theteach Posted December 31, 2008 Report Posted December 31, 2008 (edited) Hello everyone, I'm just listening to some of my favorite sessions and for some of them I say to myself, 'wow, I wish I was sitting in on that session." Here's my list of soulful cookin' sessions: King Curtis: Soul Meeting Charles Mingus: Oh Yeah Bennie Green: Walking Down Bennie Green: Walkin' and Talkin' Benny Golson: Groovin' w/ Golson Arnett Cobb: Party Time Oliver Nelson: Soul Battle Harry Edison: Mr. Swing/Swinger Booker Ervin: Cookin' If only I could include live sessions. Studio sessions only. Lou Edited December 31, 2008 by theteach Quote
flat5 Posted December 31, 2008 Report Posted December 31, 2008 (edited) Maybe Gene Ammons - Jammin’ with Gene (1956) Problem is I would not have improved the session :-) I mean, I would have been 8 years old. I didn't even start to play clarinet for another 3 years. Edited December 31, 2008 by flat5 Quote
Joe Posted December 31, 2008 Report Posted December 31, 2008 I would have liked to have been at the infamous HARD DRIVIN' JAZZ session, just to see if it was as tense as Cecil Taylor described in Spellman's FOUR LIVES. Quote
Hot Ptah Posted December 31, 2008 Report Posted December 31, 2008 In his autobiography, Earl Palmer describes a session held at Lowell George's home studio, which would have been fun for reasons unrelated to the music. Quote
AndrewHill Posted January 1, 2009 Report Posted January 1, 2009 I would have liked to have been at the infamous HARD DRIVIN' JAZZ session, just to see if it was as tense as Cecil Taylor described in Spellman's FOUR LIVES. Yeah definitely, with the unfolding issue between Dorham and Taylor. I personally would have really like to have seen the Miles Davis and the Modern Jazz Giants session, with Monk and Miles at each other's throats. Quote
flat5 Posted January 1, 2009 Report Posted January 1, 2009 (edited) Oh you mean to witness - not to partake in. Jazz at Massy Hall. Eric Dolphy at the Five Spot. Sonny Rollins at the Vanguard. Cannonball Adderley at the Lighthouse Darn...you said not live sessions. Diz & Bird Bird Dial and Savoy Sessions Miles last two Prestige sessions. Lester Young, Nat Cole, Buddy Rich session Many Ellington sessions!! Edited January 1, 2009 by flat5 Quote

Christiern Posted January 1, 2009 Report Posted January 1, 2009 I can think of some sessions I wish I hadn't been present at, but not many. Quote
sidewinder Posted January 1, 2009 Report Posted January 1, 2009 The Charlie Parker 'Lover Man' session. Quote
Free For All Posted January 1, 2009 Report Posted January 1, 2009 Some great responses. I'll add a couple: For a live session the first that comes to mind is Miles' Plugged Nickel. Quote
B. Clugston Posted January 1, 2009 Report Posted January 1, 2009 Blue Moods with Miles Davis and Charles Mingus would have been entertaining to watch from behind the glass. Quote
theteach Posted January 1, 2009 Author Report Posted January 1, 2009 Great responses everyone. If I could pick a live session it would be easily and by a wide margin be Arnett Cobb's Live at Sandy's. Lou Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted January 2, 2009 Report Posted January 2, 2009 Something by the Luis Russell band around 1930, Henderson session of 9/22/33, one of the Billy Banks sessions and a huge bunch more. The Autograph session of duets by Morton and Oliver would be nice. Spiritual Unity would cap my day! Quote
AndrewHill Posted January 2, 2009 Report Posted January 2, 2009 A couple of others: Trane's Blue Trane session to see whether John was sucking on a reed or a needle. Miles' Musings of Miles to see Pettiford playing drunk. Quote
sidewinder Posted January 2, 2009 Report Posted January 2, 2009 Spiritual Unity would cap my day! Wasn't Brownie there at that one? (or was it another Ayler ESP session?) Quote

sidewinder Posted January 2, 2009 Report Posted January 2, 2009 Joe Harriott 'Abstract' session for UK Columbia. Shake Keane and his brandy glass ! Cecil Taylor and Mary Lou Williams 'Pablo Live' performance. Mingus UCLA mass-firing live recording. Quote
clifford_thornton Posted January 2, 2009 Report Posted January 2, 2009 Spiritual Unity would cap my day! Wasn't Brownie there at that one? (or was it another Ayler ESP session?) I think it was Spirits Rejoice. He also attended some of the BYG recording sessions in Paris in '69. Quote
JSngry Posted January 2, 2009 Report Posted January 2, 2009 East Broadway Rundown. No question about that. Quote
brownie Posted January 2, 2009 Report Posted January 2, 2009 Spiritual Unity would cap my day! Wasn't Brownie there at that one? No! I was not in New York at the time. But I was at the 'Spirits Rejoice' session sometime later... Other photos I took that day illustrate the liner notes to the ESP CD reissue of the session. THE session I wish I could have sat in: the Jones-Smith Inc. session in Chicago, November 9, 1936 Quote
Joe Posted January 2, 2009 Report Posted January 2, 2009 Sitting in? Any of the Buck Clayton Columbia jam sessions. If I were a pianist -- Lee Konitz's MOTION. Coltrane's OM or KULU SE MAMA. Quote
JSngry Posted January 2, 2009 Report Posted January 2, 2009 Sitting in? If I were a pianist -- Lee Konitz's MOTION. Geez, Joe, that's kinda like wanting to take seconds on the Immaculate Conception... Quote
AndrewHill Posted January 2, 2009 Report Posted January 2, 2009 Coltrane's OM Oh Yeah! That way, we can establish whether they were on acid or not! Quote
