Sounds great to me!

Thing about this is that there is a huge amount of variety - if someone tried to push a 17 CD set by the Modern Jazz Quartet from their final 25 years, I'd definitely balk.

This has Mahavishnu (lineup with JL Ponty), Shakti (a few different versions, old and new), the One Truth band, a duo set with Chick Corea, the Mahavisnu band with Bill Evans and Mitch Forman (and NO drummer? No Cobham? No Gottlieb?), a duo set with Paco De Lucia (and NO Al DiMeola, thank God), two shows by the organ trio with DeFrancesco, a set by the "Heart of Things" band

Apparently someone put the kibosh on the 1972 Mahavishnu Orchestra (original lineup).

www.montreuxsounds.ch has all the details.

I wish there were a couple of other bands - the one with Katia Labeque, the trio with Trilok Gurtu, etc. but this is still a phenomenal addition to the available McLaughlin discography. And it's legit!

Sir, may I have some more?

Mike

I bought this box set for my dad about 5 years ago for his birthday. I gave the whole set a listen at one point over a weekend, and I remember really liking the majority of it. The only stuff I didn't care for was the 1980's version of the Mahavishnu Orchestra, but it was easily overshadowed by all the other great stuff in the set. The Shakti stuff, the duo sets, and the band with Joey DeFrancesco are the ones I remember as being particularly impressive.

I'm surprised that there are so many disks in this set. For a long time, I've felt that John was under-recorded. All I have thus far are the sessions with Miles (on which he just about steals the show) and a copy of "The Heart of Things" that I obtained from a Swiss-German satellite TV station - they used to play CDs on air after broadcasting was over for the night.

Yes, the original Mahavishnu Orchestra were just amazing. If there were still an American record industry, they would deserve a boxed set retrospective, remastered, with unissued tracks and a booklet - like a Rhino deluxe package.

I'd be all over that! I only have the first two and the "Lost Trident" (which indeed is not the great relevation some had hoped it would be). I think there's be one more album to have, but that one only came out in an old stinkin' version, right? (I'm thinking of "Between Nothingness and Eternity")

BNAE is an AMAZING album. You have to have it (and I don't say that often here). I think it's head and shoulders above Inner Mounting Flame and Birds Of Fire. It rocks, it thunders. I was at one of those concerts that weekend (including the one that produced "Dream" for the album), and I can attest that's what they sounded like live. They rock! Check out McLaughlin's breaking into "Sunshine of Your Love" during "Dream." I would love to have an expanded version of this album.

I think "Lost Trident" is just the studio version of the material that went into BNAE; it was probably nixed because they thought the live versions were superior.

That's quite a... well, blazing... recommendation! I'll look for it!

Yes to all the above, that's what I always thought.
