Brandon Burke Posted October 31, 2003 Report Posted October 31, 2003 (edited) A friend of mine burned Browne's second LP, Duncan Browne, last week and I just got it in the mail. I can't stop listening to it. His (only marginally) better known record, Give Me Take You, is another classic. Provided, that is, that you dig British psychedelic 60's folk rock. If you can get into, say, the first McCartney LP, Nick Drake, the Small Faces, Billy Nicholls or Emitt Rhodes I'm assuming you'd really like this stuff..... jazzbo Posted October 31, 2003 Report Posted October 31, 2003 Hmmm. . . given that I don't at all like the recordings you've cited this resembles, I'll pass on this one! Quote
Brandon Burke Posted November 1, 2003 Author Report Posted November 1, 2003 You guys are seriously missing the boat on this one. I understand if it isn't your bag but both of these records are very, very good. I've presonally listened to the self-titled 1973 record 3 times in that last 24 hours. I'm surprised that some of our UK posters haven't spoken up already. Again, if you like Nick Drake, "Maybe I'm Amazed"-era McCartney, or Billy Nicholls (which is, I admit, a ridiculously obscure record) then you'll most certainly like this stuff...... Quote
A Lark Ascending Posted November 1, 2003 Report Posted November 1, 2003 (edited) A name I don't recall at all. I was a teenager in the early 70s with my ears attuned to just this sort of music. I'm sure he must have been played on things like the Bob Harris and Alan Black shows. But the name and covers (and I've a good memory for covers given how much time I spend in record shops on Saturday afternoons!) don't ring any bells. Nice to know music like this can still affect people down the years. I recently bought 'The River' by Terry Reid, a record I recall from that time and one that has got itself a big reputation since. It hasn't really made an impression yet but I'm giving it time. A 'lost' group from this era were 'Bronco'. They had three LPs out, I think. There's a beautiful track on the old Island 'Bumpers' compilation that opened my ears to so much and I have their excellent second album, Ace of Sunlight. Jess Rosen, the singer, became semi-famous and the other musicians went on to play in different bands later including Robert Plants. I'd like to see those reissued. AfricaBrass Posted November 1, 2003 Report Posted November 1, 2003 Hmmm. . . given that I DO like the recordings you've cited that this resembles, I'll keep my eye out for it! Thanks Brandon! I'll also look for some Bronco records, Bev. Quote
Brandon Burke Posted November 2, 2003 Author Report Posted November 2, 2003 Sorry to keep calling you out, Bev (see my Actual thread), I thought for sure you's be familiar whith this stuff. Can't speak for how popular the Immediate Records catalog was in the UK at the time but I know that the Small Faces and P.P. Arnold had a few hits. Quote
A Lark Ascending Posted November 2, 2003 Report Posted November 2, 2003 Immediate was a successful label in the late 60s due to the names you mention. I think it folded right at the end or the start of the 70s. I started listening and buying pop/rock in 1970 so it was really a 'past' label by then. I recall seeing LPs by The Nice on Immediate in other peoples' collections but they were already unavailable. Quote
