A Lark Ascending Posted February 14, 2009 Report Posted February 14, 2009 I forgot to mention one of my very favorites, Matt Monro. I came across a cd of his today and enjoyed it as usual. I'll have to get another sometime. Wonderful voice. Very much associated with the UK 'light entertainment' industry, but some of his hits from the 60s/70s are as much part of the soundtrack of my youth as The Byrds or The Beatles. Quote
Van Basten II Posted February 15, 2009 Report Posted February 15, 2009 (edited) Frenchwise Alain Bashung is probably the best singer right now. Anthony Hegarty of Anthony and the Johnsons has a great voice à la Jimmy Scott, great studio work although the time i saw him live he hammed it up a little bit too much Edited March 3, 2009 by Van Basten II Quote
Jazzmoose Posted March 3, 2009 Report Posted March 3, 2009 Damn it, Spike Jones should be on this list, just because! Quote
BruceH Posted March 3, 2009 Report Posted March 3, 2009 I'm a fan of many of the singers already mentioned, but let's not forget-- Wreckless Eric Quote
randyhersom Posted March 3, 2009 Report Posted March 3, 2009 Joan Armatrading is my personal favorite, with Van Morrison, Smokey Robinson and Bruce Springsteen not far behind. I'll also concur on Al Green and Kate Bush. Quote
Jazzmoose Posted March 4, 2009 Report Posted March 4, 2009 I'm too lazy to look and see if Roberta Flack has been mentioned, but surely she has... Quote

GA Russell Posted March 5, 2009 Report Posted March 5, 2009 Helen Morgan Chris, I've always wanted to hear a Helen Morgan record. I haven't looked her up at Amazon, but I've never come across an album of hers. Who sounds like her? Quote
randyhersom Posted March 5, 2009 Report Posted March 5, 2009 Hell Yeah! on Bonnie Raitt. Count Basie might have been dissapointed to find out Jummy Rushing wasn't a jazz singer. Quote
Joe G Posted March 5, 2009 Report Posted March 5, 2009 Bruce Dickinson Rob Halford Spent a WHOLE lot of time between 1980 & 1990 listening to those two. People can say whatever they want, but Halford is an amazing singer. I sold Halford a Lincoln in 1990. He walked into the dealership and none of the other sales guys knew who he was and left the up for me. Easiest sale I ever made and dude could not have been more cool. OMG DUDE! DUDE!! Quote
zootsi Posted March 7, 2009 Report Posted March 7, 2009 It's really interesting that nearly all my favorites have already been posted. Here's a few more (non jazz): Laura Nyro Ray Benson (Asleep at the Wheel) Amy Winehouse - ok she's bizarre, but very talented Jackie Wilson Doug Sahm Joni Mitchell Quote
