Shawn Posted June 12, 2009 Report Posted June 12, 2009 I'm guessing because a starter is usually something you can replace yourself...while a timing belt is a major ordeal. Quote
JSngry Posted June 12, 2009 Report Posted June 12, 2009 Yeah, but if your timing belt goes, you don't need no more starter... Quote
BERIGAN Posted June 13, 2009 Report Posted June 13, 2009 2000 Honda Civic HX Needs Timing Belt Major Service Starter Brakes Aligment Power window on driver side is broken It will go half way down and will not go back up Plus something else I can not remember at the moment Soulstation, did you ever try tapping the starter like I mentioned before??? With a wooden mallet, or LIGHTLY with a read one??? Hell, check to make sure the sucker ain't loose, or the connections to it. Mechanics can get sloppy. If it really would cost that much to get it ship shape, you might want to look into another car. You might find some early 70's Duster 4 door with a slant 6(meaning a very simple car-timing chains, not a timing belt, and they get good gas mileage) for less than a grand. You might even luck into a car like yours cheap that had it's belt replaced recently. Check Craigs list, thick with cars. Hey wait, more swell suggestions. Non car related. I haven't a clue if candles sell well on ebay, but have you thought of doing that???? A quick search showed me if nothing else you might save some dough on candle making supplies. Nothing beats being your own boss. Stick with it even when times get better. 2000 Honda Civic HX Needs Timing Belt Major Service Starter Brakes Aligment Power window on driver side is broken It will go half way down and will not go back up Plus something else I can not remember at the moment I have a 2000 Honda Civic LX, 93,000 miles now, and never a problem at all. Seeing all those issues you've got leaves me worried about when my luck will run out. Dan, I am betting with all the trouble SS1 is talking about, he has a lot more miles on his car. Quote
Soulstation1 Posted June 13, 2009 Report Posted June 13, 2009 (edited) Random thoughts on candles I'd like to make/sell them every 2/3 months Times when I must have candles for sale Oct - Dec for the holidays and they make scents for the holidays Valentines and Mothers day Do not like asking people all the time if they would like to buy them Might wear out my welcome selling them I have a knack for knowing who would like them and I am correct almost every time OTOH Someone told me I should bring them up to the bar at least once a week Making the new scents is risky making 2 at a time because I'm not sure if they will sell I am stuck with 4 scents/ 8 jars that have not sold if I have the jar/wax I have someone who is interested in another Nag Champa and she already bought 2 and gave one away as a gift Tried offering $1 off on the candles if people would return the jars and it was cleaned out which would take 2 minutes at the max. Sold over 100 candles and not one person has ever reused the jar. One guy uses them for an ash tray LOL Only supply I can buy in town is the 8 oz large mouth mason jars over at Ace Hardware and I can sometimes use a $5 off coupon when I buy 3 boxes Also I am willing to sell them cheaper if I've had them for awhile but I don't want people waiting for them to go down in price But I could avoid this by making and selling scents I know will sell At this stage I know what will sell Example I sold some Christmas candles a month ago for a dollar just to get rid of them and still have about 5 left I paid almost a dollar per jar Edited June 13, 2009 by Soulstation1 Quote
Jazzmoose Posted June 13, 2009 Report Posted June 13, 2009 Have you ever tried setting up at one of those New Age craft fairs? I'll bet that crowd would eat that stuff up. If you really wanted to maximize sales at one of those, dress up like Sun Ra! Quote
Soulstation1 Posted June 13, 2009 Report Posted June 13, 2009 One major problem in tucson is that it is 100 degrees outside and that will make the candles melt I left a box in the car last summer and everyone had to be repoured They melted and the wick went all the way to the side of the jar My friend leaves his candles in his car and has leather seats He left them on their side on the seats and is very lucky the jar was tight and they didn't melt It would ruin his seats Quote
JSngry Posted June 13, 2009 Report Posted June 13, 2009 Dude, it sounds like you got a potentially viable business on your hands. Maybe not a BIG one, but one that can provide you with some reliable income. Do you have any family/friends/whatever w/traditional business/marketing skills who could maybe give you some schooling on how to minimize loss and maximize profit, manage inventory, and stuff like that? There is a knack to making it work profitably, it's not all just luck. Quote
Soulstation1 Posted June 16, 2009 Report Posted June 16, 2009 Talked to another regular at the bar and she said she'd buy some candles later this week I had a feeling she might be interested Trying to sell about $50 worth so I can work on the next batch Quote
king ubu Posted June 17, 2009 Report Posted June 17, 2009 I just survived the current waves of lay-offs... it's just a part-time job (in a big company touched badly by the financial crisis and some strawberry diet coke consumer has his fingers in there...) and I'm no longer emotionally attached, after they let us wait for almost half a year, in complete ignorance of what's going on behind the scenes. Anyway, at the current point in life, it would have still been a major drag if I'd been among those who were fired. And I feel it was a very close shave, actually in light of the persons hit, I'm still astonished I wasn't part of it. It's been a horrible day, we were all sitting there paralyzed, waiting for them to come again and pick up the next person... they didn't even tell us it was over until about an hour later. But then I guess that's how it goes in those big corporations. Quote

king ubu Posted June 17, 2009 Report Posted June 17, 2009 they didn't even tell us it was over until about an hour later. Wow. Talk about cruel. Yeah, must have been the longest 1.5 hours in my life so far. The thing is, there were a few among us who wouldn't have cared to be laid off, but even those sat there paralyzed, just because that situation was so impossible to take... On the other hand, they let us wait for about five months now, while for about three months it was perfectly clear that lay-offs would eventually follow. Quote
king ubu Posted June 17, 2009 Report Posted June 17, 2009 And just to add this: I have been following this depressing thread now and then and with the situation I've been in, those concerned have my full sympathy! Quote
sidewinder Posted June 17, 2009 Report Posted June 17, 2009 I just survived the current waves of lay-offs... Good to hear. Hang in there ! Unless you work for the Government no-one seems safe at the moment. I'd view it as 'character building'. Quote

king ubu Posted June 18, 2009 Report Posted June 18, 2009 Yeah, and while Chuck's comment about re-assessing what you do and why and why you don't do something different... while that comment may seem hard to those actually without employment, it made me think. I've been expecting to be fired quite definitely for several months (I got a bad "rating" for last year - change of bosses, me being a smartass and often cynical commenter... and more tough shit going on there before etc etc), and Chuck's comment definitely made me think quite a bit! Soulstation1 Posted June 19, 2009 Report Posted June 19, 2009 There are not any jobs listed in the Sunday newspaper Two people I know lost their jobs in the past 5 days Depressing Quote
papsrus Posted June 19, 2009 Report Posted June 19, 2009 Friend of mine knows this woman who had a standard office job. She recently found out she had breast cancer. Mastectomy. Cancer may have spread. More surgery needed after recovery. But while still recovering from the mastectomy she was laid off. ... Now that's depressing. I assume Cobra will/may cover the cost of some of her additional medical treatments in the near term, but man, can you imagine the person who had to tell her she was out of a job? I'd quit before I'd do that, I think. And on the way out the door I'd tell the MF who made the decision that they were stirring up some major bad karma. Quote
