PHILLYQ Posted July 10, 2009 Report Posted July 10, 2009 Well add me to the list of the laid off-I got whacked yesterday. The company(a large bank) had been moving jobs to Mumbai, Jacksonville, & Manila, but I thought that I would be safe for awhile because what I did was risky and could involve some losses if not done right. WRONG!!! When it happened it really caught me by surprise. Something happened Wednesday at work and it was a sensitive issue, so on Thursday when my boss(wonderful woman and friend for 20+ years) told me the the big boss wanted to see me I thought I was in trouble for the incident on Wednesday. Then the big boss tells me that we're going to see an HR person and I was sure I was getting fired, but it was just a layoff. I actually feel relieved and I'm at peace with it, because for the last year since we got new big bosses the work situation has been steadily going downhill and was reaching the intolerable stage. I got a nice severance package- I'm technically on the payroll until the end of this month and then the package kicks in and I get full salary until December. I can also collect unemployment and I still have severance $$ money from my last job, so I could actually go about a year without working. I'm looking at it as a great opportunity to possibly change what I do for a living and I may even go to school to learn something new. Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted July 10, 2009 Report Posted July 10, 2009 Wow. Sorry to hear that. Good luck in the next year. Quote

Alexander Posted July 13, 2009 Report Posted July 13, 2009 Well, I landed a part-time job at Borders, so it looks like I'm back doing book-retail for the time being. I've had a few interviews for teaching positions, and there's one job I have a good feeling about so hopefully I'll hear something this coming week. I also have another teaching interview on Wednesday, so hopefully I'll be teaching again in the fall... Quote
catesta Posted July 29, 2009 Report Posted July 29, 2009 Son of a bitch, just got word that my largest single customer (state agency) had a large chunk of money pulled from their budget. This means I have to layoff 24 of the 80 employees dedicated to these contacts this Friday. We've been experiencing contract cutbacks month after month since last year, but still have been doing pretty well in finding replacement business, although we've had to travel farther and farther to get it. Still, for the most part, aside from a few cuts here and there I've not had to do much in the way of staff reductions and have been able to absord the extra costs. This one stings like a motherfucker though and there is no way I can keep that many extra. Hopefully it does not last as long as I fear it might or I get lucky and land a new contract or two. Overall a great bunch of people that have been with me a while, so it hurts. Bad day. Quote
clifford_thornton Posted July 29, 2009 Report Posted July 29, 2009 Sorry to hear that. Sounds like you are a kindhearted and fair manager. Quote
catesta Posted July 29, 2009 Report Posted July 29, 2009 (edited) There are many times to be a prick, but this ain't it. Layoffs are a bad deal for all involved. If I've got to let people go, that means I just took a hit and had no other option. Yeah sure, I'm still in business and will survive but I'd rather have the fat payroll and the revenue generated as a result of it than less people with trucks and equipment parked even though it can turn into a positive on the bottom line. Plus as in my case, I'm losing some quality people that will more than likely have to leave the area in search of work and I hate to see that. Edited July 29, 2009 by catesta Quote
connoisseur series500 Posted July 29, 2009 Report Posted July 29, 2009 Good luck Chris. I know you recently moved, and I hope your area will experience a quick and full recovery. People in the Industrial Midwest likely won't ever fully recover from the loss of industry. I'm starting to think about possibly moving out of the area permanently. It is so blighted over here. I've got one more semester of school, and my son has to finish out his senior year in high school. After that, we're open to moving anywhere. Quote
jazzbo Posted July 29, 2009 Report Posted July 29, 2009 Shawn got good news last week. . .work, starting Monday and probably/hopefully continuing for some time. Quote
Shawn Posted July 30, 2009 Report Posted July 30, 2009 Yes, at the very least it's a year long contract, with the possibility of getting hired on full-time. I'm just incredibly grateful to have a steady 40 hour per week gig, it's been WAY too long. Here's hoping others get good news soon. It took over a year to find a full-time gig, so incredible patience was required, along with the willingness to not let myself get buried in despair. I don't regret anything in life, so I'm taking it as a "character test" and moving forward, looking back does nothing. Quote
