Hot Ptah Posted December 5, 2008 Report Posted December 5, 2008 I'm sure I've mentioned this before, but the soprano saxophone sounds to me like a duck farting through a kazoo... Your comparison is an insult to farting ducks the world over. Even when it's played by Sidney Bechet? Quote
GregK Posted December 5, 2008 Report Posted December 5, 2008 I really really hate the bass clarinet. It's funny, I generally hate the clarinet, but I really dig the bass clarinet (Dolphy and Rivers especially). I also have little to no use for the flute, violin, and/or tuba in most instances... although sometimes they do the job. Funny, two of my favorite instrument tones are the clarinet and bass clarinet. BruceH Posted December 5, 2008 Report Posted December 5, 2008 Something about James Spaulding's tone and phrasing on alto makes me feel like I'm sharing a jar with a very angry insect . His flute work I like very much though . I'm not a big fan of Spaulding either, including his flute work. Quote

Teasing the Korean Posted December 6, 2008 Report Posted December 6, 2008 As Brian Wilson said, I did NOT want to hear that shound. Quote
BruceH Posted December 6, 2008 Report Posted December 6, 2008 (edited) Let me put in a positive vote for the soprano sax (IOW, I like it.) Not when Kenny G plays it, but that hardly counts... Edited December 7, 2008 by BruceH Quote
bigtiny Posted December 9, 2008 Report Posted December 9, 2008 (edited) I was just re-reading "Jazz Anecdotes" the other day and ran across the line from Al Cohn that I'd forgotten: "A gentleman is somebody who knows how to play the accordian, but doesn't" bigtiny Edited December 9, 2008 by bigtiny Quote
Joe G Posted December 9, 2008 Report Posted December 9, 2008 Interesting thread. I disagree with about 85% of the comments. I like Jackie McLean's Prestige tone, Harry Allen, Stuff Smith, Stephane Grapelli, jazz organ, Red Mitchell, Bob Magnusson, harmonica(especially blues harmonica),Ken Peplowski, Gene Quill,Phil Woods- even his recent playing! I don't like rock sounding guitar in jazz, electric piano, electric bass, varitone electronics on saxophone or other horns, Bill Frisell's guitar sound. I disagree with about 85% of your post. Quote
