on Atlantic, RCA and Bethleham--Pithecanthropus Erectus, The Clown, Tonight at Noon, East Coasting, A Modern Jazz Symposium of Poetry and Music, and Tijuana Moods. Quote
jlhoots Posted January 7, 2014 Report Posted January 7, 2014 Thanks guys. As I'm not that into Mingus (yet, I always say "yet") I'll hold off for now. Start with Atlantic, Columbia, Impulse (IMO) before the Debut material. Quote
crisp Posted January 7, 2014 Report Posted January 7, 2014 Something like this? Or is there something more complete for Atlantic? I have the Columbia albums and one or two others (Money Jungle of course) but as I've never been struck with him, I haven't gone any further. Quote

I have the Columbia albums and one or two others (Money Jungle of course) but as I've never been struck with him, I haven't gone any further. That's a good selection of some very enjoyable albums and that price is frankly a steal. I suspect everyone's going to say "and you need this one as well" so mine would be Black Saint & the Sinner Lady Quote
felser Posted January 7, 2014 Report Posted January 7, 2014 Start with 'The Black Saint and the Sinner Lady' on Impulse. Then the 3CD Columbia box, then the 7CD Atlantic box, then 'The Great Concert of Charles Mingus'. But there's still so much more, those don't do justice to the scope of his work. Quote

I'd go here for the Atlantic sessions: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Passions-Man-Complete-Recordings-1956-1961/dp/B002WBXHXC/ref=sr_1_4?s=music&ie=UTF8&qid=1389126784&sr=1-4&keywords=mingus+box+set It's dearer but it's a beautifully produced boxset and has a really good book(let) as well. jazzbo Posted January 7, 2014 Report Posted January 7, 2014 Hell, that new Debut box may be a good place to start as well. Some excellent music in there. There are many ways to get started with Mingus. . . . If he hasn't stuck before, well maybe he will this time. Quote
David Ayers Posted January 8, 2014 Report Posted January 8, 2014 Don't see details on universalmusic.it yet though did see that the Basie Decca set on 3CDs with original booklet is out - not sure if we discussed that. Quote

crisp Posted January 8, 2014 Report Posted January 8, 2014 All very helpful -- thanks again. I'll weigh up the relative merits of the two Atlantic boxes. Disc 6 of the bigger one being an interview puts me off somewhat, though. Quote
jazzbo Posted January 8, 2014 Report Posted January 8, 2014 Interesting recommendations. I personally prefer the Debut and Bethlehem and Columbia and Jazz Workshop to Atlantic and Impulse, but I really like it ALL. Quote
David Ayers Posted January 8, 2014 Report Posted January 8, 2014 (edited) Lon's right - in the end I don't see how anyone tackling Mingus is not going to get around to all of that excellent and varied material. ...INCLUDING the Atlantic (just the box for me...) and Impulse!
