undergroundagent Posted October 30, 2003 Report Posted October 30, 2003 While it is often expensive, I just got an order filled for John Patton "Boogaloo" for $10.99. In many cases, you can find your rarities there. Quote
jazzbo Posted October 30, 2003 Report Posted October 30, 2003 This has been mentioned from time to time on other boards by members here; I guess we've been remiss to not mention it again here. "Often expensive" is indeed why I don't go there often! Quote
Rooster_Ties Posted October 30, 2003 Report Posted October 30, 2003 (edited) Well, for starters --- 90+% of the items I find on Gemm.com are really "Availability: SPECIAL ORDER (Not in stock)" items, where you know the 'seller' can't possibly fulfil the order. (Well, maybe once in a blue moon they can.) But my point is that I'm not about to start throwing my money (and/or credit card numbers) at on-line retailers who are attempting to sell things they can't actually get a hold of. That, and the prices are insane - or at least 98% of them are. So, I stopped looking on Gemm - well over a year ago. (That said, "Boogaloo" is a fantastic disc, and $11 is a decent price - good find!! ===== Edit: I guess I should say that 90+% of the really interesting items (like OOP titles, or imports) are "Special Order - Not In Stock" items. If one is looking for more mainstream stuff, than perhaps the "in stock" rate is a bit better. At least with eBay and Half.com, you're dealing with sellers that actually have the product (in hand) to sell you. Imgine what a pain in the ass eBay and half.com would be if you could list anything and everything that your distributor still has in their computer. Yikes!!!! Talk about a recipe for chaos!!!!! Simon Weil Posted October 30, 2003 Report Posted October 30, 2003 (edited) I've bought three things off Gemm. Bill Dixon's Intents and Purposes (LP) which was $50. Coltrane's Cosmic Music which was ca $20 from Japan - and the Coda with Val Wilmer's Ayler interview. All of those I absolutely had to have - and bought from 5 star merchants, having bitten the bullet on whatever the price was. I don't like buying music from unknown vendors, but if I have to... Shrdlu Posted October 30, 2003 Report Posted October 30, 2003 I often mention it. This website has been an invaluable aid to me in getting a lot of LPs of sessions which haven't been reissued on CD. Seldom do I not find an album that I want. The only limit for me is that I cannot afford to buy too many in a given time period. Re "expensive", I avoid high-priced items, however "mint" they may be said to be. I usually pay from $10 to $20 for an LP in VG+ condition. I also avoid the Gemm fee by dealing directly with the seller in each case. Re "availablity", the sellers have always had the things that I have wanted. I email them to find out, of course, but I have not been disappointed. So: Vive le Gemm! You can find it there, and rememberaboutit. Quote
Jim Alfredson Posted October 31, 2003 Report Posted October 31, 2003 I bought Larry Goldings' first record off Gemm for the low price of $12. Not bad. That's about the only order I've actually had fullfilled. Quote

I think its handy for titles you just cant find anywhere & you are willing to pay what it takes to get it. I used it to get Tina Brooks - True Blue . I paid about £25 ($42) to an Australian company for a Japanese copy - I didnt mind i wanted it badly. Mind you i was a tad disapointed when it turned up a Spanish site for 6 euros ($7) about a month later! Quote
