Had a proposal submitted submitted to me for $1400 + $500 a year to host.

I have no idea about these things, plus I'm trying to keep my brother-in-law honest.

Engineers from France are not to be trusted. ;)

I am pretty certain that is a massive rip-off. The site design would have to have a shitload of doohickies to justify that fee.

And yes, I am told that "shitload of doohickies" is the technical term.

Doesn't sound so bad to me, depending on what the site entails. The hosting fee seems a bit much, unless the server needs are beyond your typical website (like this site, which demands it's own server that costs $150 a month).

My wife worked for a local business that designed websites and they would charge as much as $10k for some projects. Then again, the sites had lots of fancy features like Flash, video, audio, etc. and they included logo design with that.

This is what he is including. It may be more than what we were actually looking for, as I don't think I need or want any video or flash stuff. I should however add, that in this price he will do a second site almost indentical to the first for onbe of the other locations. Although, he wants another $250 to host it.

Site development includes:

• Up to 6 pages. Example: Home – Services – Mission – About Us – Contact Us – Clients

• Flash movies

• All required Photoshop work

• All required Flash work

• All required XHTML / CSS work

• Inclusion of all the pictures requested to be displayed

• Submission to search engines

• Hosting

Hosting includes:

• Hosting of site

• Redirection of all domain names to corresponding websites

• Included periodic search engine submission: Yahoo / Google / Live etc.

• Free maintenance and support for your site i.e.: backups, maintenance, configuration etc..

• Free updates to your site up to 10-hours per calendar year. For example, if you want to change pictures, text, phone numbers etc..

It all depends on what's finally delivered and how much maintenance will be required of the site. I've seen designers just dump things right out of a template, so there's little to no "designing" going on - and that's it. All the big firms do this. There is no designing. Dump and done....and cash the check!

The biggest thing is the maintenance and the service they do or don't provide going forward. Sites require constant maintenance, even if you think they won't. If it's just a billboard site and the content rarely changes AND you provided the company ALL the content up front -- that's fine. But if there's a lot of changes -- and/or all the content wasn't provide to them in the beginning -- making updates can get ugly. Especially if you can't get a hold of them!

So 10-hours per calendar year of "free updates" can eaten-up in one round. Fast.

Yeah, but we're providing all the pictures and wording content.

I've gone years without one, never saw the need and I'm not sure I even do now. But, he brought it up again and I am willing to consider.

$500 a year to host is way too much , I pay $119 at Network Solutions and have never had a problem!
