jazzhound
I always thought originals were mastered by Bell but now I found one with Van Gelder. what gives?
Shrdlu
Rudy did the 2002 version, which was a 2 CD set called the Deluxe Version. As well as the original album, which makes up the 1st CD, it contains some alternate takes on CD 2 - these were mostly unissued. Some newly unearthed tapes were used for CD 2. It is not clear whether these tapes also included the tracks on CD 1. I suspect that CD 1 was taken from the same source material as all the other CD reissues, though. Bottom line is, that it all sounds great, even the track that had to be taken from a vinyl 45. Parallelling this set is another 2 CD set called the Deluxe Version of the album called "Coltrane". Most of my comments apply equally to that set. If you're into Trane, you will want both sets.

Shrdlu
Yeah, that dawned on me after I posted, Lon. But I left the post there because the info might be handy for someone.
jazzbo
Sure, that makes sense. I'm surprised one of the vinylhounds hasn't chimed in with an answer for him!
clifford_thornton
Other early Impulse orange & blacks I have in stereo are all RVG or VAN GELDER in the dead wax. I do not have Ballads on LP.
Son-of-a-Weizen
I've never had Ballads on vinyl either and just noticed the 45-RPM one (ORG) over at Acoustic Sounds. That looks mighty tempting....as does the 'Stan Meets Chet' one (a pre-order). I totally missed the discussion about these 45-rpm titles. Is there a thread about 'em hiding somewhere else on this board??
robert h.
Originals of Ballads were cut by RVG, and later reissues cut at Bell. I have the ORG Ballads and it is drop dead amazing sounding and worth every penny, The back to front depth is astonishing as its the clarity and tone of Coltrane's horn. Son-of-a-Weizen
Well thanks Robert....think I'll check it out. That $60 price tag's nothing compared to the forthcoming 'Ballads' mini-lp 'glass cd' set that'll soon be available for $2,000. When I first saw this listed on the 'Latest Japanese Re-Issues' thread I thought the 200,000 yen was a typo......and then a joke. Um, guess not.
