mikeweil Posted January 20, 2009 Report Posted January 20, 2009 Correct - track 9 is from the same concert. Quote
Cliff Englewood Posted January 20, 2009 Author Report Posted January 20, 2009 Ah so it's a live session, cheers Lon and Mike. How is the sound on the Prestige release? Decent? Quote
mikeweil Posted January 20, 2009 Report Posted January 20, 2009 Sound is okay on the Prestige LPs - but I haven't heard any other issues. The LPs have them as two long continuous tracks. The third piece is a vocal IIRC - my Gray disco is still in the old house ... will post as soon as I have moved it here. Can't locate the rare LP it was on, must have it somewhere. Quote

Cliff Englewood Posted January 20, 2009 Author Report Posted January 20, 2009 Thanks Lon and Mike for your speedy replies, I might just have to pick this one up. Cheers. As a side note, I have a soft spot for the song "I Can't Give You Anything But Love" due to it's "staring role" in one of my favorite films, "The Killing of a Chinese Bookie", I love when Ben Gazzara is singing it into the phone, classic. AllenLowe Posted January 21, 2009 Report Posted January 21, 2009 I THINK THEY'RE FROM JAZZ AT MASSEY HALL Quote
jazzbo Posted January 21, 2009 Report Posted January 21, 2009 Good one Allen. The sound is fine on the OJC cd. Quote
Gheorghe Posted January 21, 2009 Report Posted January 21, 2009 I also have those two albums "Memorial Vol. 1 and 2" from Prestige (japanese edition with many alternative tracks especially from the first (1949) quartet session. And I especially like the tunes with Teddy Charles, that session with "The Man I Love". Some really really beautiful Gray I also can hear on a 1951 Boston date (live) with Parker (The Happy Bird). Gray is especially fine on that. "Lullaby in Rhythm" really knocked me out. Quote
mikeweil Posted January 21, 2009 Report Posted January 21, 2009 If you don't want every alternate take Gray played, the Classics CD is fine. That Damita Jo vocal is a bit off mike, the reason why it stayed unissued at the time. It survived because Sonny Criss kept a copy and handed it over to Don Schlitten at some time - the latter released it on the Criss Memorial Album on Xanadu. Quote
king ubu Posted January 21, 2009 Report Posted January 21, 2009 I WISH SOMEONE WOULD RE-ISSUE ALL THOSE MASTERS OF JAZZ, AND THEN CONTINUE THE SERIES!!! IT WAS SCHEDULED TO BE ABOUT 15 (!!!!) CDS BUT ONLY HALF OF THEM EVER CAME OUT, AND THEY'RE ALL OOP AND IMPOSSIBLE TO FINED! Quote

I didn't think I would want every alternate take Gray played until I got this; Gray is just excellent on all the alternates of the "One for Prez" cd, but it's so hard to find things in Dublin these days I might just go for it.
