Clunky Posted December 8, 2008 Report Posted December 8, 2008 Again very hard but.... Herbie Nichols Larry Young Serge Chaloff Quote
shaft Posted December 8, 2008 Report Posted December 8, 2008 Hi! TOUGH Question! Hank Mobley Morgan Shorter Jazz Crusaders and..... I love the Woody Herman select! /Shaft Quote
ejp626 Posted December 9, 2008 Report Posted December 9, 2008 My top two would be Farmer/Golson Jazztet Mobley Really don't know as there are a lot competing for third spot. I'll have to ponder. I guess I have all the content from the Andrew Hill set, but not the box itself. That would be #1. That'll have to do for now. Quote
Jazzmoose Posted December 9, 2008 Report Posted December 9, 2008 Alas, these are formerly owned, but here are my three favorites from what I used to have: 1. Anita O'Day 2. Classic Capitol Jazz Sessions 3. Complete HRS Sessions Quote
Uncle Skid Posted December 9, 2008 Report Posted December 9, 2008 Andrew Hill Anthony Braxton Tristano/Konitz/Marsh I sold the Anita O'Day, and haven't regretted it... yet Quote
vajerzy Posted December 9, 2008 Report Posted December 9, 2008 Classic Capitol Nat King Cole HRS and Anita O'Day (tie) Quote
medjuck Posted December 9, 2008 Report Posted December 9, 2008 Am I really the first to mention the Mingus?!!I'd add the Mulligan Concert Jazz band and the Ellington small groups. Quote
B. Goren. Posted December 9, 2008 Report Posted December 9, 2008 Andrew Hill (big box). Hank Mobley. Tristano-Marsh-Konitz. Quote
Dave James Posted December 9, 2008 Report Posted December 9, 2008 I don't think anyone has mentioned the Tina Brooks. Maybe because it was only released on LP and has subsequently been issued in its entirely on individual CD's, you tend to forget what a revelation it was when Mosaic first made it available. For that reason, I'm going with that as my #1. The "blown away by" factor for this one was off the charts. Second and third would have to go to compilations, the HRS and the Capital Jazz boxes in no particular order. That's simply a function of diversity. The idea of being able to throw on a handful of discs from either set and be able to listen to so many different musicians just seems to be my cup of tea. I know I can only choose three, but I'd feel guilty if I didn't at least bring up the Jackie McLean. Up over and out. Quote
gmonahan Posted December 9, 2008 Report Posted December 9, 2008 Ouch--this one is hard! Basie Live Roulette set (though I love the studio stuff too) Teagarden Capitol set Anita O'Day (though I do love the Herman Phillips Select--sorry Lon!) Greg Mo Fascinating how many lists the O'Day set made. Quote
porcy62 Posted December 9, 2008 Report Posted December 9, 2008 (edited) Impossible task! Every time I put one Mosaic in rotation my reaction is: Wow, this is great why didn't I noted those faboulous tracks/solos/etc? The big box are still growing in me everytime I listen to them. blajay Posted December 9, 2008 Report Posted December 9, 2008 Tina Brooks Herbie Nichols Anthony Braxton Definitely a tough task though. Quote
randyhersom Posted December 9, 2008 Report Posted December 9, 2008 I'm familiar with the Herbie Nichols, Andrew Hill, Larry Young and Cecil Taylor sets as individual releases and all are must have in one format or another. I'm usually happy with the master takes, so no pining for a few bonus tracks here. I guess my favorite Mosaic that I actually own is the Don Pullen Select, McCoy Tyner Select a close second. Also, Jazztet, Parlan and Gerald Wilson that I haven't had as long ... Weston, Patton, first Hill Select, Amy ... Quote
tranemonk Posted December 9, 2008 Author Report Posted December 9, 2008 I'm finding this VERY interesting..... I'm surprised that the following has not popped up yet... 1) JJ Johnson Columbia Small Group 2) Complete Mercury Max Roach 3) Verve/Phillips Dizzy set.. Hm...  Quote

Dave James Posted December 10, 2008 Report Posted December 10, 2008 TM - Right on. The J.J. set is one I forgot about entirely. Full of first class stuff and, as I've mentioned before, probably the best showcase for under-recorded Bobby Jaspar that you're likely to find. Up over and out. Quote
papsrus Posted December 10, 2008 Report Posted December 10, 2008 1. Woody Herman Mosaic Select 2. Thad Jones/Mel Lewis 3. Charles Tolliver Mosiac Select In order of preference. I just ordered your No. 3. Quote
Sundog Posted December 10, 2008 Report Posted December 10, 2008 1) Giuffre 2) Tristano/Konitz/Marsh 3) Mobley Honorable Mention: J.J. Johnson Quote
stephenrr Posted December 10, 2008 Report Posted December 10, 2008 Tough decision, but intriguing to think about. My current favorite big box sets are: 1. Woody Shaw 2. Andrew Hill 3. Jazztet But I couldn't live without these Selects: 1. McCoy Tyner 2. Tony Williams 3. Charles Tolliver 4. Bobby Hutcherson Quote
Brute Posted December 10, 2008 Report Posted December 10, 2008 (edited) Impossible task! OK, here's three I listen to alot... Lionel Hampton Victor Sessions H.R.S. Chu Berry and some runner ups/honorable mentions... Hardy & Quebec Blue Note Verve/Clef Charlie Ventura & Flip Phillips Capitol Jazz Ellington Small Groups Verve Hodges Edited December 10, 2008 by Brute Quote
J Larsen Posted December 13, 2008 Report Posted December 13, 2008 Anthony Braxton Andrew Hill Chico Hamilton (still haven't found anyone to sell me a copy of this...) Honorable mention: Cecil Taylor I have some reservations about including the Hill and Taylor just because all of the music has since been made available in other formats, but on the musical merits alone they make the cut for me. By that standard, I guess the Mingus set has to be included as well. Quote
GA Russell Posted December 13, 2008 Report Posted December 13, 2008 When you guys refer to the Mingus box, are you referring to the Columbia or the Candid? Quote
