(In the voice of Rod Serling) You have entered ... the Mosaic Zone ... a seductive and mysterious island of desire, where the rational mind soon abandons its moorings, and the ghosts from OKeh sessions long since past lurch from their cryptic vaults and pull you in ... to ... the Mosaic Zone.

RT,

I think you can pass on the Tyner Select. . . eventually I think Cosmos will come out in some form other than the Select and you don't need any of the other titles, so. . . pass it by.

The Toshiko will be available for a long time to come.

I'd say go with your expanded 400+ plan and then you're good for some time.

Is this worth $44?? Anybody can chime in... :w

I thought I had the Cosmos LP lying around, but I can't find it at the moment. Anyway, both the Tyner and Akiyoshi/Tabackin will be available for quite some time, so don't feel any pressure to get them right now. I'm not as sure as Lon that "Cosmos" will reappear as a single though.

OK, the Tyner is officially off the table. I just listened to AMG samples of all five of the tracks (plus one of them, the full tune, can be listened to from the Mosaic site). Nice, but not worth $44 to me right now.

The Toshiko is still an open question, and I'm still leaning towards not getting it right now. Anybody wanna convince me otherwise??

Also, I realized I already have all of the material on the disc #3 of the Weston -- so I should probably reevaluate that decision too (are the first two discs of the Weston worth $44 to me??).

And I should probably re-scrutinize my decisions to get the Hill and Hutcherson. Open to more opinions on both.

I'm torn on the Hill. I love "Homage" (which is also Hill solo piano), but I've been a little slower in getting into all the other solo-piano things I have by him. I know, it's Hill, so I'm gonna need it eventually. But it'll be available forever (it'll probably time-out before it sells-out). But it is Hill, and he's on my all-time top-5 favorite artist list.

And the Hutcherson has some Woody Shaw on it too -- another "top 5" artist of mine.

I'd grab them all... I didn't get the Moncur as I had several of the CD's that came out under Jackie Mclean's name... The Braxton's just not my cup of tea..

Which Hill are talking about? The Solo or Select #16.. I had the Solo but it didn't really work for me... Did you get the Akiyoshi??? That'd be my vote.. (and what about the Oscar Peterson?)

OK, so if I look at the "shipping costs" angle of this (which is usually where I try to cost-justify the moon! -- in order to save a few dollars on shipping :g ) -- I can get just the Moncur, Braxton, and the Farmer (single) for slightly less than $200 (plus $14 shipping) -- or $209 total.

BUT, if I get EVERYTHING I really want NOW (which would also include the Hill, Hutcherson, Weston, and the Zeitlin (pre-order) -- that would amount to about $175 MORE than just getting the Moncur, Braxton and Farmer.

And, (here's where I cost-justify the moon), I'd only pay $2 more in shipping if I got one HUGE order NOW, as opposed to breaking it all up into two orders -- thus saving me $12 in unnecessary shipping costs (i.e. $16 now for everything, vs. $14 now plus $14 later -- assuming I'm going to buy all this stuff eventually anyway).

But that makes for one damn big order (almost $400). Youch.

Decisions, decisions....

PS: My history with Mosaic is that I'll put off ordering things from them -- sometime for years and YEARS -- until something I want is about to go out of print (or something I REALLY want comes into print). Then I'll buy EVERYTHING they currently have at that time that I think I'll EVER want -- resulting in orders from them that are usually $300 or $400 each. I think the last time I ordered from them I got something like one big box, four selects, plus like 8 Conns (they had some kind of special on Conns then, like they were only $12 each for every $50 you spent on actual Mosaic stuff -- or something like that). It was a HUGE order, something like $400+ easily.

Time to readjust your Mosaic function machine. Andrew solo and Hutch are $5 cheaper thru the end of January. $3 knocked off the J.J. But you have to decide before February! :)

Looking to get two or three things from Mosaic between now and Christmas (maybe even by the end of THIS week).

(...) does Mosaic do pre-orders??

If I called them now (or later this week) with an order for two or three things now, and also wanted to pre-order the Zeitlin (NOW), could they do that (and charge my card (now) for the whole deal), but then have them NOT send anything to me until the Zeitlin becomes available??

(...)

I emailed them the very question, thinking to buy Akiyoshi and Zeitlin's Mosaics. They did not even replied me... Like I was asking for some foods in a supermarket. I just buyed them the Braxton box and this carelessness was disappointing

YES, the first two discs of the Weston are the best two.

Agreed! :tup

For what is worth my opinion: yes, they're masterpieces.

I had the first Roulette cd edition of Huhru Africa/Highlife and some other Weston cds and that's why I did not buy this Select (always too much cds in list, that's the point).
