Throw in Pete LaRoca's Basra while we're at it.

Maybe we'll get this one when were through with this Iraq business.

I know it's still a sore spot, but this was easy to pick up when I was in the UK (and they were the ones with the troops in Basra itself), though at that time I only could get the copy-control version.

Throw in Pete LaRoca's Basra while we're at it.

There are used copies on Amazon going for as little as $7.18 at the moment.

That's the Connoisseur version from 1995, which had major skipping problems in the first run. I think Holy Ghost's referring to the RVG that was supposed to be released, but got held back because of our involvement in Iraq.

Yeah, if he's talking about a CD that never got released (in the U.S.), I guess it would be pretty rare! :g

I have the Spanish BN edition (which I think is a TOCJ clone, though I'd have to look), and it sounds great.

POPPIN'

Hank Mobley Japan TOCJ. Features Pepper and is a great recording. This one can be found and is worth the effort!

Hank Mobley, Curtin Call

Blue Note 1611, TOCJ featuring Sonny Clark, August 1957.

I've got both of those, and they're both very good. :tup

Agreed! Snagged these at Tower down at 4th and Broadway in NYC. Boy, do I miss that store (sob, sob).

Wasn't one of the sessions on the Ike Quebec, "From Hackensack to Englewood Cliffs" (which I have) issued on some domestic cd?

Hmmm...looking at the cds, I don't think so...

Perhaps I'm thinking of "Congo Lament"...

The first 8 tracks on the disc were released on the 45 Sessions Mosaic & Blue Note reissue. Leaving only Cry Me A River and Uptight as the orphaned tracks.

Yeah, and I still think Michael Cuscuna goofed up when he didn't put those two extra tracks onto the Connoisseur CD of the 45 Sessions. I forget his exact reasoning, but I doubt those tracks will ever see the light of day on CD again.

Yet another good reason to start selling FLAC downloads directly from the Blue Note site.

Yup, I'm talking about the RVG that was yanked because it was politically incorrect to have 'Basra' as an album title because of the war. If I recall, it was actually Mr. Sims himself, who requested to have it pulled from the RVG batch.

The RVG is readily available in the UK, whose troops were in charge of the city of Basra

Not "Blue Note", but titles issued in Japan on their Something Else sister label which usually showed up in the US on Blue Note. These never made it:

Renee Rosnes - Face To Face

Joe Lovano - Tenor Time

I think also volume 2 of Jimmy Smith's "The master" (recorded in Osaka, 1993) wasn't issued outside Japan, though vol 1 was.

I never heard of this having skipping problems. Mine works fine. And I have to say the 1995 version (Larry Walsh remastered) is easier to listen to than JRVG and the UK/RVG versions I heard.

Mine skipped. I had to exchange it several times until I got one that worked properly. I heard of others having the same issues with their copies. I think Blue Note quietly corrected the problem.

Which brings up one of my biggest RVG gripes. Major pieces left off the RVG Jimmy Smith CD's which have the 'Sermon'/'HouseParty' sessions, which showed up on the original CD's of those sessions. What's up there?

Don't even think of blaming Cuscuna or Blue Note for this. They went back to "LP order" after a few people complained about the shuffled order of the CDs. I think it was stupid and so does Michael, but Blue Note capitulated to a few vocal complainers. It was a small number of complaints, but it was enough that they listened. There's a thread around here somewhere where we debated it. A few of the more vocal complainers contributed their thoughts to that thread.

FWIW, they also changed the order on the RVG/Connoissuer CDs of "The Turnaround", "No Room For Squares" and "Straight No Filter". The original CDs re-arranged the music by recording session and to my ears sounded better that way. The new RVG/Conn discs go back to LP order with bonus tracks sprinkled around. It's weird with the change of pianists.

I have Newton's Romance and Revolution, but I also have another Blue Note Newton that must be kind of rare called The African Flower. It's the music of Duke Ellington and Billy Strayhorn. An interesting collection of musicians play on this including Arthur Blythe and Anthony Braxton. It was recorded in 1985.

Up over and out.

If you want to talk about specific discs, and not material -- then the TOCJ of Lee Morgan's "The Procrastinator" is kinda hard to find, as I recall.

It had an extra session on it as well, which has since been issued here in the U.S. as bonus material on the "Sonic Boom" reissue (and is easily available now). But for a good while there, though, that Japanese "Procrastinator" CD was the only way to get that extra session anywhere in the world on CD.

The Japanese 'Procrastinator' and 'The Rajah' are both pretty rare I think.

Didn't Dan have a copy of the Toshiba 'Procrastinator' in his 'stupendous' sale? In any event, it's an excellent sounding release - and nice to have the George Coleman/Priester session on the same disk too.

I think that the issue here wasn't so much the order of the tracks so much as the fact that they excluded tracks that had been released when there was plenty of room on the RVGs to include them. I think that there is some logic to retaining the original LP orderings (after all a concious decision was made at the time to release them in this form) but not to exclude related tracks where they have been released before.

Not that I think any of us are really in a position to "blame" Cuscuna for anything.

Lawrance Marable's Tenorman I only ever saw once - when I picked it up in Dan's sale. I then promptly lost/misplaced it.

That was the Holy Grail for many years, wasn't it? How about those Leo Parker TOCJs? They're pretty rare...or so I thought?

One's on eBay.

There was only one Leo Parker TOCJ. "Rolling With Leo" was only issued on CD in the US. Those two US CDs by Leo Parker are hard to find even today. I almost included "Let Me Tell You 'Bout It" in my list of rarities above, but since it's reissue as an RVG, it's been in several used bins around here. No "Rolling With Leo" discs though.
