There appear to be some new RVGs listed for March on the Concord website:

John Coltrane: Standard Coltrane

Sonny Rollins: Worktime

Miles Davis: Collectors' Items

(seems like a small batch; could there be more to come?)

nope. just 3.

also from the website:

In the 11th edition of the Concord Music Group’s remastered CDs originally issued by Prestige Records in the ‘50s and ‘60s, three more classics that engineer Rudy Van Gelder recorded and recently digitally upgraded. All three were recorded in the ‘50s and feature the crème de la crème of the jazz world—titans now; young upstarts then finding their voices. Each album includes original and new liner notes. The titles for this latest batch include albums made by perennial favorites:

Miles Davis: Collectors’ Items

Sonny Rollins: Worktime

John Coltrane: Standard Coltrane

well, yeah, these aren't terribly obscure or exciting (unlike the Feb. Blue Note RVGs, which look great), but I don't have any of them, so I'll be buying them all.

I'll see if I can find them cheap or buy them next time Concord runs a sale. I have these but I do love the sound of the Concord RVG series. . . more than K2s, etc. to be honest.

I just thought of something that strikes me as uncanny: with all of the Miles and Trane RVG's, why haven't they RVG'd (let alone K2'd) Monk's Prestige date called "MONK"? We've now seen K2's and RVG's of Trio and w/ Sonny Rollins, why haven't they dealt with this date? Is there something wrong with the tapes? There seems to be a fine-sounding OJC.

So what's the beef?

I would guess that the beef is they haven't re-done a Complete Monk on Prestige box in 24 bit yet, therefore it would go against their policy of re-issuing the same stuff in 2 different 24 bit re-masters at the same time. :D :D :D

Finally! I've been working for those three for ages!

there is a 3 CD box of the complete Monk Prestige material which i own and like a lot. it is a grouping of K2 material and i think it includes the Miles date Bags Groove, where Monk playes piano, two Monk trio dates, one of which should be the one that's asked after, the one called Monk and which has that drawing of a modern sculpture on the cover together with the lettering Monk, the Trio album, then the with Sonny Rollins date which is also brilliant, and i hope i'm not forgetting anything (i haven't looked and i write strictly from memory like most of the time). the box sounds very good and it's a very good collection of everything Monk recorded for Prestige. it was one of those Concord projects.

you're refferring to individual discs, RVGs and K2s. but if i'm not mistaken it exists in this box. and it should also exist as an individual K2, but i wouldn't bet on that.

I really like the Prestige Monk box (K2 indeed). I have mentioned it repeatedly in threads here. It is still available at reasonable prices. Get it while you can. If you aren't a fan of "another remaster", the photos in the booklet by Esmond Edwards are worth the price.

'MONK' has never been issued as an individual K2 or a Concord RVG for that matter, which is a shame because I own K2's of the other dates and they are extremely fine-sounding to these ears. I just don't understand why this one has never been remastered as a single cd. Sure, the Monk box sounds great, but I already own the individual cds, so it doesn't make sense for me to purchase it.

BTW, this is my favorite prestige date of his, especially because Julius Watkins does wonders on "Friday the 13th"; what a great composition!

Do people really like the sound on the Monk/Prestige box? Sounds harsh and loud to my ears. To each their own.

I realize I'm missing the 1940s stuff, but I prefer the OJCs.

Check your system.

My system is perfectly OK (Mark Levinson gear, Quad electrostatics) and I checked the CDs (Cool Edit Pro); compared with the OJCs there's added compression/reduced dynamics and boosted highs on the CDs in the box, which may account for the differences I'm hearing, but, as I said, to each their own.

Edit: let's not go there again, we've had an unpleasant fight about masterings a few years ago and I don't think it'd be a good idea to repeat it.

I absolutely love the Monk Prestige box, simply because it gathers everything in a neat and orderly fashion, saving the best for last. Oh yeah, and those EE pictures are all kindsa groovy!
