sambrasa Posted March 6, 2010 Report Posted March 6, 2010 Muzak is just the name of the label. If you look at their catalogue, it's really no muzak at all. I love the idea of Albert Ayler's albums being issued on Muzak! The Muzak page on the Ayler albums. In Japanese. If you have access to automatic translating, the google translation is worth a try! Swinging Swede Posted March 21, 2010 Report Posted March 21, 2010 Wow, Larry Young's "Heaven On Earth" to be released on CD!! And also The Three Sounds' "Vibrations". That one has not been on CD before. The Japanese are apparently our last remaining hope when it comes to getting new titles reissued on CD. Quote
bertrand Posted March 21, 2010 Report Posted March 21, 2010 (edited) Just saw this thread. I admit I've never bought from Hiroshi. How can I get the Heaven On Earth? Will it be available elsewhere? What's the best chance to get a decent price? Thanks, Bertrand. Edited April 12, 2010 by bertrand Quote

bertrand Posted March 21, 2010 Report Posted March 21, 2010 (edited) Thanks, I'll contact Hiroshi, but CD Universe has a decent price on a preorder (under $19 including shipping). For a TOCJ, that seems reasonable. They show a 5/11 release date. Is it possible that CD Universe never gets this in? I've only ordered U.S. titles from them. How do preorders work? If 50 of us preorder, will they make sure they will get 50 titles to satisfy all the orders or will 48 of them be cancelled? Of course, right after I get this, Blue Note will announce an RVG two-fer of Contrasts and Heaven On Earth which I will be able to get at Borders' with a coupon for $8 Bertrand. I'm guessing you're referring to the 24-bit remastered Blue Note CDs that Toshiba put out in the late 1990s/early 2000s to celebrate Blue Note's 60th Anniversary. I bought several at the time and to my ears those discs sounded loud and harsh; I sold them all. I'm told that many Toshiba Blue Note CD reissues since then use those masterings, but I can't confirm this. Quote
David Ayers Posted March 22, 2010 Report Posted March 22, 2010 If these TOCJ 8*** are indeed the same masterings as the TOCJ 6*** then yes they are bright, but also very clear and a deal less murky than some of the JRVGs and RVGs. Quote

Those TOCJ-6xxx masterings have a lot more compression and reduced dynamics compared to older Japanese and American non-RVG Blue Note CD reissues. Not my cup of tea. Quote

It is a matter of taste though. I wouldn't say to anyone not to buy these if it is an easy route to a title which is otherwise hard to find. And they are more consistent than the (J)RVG series which sometimes sound like an old cassette. That 'consistency' comes at the price of reduced fidelity to the music as recorded and to the Blue Note LP sound, though as some point out the RVG LP mixes were pretty much red dial efforts and not really a shot at acoustic realism. I think at 1100 Yen these are a good way to fill out gaps and - maybe - fun! Quote
