Tom 1960 Posted February 6, 2009 Report Posted February 6, 2009 Anyone care to add some thoughts on this date? Released in 1956 on the Tampa label and available from VSOP, while very brief clocking in just over 26 minutes( Jeez Louise!), it does feature Art Pepper. Can't get enough of Art. Your thoughts as always are appreciated. Quote

I'll give it a spin tonight to refresh my memory but I do recall it has a great version of "Over the Rainbow". Quote

AndrewHill Posted February 6, 2009 Report Posted February 6, 2009 I've had this date for a long time, and maybe I've spun it a handful of times. Its funny though because every time I do, I say to myself, what a fine date, but then I put it away and end up not playing it for years. Sure, you'll find better Pepper dates to choose from, but this one shouldn't be overlooked, and thanks to VSOP, this fairly obscure date is readily available and affordable. So, I recommend picking it up! Quote

It may have been one of his first sessions after his first stay in prison. This is another one I would recommend if you don't have it; Quote
J.A.W. Posted February 6, 2009 Report Posted February 6, 2009 (edited) This is actually an Art Pepper date, released under his name on Tampa 28. It was later reissued as a Marty Paich session. Edited February 6, 2009 by J.A.W. Quote

Great date though, glad I read this thread and dug it out. Quote

Gotta chance to check some of the sample tracks over at AMG and it sounds pretty good to me. Now added to the wishlist. Thanks also for the thoughts concerning the Marty Paich or Art Pepper led date depending on which recording you may own. I may also pick this up at some future date although I probably don't need to rush out too soon. Quote
Son-of-a-Weizen Posted February 6, 2009 Report Posted February 6, 2009 Like the album a good bit ....though I wouldn't be disappointed if 'Over The Rainbow' weren't on it. Sort of a clumsy fade on 'What's Right For You,' isn't it? Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted February 7, 2009 Report Posted February 7, 2009 Over the Rainbow was a special song for Art. One morning at about 3 am I asked Art and Laurie about this and Laurie jumped in to say "Of course, Judy Garland and all that stuff". Art looked up from his plate of eggs and smiled. Quote
Peter Friedman Posted February 7, 2009 Report Posted February 7, 2009 A very good though brief session. Just about everything by Art Pepper from this period is well worth hearing. Quote

jazzhound Posted February 14, 2009 Report Posted February 14, 2009 How does The Broadway Bit fit into the scheme of things? Quote
BillF Posted February 14, 2009 Report Posted February 14, 2009 jazzhound said: How does The Broadway Bit fit into the scheme of things? It's a Marty Paich big band album of familiar Great American Songbook themes. As such it was aimed at a more general audience than the 100% jazz albums we've been discussing. Of course, Art Pepper was also on board for this one, but committed jazz listeners are likely to prefer Art Pepper + Eleven: Modern Jazz Classics if they want to hear him in a Paich big band context. Late Posted February 15, 2009 Report Posted February 15, 2009 The two sessions mentioned above are only separated by three months (August and November, 1956). They're both much stronger than Pepper's Discovery sessions, in my opinion. The + Eleven session is even stronger, I think. Just listened to it today. Art's tenor ... I wish he'd played more of it. (Clarinet's good too.) The K2 of this is super fine. McLovin. Quote
AndrewHill Posted February 15, 2009 Report Posted February 15, 2009 (edited) The Art Pepper Contemporary K2's are superior sounding to these ears. I heard remarkable improvements with all three, but Smack Up sounded especially fine. Edited February 15, 2009 by Holy Ghost Quote
chewy-chew-chew-bean-benitez Posted February 15, 2009 Report Posted February 15, 2009 k2 my foot, you cant improve on DuNanns mastering Quote
Bluesnik Posted February 16, 2009 Report Posted February 16, 2009 i have had this for quite a while and like most Pepper sessions i like it a lot. haven't heard it in a while but i remember i liked it a lot. and it's more of a Pepper session than a Marty Paich. Quote
