J.A.W. Posted February 18, 2009 Report Posted February 18, 2009 (edited) Just read on a blues forum that New Orleans guitarist Snooks Eaglin died today (Feb.18, 2009). Another sad loss... obit Edited February 18, 2009 by J.A.W. Quote
Hot Ptah Posted February 18, 2009 Report Posted February 18, 2009 His playing on Professor Longhair's "House Party in New Orleans, The Lost Sessions 1971-72" was particularly outstanding. He packed a ton of soulful feeling into a few notes, very often, on that album, which is a personal favorite of mine. He MADE that album. Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted February 19, 2009 Report Posted February 19, 2009 Sad. His Prestige recordings sprang to mind. Quote
.:.impossible Posted February 19, 2009 Report Posted February 19, 2009 I listen to his music often and had no idea he was still alive. Sad to hear he's gone... Quote
paul secor Posted February 19, 2009 Report Posted February 19, 2009 (edited) Have a Storyville CD that overlaps the Prestige/Bluesville recordings that Chuck mentioned - fine stuff. My favorite Snooks Eaglin recordings are his Imperials, which were collected by Pete Welding on a beautifully done CD in 1995. (Incidentally, contrary to The Times-Picayune obituary, nine Imperial singles were released in the early 60's - more than a "handful".) Thanks, Mr. Eaglin, for making my life a little richer. jostber Posted February 19, 2009 Report Posted February 19, 2009 Thanks for all the great music, Snooks. RIP. Quote
Hot Ptah Posted February 19, 2009 Report Posted February 19, 2009 I have not heard all of his later recordings, but I have his 1987 album, "Baby You Can Get Your Gun", and his 1992 album, "Teasin' You", and both are energetic and excellent, in my opinion. Quote
jostber Posted February 19, 2009 Report Posted February 19, 2009 This is my favourite by Snooks, and a real classic: Hot guitar and singing all over here. That version of "Young Girl" is just wonderful. Quote
Soul Stream Posted February 19, 2009 Report Posted February 19, 2009 Used to see him a lot at the old Antone's on Guadalupe, with George Porter on bass. Amazing musician. Glad I got to see him as much as I did. Quote
Neal Pomea Posted February 19, 2009 Report Posted February 19, 2009 Too bad my friend could never get him to play the Twist and Shout in Bethesda, MD when that was around. Snooks was too devout to travel or work on the Sabbath. Quote
Larry Kart Posted February 19, 2009 Report Posted February 19, 2009 This is the one that blew me away in its original Folkways LP form: http://weeniecampbell.com/mambo/index.php?...5&Itemid=42 Quote
