A 200-pound pet chimpanzee in Stamford, Conn., Monday viciously mauled a woman he had known for years, leaving her critically injured with much of her face torn away, the authorities said. The animal was shot dead by the police after he assaulted an officer in his car.

A horrifying story, and the obvious lesson is that this is what you risk by keeping a wild animal as a "pet". At the same time, I found it rather sad that after being shot by the cop, the animal ultimately crawled back to his home to die.

Even the most experienced chimp handlers can wind up getting a chunk taken out of them, as happened to my former brother-in-law out at the San Diego Zoo a few years ago. He'd worked exclusively with primates for over 25 years but still got half a finger bitten off when he let his guard down.
