Little High People Posted October 30, 2003 Report Posted October 30, 2003 i'm geeking out and putting together cd-r's of albums from my box sets (miles, trane, ornette) ... many of these i've never heard in their original running order. i can get the miles info online at losin's site, but does anyone know the original LP sequences (with side breaks) to the following coltrane LP's? Africa/Brass Live at the Village Vanguard Impressions Selflessness Transition Sun Ship Infinity The Africa Brass Sessions, Vol. 2 Feelin' Good To the Beat of a Different Drummer Jupiter Variation Trane's Modes thanks Quote
Shrdlu Posted October 30, 2003 Report Posted October 30, 2003 Having been around when the LPs were first issued, I can help you with some right away. "Africa/Brass": Side 1 "Africa" Side 2 "Greensleeves", "Blues Minor" "Live at the Village Vanguard": Side 1 "Spiritual", "Softly As In A Morning Sunrise" Side 2 "Chasin' The Trane" "Impressions": Side 1 "Impressions", "Up 'Gainst The Wall" Side 2 "India", "After The Rain" "Transition": Side 1 "Transition", "Dear Lord" Side 2 "Suite" "Sun Ship": Side 1 "Sun Ship", "Dearly Beloved", "Amen" Side 2: "Attaining", "Ascent" The others I'm not sure about. "Infinity", I think, was the one with the overdubs by Alice and Co. Sorry: the board software will mess up my formatting a little. Quote
Little High People Posted October 31, 2003 Author Report Posted October 31, 2003 (edited) thanks! does anyone know what was on "selflessness?" i heard it was a live recording of "favorite things." has that track (or whatever else was on there) been reissued? JSngry Posted October 31, 2003 Report Posted October 31, 2003 If nobody else has these albums, I can get you the information if you can wait a day or two. Time is tight right now, and I type slow. But I have them all. Quote
Shrdlu Posted November 2, 2003 Report Posted November 2, 2003 I checked the Verve site, but they have nothing to add to this. I notice that the CD of "Transition" has Transition, Welcome, Suite, Vigil but, going by memory, I'm sticking to what I posted above for the LP contents. The booklet with the 8 CD set agrees with me, too. I definitely remember the calm of "Dear Lord" following the turbulent track "Transition". I do not have the "Transition" CD, so I can't check, but I think there is just an error on the Verve site. "Welcome" and "Vigil" were on the "Kulu Se Mama" LP. Quote
Claude Posted November 2, 2003 Report Posted November 2, 2003 (edited) - Selflessness Side A: My favourite things; I want to talk about you Side B: Selflessness - Feelin' Good (The Mastery Of John Coltrane Vol.1) Side A: Feelin' Good; My Favourite Things Side B: Living Space; Untitled 90 320 Side C: Untitled 90 314; Dusk-Dawn Side D: Nature Boy; Joy - To the Beat of a Different Drummer (The Mastery Of John Coltrane Vol.2) Side A: Impressions; I want to talk about you Side B: My Favourite Things; After The Rain Side C: Dear Old Stockholm; After The Crescent Side D: One Up, One Down; Dear Lord - Jupiter Variation (The Mastery Of John Coltrane Vol.3) Side A: Number one; Peace On Earth Side B: Jupiter; Leo - Trane's Modes (The Mastery Of John Coltrane Vol.4) Side A: Impressions (Take one); Miles' Modes Side B: Chasin' another Trane; Greensleeves (take two) Side C: Impressions (Take Two); Naima Side D: Africa (First version); The Damned Don't Cry (taken from a german book on Coltrane) All these albums are compiled from different sessions, so the original order doesn't necessarily make much sense. Little High People Posted November 2, 2003 Author Report Posted November 2, 2003 (edited) i know the album orders (especially the 70's posthumous releases) are a hodge podge, but i was wanting to hear them that way to maybe gain a different perspective on the work. i sat down the other nite and listened straight thru, on headphones to disc 2 of the "legacy" box set that impulse! put out last year. it was nice to hear tunes from different sessions (and different periods, even) in one sitting. i wouldn't trade my classic quartet, heavyweight champion, or village vanguard boxes for the world, but sometimes a full disc of one session or one era gets a little tedious. what versions of favorite things and i want to talk about you are on selflessness? thanks again, guys, for all the info! Claude Posted November 2, 2003 Report Posted November 2, 2003 On Selflessness: The two tracks on Side A are from the Newport Festival 1963, and have been reissued on the Newport '63 CD. The title track has been reissued on the Major works 2CD set Quote
