Epithet Posted March 31, 2003 Report Posted March 31, 2003 I was wondering if any of you had saved some of the discographies Mosaic provided on their website. I'm looking specifically for the Lee Morgan and Andrew Hill sets. Would someone be able to e-mail me these? Quote
Claude Posted March 31, 2003 Report Posted March 31, 2003 I've posted some links to "hidden" Mosaic discographies (only the recent OOP sets) on the AAJ board: http://forums.allaboutjazz.com/showthread....s=&threadid=457 The Morgan discography can be found here: http://pllab.hyu.ac.kr/~doh/music/mosaic/162.html Quote

Producer's note: This set collects the Pacific Jazz studio recordings by Bud Shank between 1956 and 1961, which focus essentially on his mid-fifties quartet with Claude Williamson and early-sixties quintet with Carmell Jones and Dennis Budimir. Although his collaborations with Laurindo Almeida and Bob Cooper attained more attention and success at the time, this overlooked body of work captures one of the West Coast's finest reedmen at his best. No master tape has survived for Tangerine (B) and Misty Eyes (E). These selections were dubbed from LP pressings. As with any project that involves Pacific Jazz, there are tapes that are in less than first class condition. There will be sound flaws springled thoughout the set, such as the drop outs and slight phasing at certain points during Tertia (B). Where these occur, they are unavoidable and irrepairable. Session notes indicate that a portion of the piano solo from take 3 was edited in. *** The bass solos and four-bar exchanges between the tenor saxophone and drums were edited out of the original issue of "Introducing Wayne Shorter" and all its subsequent LP and CD reissues under that title except FHCY-1014. Although Vee Jay FHCY-1004 claims to contain alternate takes, the only alternate take is "Blues A La Carte". The master take appears for the other three titles. To further complicate matters, the titles of "Blues A La Carte" and "Harry's Last Stand" are flipflopped. All titles except "Pug Nose" (take 2) appear on FHCY-1014, which reverses the master and alternate takes of "Harry's Last Stand", "Down In The Depths" and "Black Diamond". __________________________________________________________________ WAYNE SHORTER - SECOND GENESIS (G) Wayne Shorter (ts), Cedar Walton (p), Bob Cranshaw (b), Art Blakey (d). Web site: www.mosaicrecords.com. PRODUCER'S NOTE This set contains all the sessions led by Wayne Shorter and Lee Morgan for Vee Jay as well as the Young Lions sessions that they essentially co-led. They also appeared together on a Wynton Kelly album entitled Kelly Great, which will be included on a forthcoming Mosaic set of Wynton Kelly and Paul Chambers sessions for Vee Jay. Because the music from these sessions has been issued in so many different ways, we elected to present the music in the strict chronological order in which it was recorded. With master improvisers like Morgan and Shorter, this approach is especially enlightening. It also puts into perspective the issued alternate takes, some of which have performance flaws in the melodies and arrangements. With the exception of three performances from "Here's Lee Morgan" and six from "Introducing Wayne Shorter", the masters for this set were transferred from the original session tapes. The shifting of the drum placement at the piano solo during the first take of "Blues A La Carte" (session E) was done by the engineer at the original session. The overload distortion on the drum solo in the first take of "Black Diamond" (E) is also in the original tape. The occasional trumpet distortion of sessions C & D, especially on the master take of "Expoobident" (D), occurred in the original recording process. Quote

(3022) and Kelly At Midnight (3011), all material was transferred from original tapes. The performances within each session appear in that order in which they were made. The single exception I s the first version of "Runnin'" (session F) which appears out of sequence because the CD timing. There are minor defects like the bass buzz toward the end of take two of "Autumn Leaves" (session I), which were in the original source. The edit at 1:12 into take nine of "Scotch and Water (aka Joe's Avenue)" was necessitated by loud eletronic noise that momentarily marred the original recording. Quote

Brad Posted August 24, 2004 Report Posted August 24, 2004 That is extremely helpful. Does anyone have a link to the discography for the Nat King Cole set. That would would be very, very helpful. Quote
Jim R Posted August 24, 2004 Report Posted August 24, 2004 The Cole set is one that I was going to ask about in terms of a complete discography (there are several older sets where I have most of the data in my database, but not complete discographies from the Mosaic site). Nobody else seems to find it convenient to copy and paste here, so I haven't popped the question(s). Anyway, I do have quite a bit of data for the Cole set: Partial Discography (taken from an online Oscar Moore discog): THE KING COLE TRIO : Nat "King" Cole-p-v / Oscar Moore-g / Johnny Miller-b New Jim R Posted September 17, 2004 Report Posted September 17, 2004 Does anyone have data on the Mosaic Count Basie Studio Recordings? I'm particularly interested in identifying the arrangers. Skipping Tony's question for the moment (I don't have the Kenton, Holman, Russo set- #136... haven't managed to find the discog on the Mosaic site... and the online Kenton discogs don't seem to include that album index info). So, if anyone has that set... Now for the Basie Studio question... The arrangers include the following, and their initials are given after the name of each track that they arranged (if they were also the composer, the designation is "a/c"). The tracks with "vJW" and "vIR" indicate vocals by Joe Williams or Irene Reid. Arrangements by: Count Basie, Frank Foster, Freddie Green, Neal Hefti, Thad Jones, Billy May, Jimmy Mundy, Joe Newman, Nat Pierce, Edgar Sampson, Lalo Schifrin, Frank Wess, and Ernie Wilkins DISC 1 (A) Wendell Culley, Snooky Young, Thad Jones, Joe Newman (tps), Henry Coker, Bill Hughes, Benny Powell (tbs), Frank Wess (as, fl), Marshall Royal (as), Eddie Lockjaw Davis (ts), Frank Foster (ts), Charles Fowlkes (bari), Count Basie (p), Freddie Green (g), Eddie Jones (bass), Sonny Payne (d), Joe Williams (vcl). Tony Pusey Posted September 17, 2004 Report Posted September 17, 2004 Jim, I do have the set, but search as I can in the booklet I cannot find this information for the life of me! I am a Kenton neophite having just received this box and I dont know where to go next! Quote
Jim R Posted September 17, 2004 Report Posted September 17, 2004 Odd... usually the album index appears immediately following the session listings in the discography. I'm not at all familiar with that music or that set... is it possible that a lot of that music was previously unissued? The reason I ask is that in the online Kenton discography page that I found ( http://kenton.crispen.org/discography.html ), there were only two LP's referenced in correlation to another CD issue of (at least some of) this music; and zero LP data given in correlation to the Mosaic. The original Capitol LP's listed in correlation to another album titled "Kenton Showcase: The Music of Bill Holman and Bill Russo" were Capitol T-598; and W-524. I can't find any info on T-598, but W-524 (titled "Kenton Showcase") was a 1955 12" reissue of two 10" LP's- H-525 ("Kenton Showcase: The Music of Bill Russo") and H-526 ("Kenton Showcase: The Music of Bill Holman"). That's about all I can dig up at the moment... Quote
