Free For All Posted January 22, 2009 Report Posted January 22, 2009 Today is J.J.'s birthday (85th, I believe) and I'm listening to and remembering this great artist. He inspired me to play and write and continues to inspire players young and old. His Mosiac box is one of my favorites (as well as the Mosaic single J.J.!). I'm glad I got to meet him some years ago- I just wanted to thank him for all the great music. And he was a classy gentleman as well. Happy Birthday J.J., and thanks for everything! Quote
Quincy Posted January 22, 2009 Report Posted January 22, 2009 I keep bumping into his recordings thanks to the many great players in his bands. He's always been a "go to" guy when I want to hear Bobby Jaspar, but in the past few weeks I've pulled out the Mosaic box to listen to young Freddie Hubbard and Elvin Jones as well. The leader of the band is pretty darn good too. Quote
sidewinder Posted January 22, 2009 Report Posted January 22, 2009 Got to get that Mosaic box out in recognition of the late JJ's 85th. I've still got his signature framed upstairs - he came across as a very serious guy but classy and a gent for sure. Quote
BFrank Posted January 23, 2009 Report Posted January 23, 2009 Thanks for the heads-up, Free! I'll pull out the box tonight. Glad I have the "J.J.!" single on order, too. Quote
AndrewHill Posted January 23, 2009 Report Posted January 23, 2009 One of the greats for sure. Love the BN's and the JJ and Co. on Columbia and the RCA JJ! too. Quote
Gheorghe Posted January 23, 2009 Report Posted January 23, 2009 The foremost bop-trombonist and sure one of the 7 or 8 key figures of bop. Besides other recordings I´ll listen again to the Savoy-sides he made during the 40s. Quote
Free For All Posted January 23, 2009 Author Report Posted January 23, 2009 (edited) My first J.J. record (purchased in 1976 or so), still a favorite. It made me realize that THE SOUND is such a big part of what it's ALLLLLL ABOUT. Thank you J.J.! Edited January 23, 2009 by Free For All Quote
poetrylover3 Posted January 23, 2009 Report Posted January 23, 2009 So your most recommended J J Johnson discs are...(I have no J J Johnson dates in my collection, obviously a glaring omission) Quote
BFrank Posted January 24, 2009 Report Posted January 24, 2009 ... and besides JJ, I would definitely recommend this: Quote
ghost of miles Posted January 22, 2024 Report Posted January 22, 2024 Up for J.J.’s centennial today. Here’s a tribute show I put together for Night Lights that traces his musical career from beginning to end: Portrait of J.J.: A Brief History of J.J. Johnson Quote
Gheorghe Posted January 29, 2024 Report Posted January 29, 2024 I have my all time favourites of J.J. I think what had impressed me most during my youth was the "Yokohama Concert" and I was the first who had bought it and some of my high school colleages, even those 2,3 years younger than me taped it and hummed it, mostly the first title. I also like very much "Pincaccle " with a lot of stars on it. And needless to say his vintage bop sessions with Bud for Savoy. I have heard that in the 60´s he mostly wrote for movies. Quote
sidewinder Posted January 29, 2024 Report Posted January 29, 2024 (edited) 'Yokohama Concert' on Pablo was the first one I bought too and it marked a return to jazz for JJ after years in the studio. So glad I got to see and meet him in that last period of live gigging (with a young Rene Rosnes on piano). A true legend. Edited January 29, 2024 by sidewinder Quote
