just found out that the singer Lula Reed died this year, don't know if this was mentioned already - fine singer (with some funky intonation, let us say) for King Records, was married to Sonny Thompson, recorded (first, I think) "I'll Drown in my Own Tears." Ace has recently reissued her stuff from the King catalog.

If you google his name, you get a couple of items which refer to him as 'the late Don Joseph'.

I did subsequently find a couple of references to the late Don Joseph, but they were both passing mentions of musical influences on Joe Traina and may not be reliable. If trumpeter Don Joseph did pass away in 2008, it's odd that it should be so hard to find confirmation.

Out of curiosity, I checked the Social Security death index and did indeed find a reference to a Don Joseph who died on July 22, 2008 in Celine, Texas. However, take a closer look at the information pasted below:

Oh sad! I haven't managed to get around to that Ace compilation yet. Only have a photo of her and Sonny on one of his LPs. Yes, I think her version of "Drown in my tears" was the first. Must get to that Ace CD.

Bill Crow just replied to my request for information on Don Joseph. According to Bill, Don Joseph passed away in February 1994 in Staten Island (NY). So the information in Cadence is wrong (unless there was another trumpeter named Don Joseph).

Just found out that Salah Ragab also left us in July 2008.

Ragab, drummer and founder of Egyptian Jazz scene and founder of Cairo Jazz Band, gained some fame when he collaborated with Sun Ra in the 80s.

This is best Album, IMHO:
