Atlantic Soul 1959-1975

Recommended Posts

Anyone have this box set from Rhino Handmade?

http://www.amazon.com/Atlantic-Soul-1959-1...3963&sr=1-2

Curious to hear any comments.

I don't though I think the Amazon review was apt. It looks interesting but far less essential than Atlantic Rhythm & Blues 1947-1974 (which has twice the music for roughly half the cost for a used copy). If you already have this set, then you might consider the Rhino.

Thanks. This set seems to be less "hit" focused, unlike the earlier massive set.

Obviously room in the universe for both, but if I could only have one, I would want the hits. I do have the Atlantic R & B set, and it is terrific.

I have it, and it's fantastic. Its price reflects the fact that it's a limited edition set, but I predict a lot of people will be sorry they passed on it once it's OOP and even spendier than it is now. That said, I'll agree that it's probably not the set you want to start with if you don't already have the Atlantic R&B set (which pretty much defines "essential").

Rhino Handmade also has released two other related sets, Atlantic Blues and Atlantic Vocal Groups, that are similarly focused more on rarities and obscure tracks than on the better-known hits.

I guess they had to go for the less popular in order to avoid duplicating too many tracks that are on the Atlantic R&B set. There are some really great things on this - like Solomon Burke's "Stupidity", which I greatly regret selling on 45. But this is definitely "nice to have" compared with the R&B box.

I have lots and lots of Atlantic R&B and soul in my collection.

I am also at a point in my life in which I don't want to spend money for overplayed hits.

Compilations that are arranged conceptually or artistically mean much more to me than greatest hits collections.

From what I'm hearing, this new compilation is worth getting.
