fkimbrough Posted February 11, 2009 Report Posted February 11, 2009 (edited) I heard this trio's first set last night - mostly Motian tunes, some of them brand new, along with "Once Around The Park", "Ten", "Drum Music" and a few others. They also played a Tadd Dameron ballad, but I didn't get the title. Though it was the first set of a weeklong run, it was wonderful. Moran brings something entirely new to Motian's music, and played with great depth. I don't think I've ever enjoyed his playing more. Potter knows Motian's music and methods well, and was in excellent form. Paul was enjoying himself so much he was practically laughing out loud as they played. They'll be recording later this week for ECM. It'll be a welcome addition to Motian's discography I'm sure. Edited February 11, 2009 by fkimbrough Quote
WorldB3 Posted February 11, 2009 Report Posted February 11, 2009 (edited) Thank you for the review, I was hoping someone here would go and report back, I so want to see this trio. Even better that its getting recorded by ECM. Hopefully ECM won't sit on it for a year before its release. As always I will be keeping an eye for any upcoming releases by you as I really enjoyed Play and Air. Edited February 11, 2009 by WorldB3 Quote
Guy Berger Posted February 12, 2009 Report Posted February 12, 2009 Thanks Frank. The kind of stuff that makes me almost wish I lived in the Northeast. Then I remember it's an icy tundra. Guy Quote
LWayne Posted February 12, 2009 Report Posted February 12, 2009 (edited) Frank's review is dead-on as the Tuesday night opening set exceeded my expectations. Chris Potter continues to grow as a musician and always impresses regardless of format: whether he is playing with the Dave Holland Quintet, his own Underground Quartet, or this trio setting. To me, however, the highlight was about halfway through the set when Paul Motian launched into a very creative, incendiary, drum solo, that was very compelling, if somewhat uncharacteristic. Don't miss this trio! LWayne Edited February 13, 2009 by LWayne Quote
GA Russell Posted March 5, 2010 Report Posted March 5, 2010 (edited) They'll be recording later this week for ECM. It'll be a welcome addition to Motian's discography I'm sure. ECM is releasing this disc on Tuesday. It's called Lost in a Dream. Ten songs, all but Irving Berlin's Be Careful It's My Heart written by Motian. I'm looking forward to hearing it. Quincy Posted March 5, 2010 Report Posted March 5, 2010 (edited) Even better that its getting recorded by ECM. Oh hot doggie. We need one of those jumping up & down emoticons. Oh well, this will do. and edited - Duh, I started reading at the top like the concert just happened. Thanks for the CD release news GA. Edited March 5, 2010 by Quincy Quote
AllenLowe Posted March 5, 2010 Report Posted March 5, 2010 (edited) I don't think Berlin wrote Lost in a Dream. Edited March 5, 2010 by AllenLowe Quote
AllenLowe Posted March 5, 2010 Report Posted March 5, 2010 just looked it up - Rube Bloom. Unless there's a duplicate title by Irving. Quote
GA Russell Posted March 5, 2010 Report Posted March 5, 2010 Allen, I've asked ECM. We'll see what they say. Quote
GA Russell Posted March 5, 2010 Report Posted March 5, 2010 OK, I see that I misread the notes. The title track was written by Motian. The one composition not written by him is Irving Berlin's Be Careful It's My Heart. I'll correct that post. Quote
GA Russell Posted March 11, 2010 Report Posted March 11, 2010 Lost in a Dream can now be heard at lala: http://www.lala.com/#album/432627041169210756/Paul_Motian/Paul_Motian:_Lost_In_A_Dream The songs remind me of a favorite album of mine, a Paul Bley Copenhagen gig from 1965. Pretty dry, but very enjoyable. Quote
Guy Berger Posted March 12, 2010 Report Posted March 12, 2010 Only listened to this once - but it's good. Definitely better than the most recent Motian/Frisell/Lovano disc. Quote
mjazzg Posted March 12, 2010 Report Posted March 12, 2010 short interview with Mr Motian here http://www.wnyc.org/shows/soundcheck/episodes/2010/03/10/segments/151425 not the most penetrating but.... Quote

Guy,When you say the most recent Motian/Frisell/Lovano, do you mean "Time and Again"? I wasn't crazy about it at first, but it has really grown on me, seriously. Quote

skeith Posted March 18, 2010 Report Posted March 18, 2010 Only listened to this once - but it's good. Definitely better than the most recent Motian/Frisell/Lovano disc. It grew on me too but this disc with Potter and Moran is better. Ok Guy, For me it is a bit sacrilegious having a Paul Motian Trio without Frisell and Lovano, but based on your comments and others here, I have picked it up- in a brown paper wrapper of course. skeith Posted March 19, 2010 Report Posted March 19, 2010 (edited) Can someone move this thread to New Releases now that discussion of the gig has morphed into discussion of the album? I gave it a first listen. I liked it so far, although I am rather partial to the Motian/Frisell/Lovano versions of Mode VI and Birdsong. Edited March 19, 2010 by skeith Quote
