A Lark Ascending Posted November 29, 2008 Report Posted November 29, 2008 I'm not wanting to start up the Euro/US copyright wars again, but in the new Jazzwise I notice Discovery records have slated for Jan 2009: Ellington - Black Brown and Beige Ella - Ellington Songbook Miles - Porgy and Bess Miles - Milestones Cannonball - Somethin' Else Sun Ra - Jazz in Silhouette. and a number of other famous recordings from '57-'58. GregK Posted November 29, 2008 Report Posted November 29, 2008 How do they do this if Columbia stills holds the master tapes? Quote
J.A.W. Posted November 29, 2008 Report Posted November 29, 2008 (edited) Cannonball Adderley's Somethin' Else is a Blue Note recording, so the master is owned by EMI, not Columbia (now Sony). They don't own the master of Sun Ra's Jazz in Silhouette either as far as I know. Edited November 29, 2008 by J.A.W. Quote
Daniel A Posted November 29, 2008 Report Posted November 29, 2008 How do they do this if Columbia stills holds the master tapes? Probably by copying existing CD releases. I thought the old Discovery label was still controlled by Warner. Or is this some independent rip-off label? Quote

sidewinder Posted November 29, 2008 Report Posted November 29, 2008 (edited) Probably by copying existing CD releases. No doubt. I notice that one of these labels (Jazz Connection - Son of Gambit?) has a 3 CD set of Max Roach Mercury material which was no doubt lifted from the Mosaic set. What's the bet we will also see a 'Jazz Track' issue of Kind Of Blue next year. Just to round off the 'Legit' Anniversary Box.. Edited November 29, 2008 by sidewinder Quote

I was actually responding to GregK's post, who seemed to be under the impression that they were all Columbia titles. Edited November 29, 2008 by J.A.W. Quote

Just to round off the 'Legit' Anniversary Box.. ... facsimile, wrong pitch on one side and the titles of Flamenco Sketches and All Blues mixed up. Otherwise I don't see the point. Discovery UK is the distributor for "the Andorrans" here. F Quote
Daniel A Posted November 29, 2008 Report Posted November 29, 2008 Discovery UK is the distributor for "the Andorrans" here. I see! The labels (not that it matters much) for the new "reissues" are Disconforme, Essential Jazz Classics, Jazz Track and Gambit, and all seem to be listed as available already. Why all these different labels? Quote
Swinging Swede Posted November 29, 2008 Report Posted November 29, 2008 Perhaps to confuse matters from a legal viewpoint. Let's see, we have: Fresh Sound Blue Moon Cool & Blue Definitive Lone Hill Jazz Gambit Jazz Factory Swing Factory Soundtrack Factory Free Factory Essential Jazz Classics Fine And Mellow Swing Hat Groove Hut Jazz Beat Jazz Track Jazz Collectors Jazz Connections Jazz Lips Jazz Row RLR and then I think they have several DVD labels also. I haven't followed those as closely, but are these all "Andorran" labels? 20th Century Jazz Masters Impro-Jazz Jazz Casual Jazz Memories Jazz Movie Classics Jazz Music Performances Jazz Options Jazz Shots Jazz Vip Rhapsody Films Salt Peanuts Standing Oh!vation Stars Of Jazz Swing Era This Is DVD Jazz True Giants Of Jazz Quote
