Hardbopjazz Posted December 1, 2008 Report Posted December 1, 2008 Any familiar with Ayler records? Do you know if it is a liget label? Quote
relyles Posted December 1, 2008 Report Posted December 1, 2008 Yes, as far as I know it is legit. Some nice titles on the label - which I believe focuses on live recordings. The owner, Jan Strom, has also compiled what is arguably the definitive Jimmy Lyons discography. Quote
AndrewHill Posted December 1, 2008 Report Posted December 1, 2008 Yes, its legit. I only have Ayler's Copenhagen Tapes but really wish to get more. A lot of very good stuff there. Quote
Hardbopjazz Posted December 1, 2008 Author Report Posted December 1, 2008 (edited) I saw a few items that sound intresting. Most of the catalog are just MP3 downloads. Thanks for the replies. I can buy knowing the artists will get some pennies in return. Edited December 1, 2008 by Hardbopjazz Quote
PHILLYQ Posted December 2, 2008 Report Posted December 2, 2008 They're legit and their service is excellent! I've ordered from them a few times and they deliver quickly, no muss no fuss. They're practically all downloads now and they specialize in live recordings. Quote
alocispepraluger102 Posted December 2, 2008 Report Posted December 2, 2008 i love the label. i've bought perhaps a dozen offerings by download. all my stuff has been of the avant style. i'm not sure what what other styles they offer. there's a ton of great live recordings from the glenn miller cafe. Joe Posted December 2, 2008 Report Posted December 2, 2008 Yes, a label very worthy of your support. By all means, snag the Jimmy Lyons box set while its still available. Quote
RDK Posted December 2, 2008 Report Posted December 2, 2008 i love the label. i've bought perhaps a dozen offerings by download. all my stuff has been of the avant style. i'm not sure what what other styles they offer. there's a ton of great live recordings from the glenn miller cafe. I can't be the only one to love the irony of such avant jazz being played in a club named after Glenn Miller. FYI, at least some of their albums are available on emusic. Worth sampling them there. paul secor Posted December 2, 2008 Report Posted December 2, 2008 I have a few titles - probably should have more. A fine label - & worthy of your support. Quote
Rob C Posted December 2, 2008 Report Posted December 2, 2008 Be sure to check out their Exploding Customer releases!!! I particularly love the first one, which I believe is just called Live at Glenn Miller Cafe. Quote
relyles Posted December 2, 2008 Report Posted December 2, 2008 Yes, a label very worthy of your support. By all means, snag the Jimmy Lyons box set while its still available. Agreed. I purchased that set when it first came out and listened to all five discs in one sitting right away. That box set enhanced my appreciation of Lyones exponentially. Before that, the only Lyons I heard was with Cecil Taylor. Since, I have purchased several of his other dates as a leader and can really hear just how significant he was. I also recommend the Henry Grimes trio recording with David Murray and Hamid Drake. Excellent listening experience. Quote

king ubu Posted December 3, 2008 Report Posted December 3, 2008 Fine label indeed! I don't have that much (yet) and none of the downloadable ones.: aylCD-004 Brötzmann/Uuskyla/Friis Nielsen Live at Nefertiti Peter Brötzmann, ts, tarogato, cl Peter Friis Nielsen, el b Peeter Uuskyla, dr found that one just so-so... aylCD-017/018 Anders Gahnold Trio Flowers for Johnny Anders Gahnold, as Johnny Dyani, b Gilbert Matthews, dr probably my favourite next to the Lyons box - astonishingly strong and beautiful music, great playing by Dyani, good groovy drumming by Matthews... and Gahnold is quite a revelation! (Though this is all I've heard of him) aylCD-032 Per Henrik Wallin Trio The Stockholm Tapes Per Henrik Wallin, p Lars-Göran Ulander, as Peter Olsen, dr noisy 70s european free (think Schlippenbach, Brötzmann, Bennink etc etc) - not bad aylCD-033 Albert Ayler Quartet The Copenhagen Tapes Albert Ayler ts Don Cherry, tp Gary Peacock, b Sunny Murray, dr great one, of course! was on sale for a looooong time recently, took them much too long to sell their final stock, too bad if you missed it! (the longer of the two sessions is in the Revenant box, strangely) aylCD-036-040 Jimmy Lyons The Box Set Jimmy Lyons, as Karen Borca, bassoon (039, 040) Hayes Burnett, b (036, 037, 038) Henry Letcher, dr (037) Raphé Malik, tp (036) Paul Murphy, dr (039, 040) William Parker, b (040) Sidney Smart, dr (036) essential stuff! aylCD-048/49 Mongezi Feza Free Jam Mongezi Feza, tp Bernt Rosengren, as, ts, fl, p Tommy Koverhult, ts, fl, euphonium Torbjörn Hultcranz, b Leif Wennerström, dr Okay Temiz, percussion rough and edgy music by Feza and the Rosengren quartet, with Okay Temiz added... not "great" music, but I think this is a very enjoyable release. rough sound, too... aylCD-050/51 The Dynamic Duo Remember Trane and Bird Rashied Ali, dr, vo Arthur Rhames, ts, p Rhames is a legendary character, this is one of the few recordings available - not one I play often though, maybe just a bit too much of a good thing... aylCD-053 Bayashi Help Is On Its Way Vidar Johansen, ts, bcl, fl Bjørnar Andresen, b Thomas Strønen, dr got this one as a freebie in a sale, not sure about it, have only played it once I think... king ubu Posted December 3, 2008 Report Posted December 3, 2008 Any opinions on the Michael Marcus and John Stevens Trios (006 & 007)? These both look interesting! Quote
Nate Dorward Posted December 3, 2008 Report Posted December 3, 2008 The Marcus is fine--not brilliant, but it's solid (& I speak as someone who by & large doesn't like Marcus). Quote
Alexander Hawkins Posted December 3, 2008 Report Posted December 3, 2008 Afraid I don't know the Stevens, but with Ozzie and Paul Rogers, I'd say odds on to be excellent! Quote
king ubu Posted December 3, 2008 Report Posted December 3, 2008 Afraid I don't know the Stevens, but with Ozzie and Paul Rogers, I'd say odds on to be excellent! Yes, that's what I've been thinking, too! Quote
